dpnation
I've been curious about the Miami Heat's arena and what they're using to get the white out effect in the stands. On tv it looks like everyone is wearing all white in the crowd, which looks pretty cool:But, when the stadium is empty, it looks like the seats are white, not necessarily the fans' clothing:I just thought this was interesting because for a while I couldn't believe that NBA goers would all rally together and wear a certain color (something that I can see college students doing, not your average NBA fans)So is it the seat color that's really causing it to look so uniform? I'm still undecided.
doafhat
They're probably draping white shirts on top of the seats for the fans to wear, making the seats look white before the games.
rmackman
It's both. The lower deck has white sheets draped over the chairbacks. Every fan is also given a white Miami Heat T-shirt before the game. If you don't put it on, the stadium camera will find you and the PA Announcer will make fun of you until you put it on. This goes on about a half hour before the game until tipoff. I have one of the white t-shirts if you want me to take a picture of it and show you. "Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be eaten. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running." - Unknown | Check out my articles on jerseys at Bacon Sports

Fred T. Jane
Didn't the Jets used to do this while they were in Winnipeg? I remember "The Charge of the White Brigade". i also remember the phoneix coyotes doing something similar The Jets originated the White-Out for their (short) playoff runs in Winnipeg, and the franchise carried it on when they moved to Phoenix. The Louisiana IceGators tried it one playoff year when the locals supported them, and an opposing coach who played for Winnipeg commented how it reminded him of his days in Manitoba. Too bad they never won the Kelly Cup... [Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008 Attention: In order to obtain maximum enjoyment from your stay at the CCSLC, the reader is advised that the above post may contain large amounts of sarcasm, dry humour, or statements which should not be taken in any true sort of seriousness. SouthSidePride
Next year when I get to Mizzou, two words: diamond endzone. That's right, I'm petitioning to make the Zou's (the Mizzou arena) crowd to appear in the diamond enzone effect. doafhat
I'm partial to this one: Tennessee vs. KentuckyThat looks great, a lot better than the checkerboard that Texas A&M tried to pull off for their basketball game back in 2005 against Oklahoma State. Instead of doing large sections of maroon or white, I think they alternated colors from person to person. It wound up looking more like static than a checkerboard. -Helix-
I believe the Sabres have been (trying to) do the white out this year too. But I suspect they're doing it like the Jets used to and tried to get the fans to bring their own white shirts instead of giving them out because it doesn't look that good on TV.The Lightning did it for one game in the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals and called it the "White Wave" for the theme of "The White Wave splitting the Red Sea". (Red Sea being the tradition of the Calgary Flames where everyone wears red.)They were going to do another color besides white because white is so overused, but they were afraid that Habby wouldn't have been able to see the puck if the crowd was dressed in a dark color. (Although a "Blackout" would've been awesome. Goes with the lightning theme too.)I'm glad Tampa didn't stick with the White Wave though. It was a cool "one game" thing, but I'm not a fan of stealing traditions. *COUGH*ORANGECRUSH*COUGH* The Coyotes are really the only franchise that makes sense having the whiteout. And seeing an NBA team do it just hurts the stomach. U of Hawaii Warriors 3
the University of Hawaii takes it a step further by having only certain games be a white green or even black out, although it hardly ever works 100%. its started with the mens basketball team and has recently started to spread to the other sports. they started this tradition i think back in 01 or 02 during their 2nd stright WAC tourny championship season/2nd stright NCAA tourny apperance. My favorite saying... "Nobody is perfect, I am nobody, so therefore i am perfect!!!"
HowBoutThemFins
They're seat covers. Since the theme this year is "White Hot" they figured it was probably a good idea to cover the seats up with something to make it look as if the celebrities and bandwagon fans in the lower bowl are in their seats at the beginning and end of each game.
