Ex-Duke star Redick arrested for DWI

J.J. Redick, a likely first-round pick in this month's NBA draft, was arrested for driving while impaired early Tuesday and was released on $1,000 bond.

According to a police report, Redick was arrested at 1:03 a.m. in Durham, N.C., after the former Duke star made an illegal U-turn to avoid a police checkpoint.

"I regret what happened last night, and want to apologize to my family and the Duke community for the incident," Redick said in a statement.

Redick is scheduled to appear in a Durham court on July 17.

So on the same day Ben Roethelisburger smashes up his face by riding without a helmet, JJ Reddick decides it's a good idea to drive drunk.

Well, at least we know he'll make a fine transition into the NBA!

Don't y'all see that this was an attempt by Redick (Are Eee Dee Eye See Kay) to actually improve his draft stock, by establishing "street cred?" Everyone knows that getting arrested increases street cred! Whoever Redick's agent is, that dude is a genius for having JJ get arrested!

However, if he REALLY wanted to increase his street cred, he should have punched a cop in the face.

Or tell the cop who was administering the Breathalyzer test that he can't be arrested because he's a basketball player. AKA the Gilbert Arenas Clause. :P

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Why couldn't he be drunk during basketball season? That would make for some fun to watch games.

He played like he was drunk in the tournament.

this sure isn't going to help his falling draft stock.

No, but it's not going to hurt it, either. First of all, nobody's going to care about the charge - crimes will either show poor character, which will hold a player back and drop his stock, or a lack of judgment, which this one was, plain and simple. Teams aren't going to think, "Well, I want to draft a one-dimensional shooter really high in the first round, but because he got behind the wheel while intoxicted, we're going to pass" (and if they did, they'd be making the right decision for the wrong reasons).

This is a big deal, but it's not a big deal. Because it's Redick, the face of Duke for the past four years, people are going to talk about it. But the guy's not going to have an NBA career for long and any team taking him anywhere above the middle of the first round is delusional. In five years, his name will be synonymous with that of Mateen Cleaves.

...But then again, Cleaves won a national championship.

Deadspin has his arrest photo. I think the police did him a favor by not having the height (in inches) next to him. Then we would not how tall he really is and wonder if he could really guard anyone. Then again, he would be leaning in the photo.
