Ron Mexico Posted May 24, 2006 Share Posted May 24, 2006 Oakland A's owners to bring pro soccer back to Bay areaSAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Major League Soccer is heading back to the Bay Area. The league announced Wednesday that it has agreed to a deal with the owners of the Oakland A's that will bring a team back to the area, following last year's departure of the San Jose Earthquakes. Lew Wolff and John Fisher, the A's principal owners, will have three years to buy a team and develop a stadium solely for soccer. The location of the new stadium has not been determined but the new offices will be located in downtown San Jose. "We fully understand our success in this endeavor is contingent on our ability to secure a new stadium for the team," Wolff said. Owners of the two-time MLS Cup champion Earthquakes moved the team to Houston in December after public financing for a new facility in San Jose fell through. The A's are looking to build a new baseball stadium outside Oakland because it appears unlikely their hometown will approve financing for a new stadium.Updated on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 1:48 pm EDT Notice it said "BUY" a team. I hate it. Bring back the San Jose Earthquakes!!!!!!! Were the 'Quakes losing money? I don't understand why they left. They seemed like they always drew good crowds and had a good fanbase.
