They did have a great performance even without all those "dives" They allowed just one goal scored by an opponent, and that was in the final. I don't know what Zidane was thinking. People higher up in the organization were picking refs to help them throw the game. That was in Serie A, not the World Cup. None of these games were fixed, Italy won them fair and square. They had to win in a shootout, but they deserve the win.Oh, and how much you wanna bet the French tabloids are going to have a field day with Zidane's headbutt? God... That was stupid! These World Cup games weren't fixed, the refs weren't fixed, and the players weren't throwing games. What happened to Juventus and Serie A (apparently, it's the coaches and refs in question, not the players) had no bearing in the World Cup.All soccer players dive. History will be written about the Italian campaign to the final match with a remark on the fictious penalty against Australia.This World Cup isn't so brilliant like the past ones. If France would win this one, I was going to think the same. Really the playing of the World Cup sucked. Who editted those highlights if it made Italy look dominant because whoever it was saw a different game-Italy had a goal (correctly) disallowed in the second half and very little else after.Do you know what Materazzi said? Zidane speaks Italian so I'm guessing it was no joke. Catenaccio is a system of ultra defensive football based on not so much winning a game as not losing it. The beautiful game. Flowing offensive attacks. France kept it up in the second half and truly deserved to win. Say what you will about either country stereotypically, either about the country itself or their soccer, but watching the two teams, France completely outplayed Italy in the second half - how was Totti so invisible out there for Italy? How horrible to see Vieira (whom I still like even if he defected over to Juve, at least we DESTROYED them in the Champion's League) injured, but how brilliant to see Diarra step up and play well in his place. How bittersweet to see Thierry pick up his second second-place medal for one of the two biggest tournaments in the world within a two month span...and Zidane? Having only followed soccer for about four and a half years, it was great to finally go "Okay, this is the Zidane everyone speaks about," especially after the last few placid years in Madrid. However, the headbutt...tarnishing, though I think time may be a bit kinder to it than we think. How would you want to go out - tamely, making your penalty but having somebody else miss theirs, or in a blaze of (misplaced anger and) glory?goodbye, Zizou. if this is your club and country retirement and that was your last game, you will be sorely missed.
