TFoA
As for Portugal, it would be nice for the Oranje to give Portugal a bit of payback for Euro 2004....just have to remind Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, and company they're not on their home turf THIS time around Hell yeah, we're in Germany now...a hop, skip, and a jump away from Amsterdam, baby. VENGEANCE WILL BE OURS!!!With that being said, Group E was the group of death. USA is eliminated by Ghana...That is a hot mess. But wow, give it up for Ghana, first time in the World Cup and they advance in their group with Italy and over the Czech Republic. Wow.
-kj
Wow, terrible goaltending by the US on that penalty kick. You've not watched much soccer, eh?The vast majority of PKs are converted. It's from twelve yards out, so the best the keeper can do is try to read the movements of the player and guess where they're going. If they wait for the ball to be in motion and read that, it's too late. I'd say 75% of the time, or even more, the keeper guesses the wrong way.I don't really feel like doing research into the number of converted penalties at the World Cup level right now, or I'd have better percentages as to the number converted. The penalty call itself was excessively weak, though the ball should have been cleared into touch instead of being played back into the middle, putting Onyewu in that situation.I'm absolutely gutted right now. I thought the US came out and played well, and had two bad breaks absolutely kill them. That being said, there has to be better finishing, and more willingness to attack and take shots--why is Donovan not shooting in the box when he's that open and it's that late? The Dempsey goal was brilliant. Great ball in by Beasley, and clinical finishing by Deuce. I don't expect him to play a lot longer in MLS. (Hey, Norwich, please sign him. Please? Ah, a man can dream.)Oh, and a special fiery place is reserved in my heart for people like the Arsenal fan who started talking smack about MLS and the US team such after the game was over--while holding a US scarf! Dude, don't freaking call yourself a US supporter if you're going to do crap like that. I told him off loudly in the middle of the bar. Bandwagoning glory-hunting Euro-snob poseur crap. DEAD!
Going, going, Ghana! The US must have had a case of Ghana-rea! Good luck Ghana, because you're going to need it against Brazil. (Unless they lose by a huge margin and Australia wins by a huge margin) I saw, I came, I left.

Alphabet Man
AUSTRALIA are throught to the round of 16.....we drew 2 all with Croatia, we are pretty releived cos we had the worst goalkeeping performance by Kalac...the match was good, ok i take back that draws are boring (0-0 draws are, though)one Croatian player got a full house - 3 yellows, 2 reds!!anyway, Bring on Italyoh and, anyone know US coach Bruce Arena's address, i want to write a letter regardign his comments that Australia are weakest team in the comp twitter.com/thebrainofMatt
WelshSteeler
That was one helluva rollercoaster game (watched it all rather than Brazil).Graham Poll - par for the course I'm afraid,he really is that bad a ref.Kalac-Why not Schwarzer?Practically threw the Croatian second in.Was garbage when he played for Leicester City and hasn't improved.Harry Kewell-Best game for any of his teams in a very long time (OK offside for the equalizer but after the two stonewall penalties not given they deserved the break.).Mark Viduka- What did he have to suffer to earn a free kick? His marker has a bright future in WWE.Well done Aussie - let's see how Italy handle a tough , physical game.Should be a card fest. TFoA
Wow! Did anyone see that goal in extra time of the Argentina-Mexico match? That's a winning goal for you! Yeah. That poor Mexican goalie. He couldn't have stopped that if he had wings. Well, maybe he would've, but his chances still would've been slim, that was an amazing goal. TFoA
And in the Oranje-Portugal game, the referee has basically lost control of the game, Figo took a dive, Balahrouz (sp?) gets sent off, and a melee nearly ensues. This ref is pulling out cards left and right, kinda like the one in the US-Italy game. Anybody else think that this has been a horribly officiated World Cup???
