Oakland A's owners to bring pro soccer back to Bay area

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Major League Soccer is heading back to the Bay Area.

The league announced Wednesday that it has agreed to a deal with the owners of the Oakland A's that will bring a team back to the area, following last year's departure of the San Jose Earthquakes.

Lew Wolff and John Fisher, the A's principal owners, will have three years to buy a team and develop a stadium solely for soccer. The location of the new stadium has not been determined but the new offices will be located in downtown San Jose.

"We fully understand our success in this endeavor is contingent on our ability to secure a new stadium for the team," Wolff said.

Owners of the two-time MLS Cup champion Earthquakes moved the team to Houston in December after public financing for a new facility in San Jose fell through.

The A's are looking to build a new baseball stadium outside Oakland because it appears unlikely their hometown will approve financing for a new stadium.

Notice it said "BUY" a team. Does that mean they won't be getting one of the 3 expansion franchises that MLS wants to add by the end of the decade? If that's the case, my money's on KC being the one to relocate. And I assume they would be named the Earthquakes, of course.

Were the 'Quakes losing money? I don't understand why they left. They seemed like they always drew good crowds and had a good fanbase.

basically, AEG runs a concert p[romoting buisness as well as soccer teams. San jose didnt give them a venue to promote concerts in, so they left town.

I doubt they own the venue, AEG wants soccer-specific venues that have stages in the endzne area for large concerts (like Kenny Chesney's summer tour of stadiums)

Basically, AB's saying they want Pizza Hut Park. I've never been to PHP, but I've seen in pictures exactly what AB's talking about.
