LOGO CREEP!...

In yet the latest move by some big corporate clown to use humans as billboards...

The Tigers of Auburn University have rolled out new uniforms. There's nothing really new about the design of the uniforms. What IS new is who's manufacturing them. If you ain't know, take a look below, and you'll find out REAL FAST:

Anyone besides me thinking corporate branding is getting way, way, WWWAAAAAYYYY out of hand? (You know, it's stuff like this--big copo's making money off college athletes in this manner--that kinda lend some credence to the whole debate of paying college athletes, not to mention all the NCAA sanctions about players accepting endorsement money and the like. But that's ANOTHER topic...)

In other news (this would be that "additional treat"--maybe?)...

One good glance at the upcoming NFL schedule got my spirit all revved up. But what really got me ticking was a look at the Thanksgiving Day lineup (read: NFL throwback day). As I look I see--who else--my beloved Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for the first time in their history, playing a Turkey Day game (against the Dallas Cowbys, by the way). Is it just the nostalgist in me (and the legion of loyal Buc fans who've BEEN Buc fans since the old day) or is there a possible chance we might, JUST MIGHT, see the resurfacing of my beloved creamsicle orange uniforms on that day?

Hey--a man can hope, can he?

(All my efforts to obtain info on that have failed. Anyone else know anything about that possibility?)

You do realize that this is college football, right? When was the last time you remember a college team actually wearing socks (besides a photo shoot like that photo)? Under Armor seems to be rolling out all their uni's right now, and they've gotten pretty excited about things. We'll see how much carries over to the field...

This reminds me of the world cup, I saw one teams jersey, with the Puma logo on both shoulders and below the collar middle front. That was for a real game, this is just for a photoshoot though, so I dont think it will be too bad.

The World Basketball Championship, the Davis Cup, Ryder Cup, Iraq: Every day there's further proof that we, as a nation, are not very good at international competition.

First I have to know...

Where'd you get the pic?

One of my boys from high school went to Auburn on a football scholarship. (he didn't last long on the team, but he's still at the school.) He e-mailed me that picture this morning. And amazingly enough, it must have been a popular--or notorious--release, because the same pic popped up on Paul Lukas's UniWatchBlog.com today. (Imagine how surprised I was to see that.)

In response to no97, there's quite a few college FB teams that wear socks with their unis these days, so it wouldn't suprise me one ioda if Auburn took these socks with them onto the field this fall.

Just UA "boosting their image"...

(Although I guess if they had to pick a flagship team to do it with, Auburn would be a good, strong choice. I

m just glad they didn't wrangle the design of arguably some of the cleanest, sharpest unis in college FB. Now, if the pants striping matched up with the helmet/sleeve striping, it'd be absolutely PERFECT.)

Still holding out hope for my beloved Bucs rolling out the popsicle orange unis this Thanksgiving Day... (claspng hands in prayer)

Actually, AU's unis did change slightly-

The SEC flag patch and the apparel company's logo flipped shoulders-

The Russell logo used to be on the left shoulder, and the flag on the right

Now the UA logo is on the right, and the flag on the left-

For that photo shoot and any commercials, actual AU players can't appear in it- So in that picture, #23 is not actually Kenny Irons, etc....

If I'm Auburn, I want free stuff (uniforms, shoes, other gear, and money) to offset the cost of financing a season. If I'm UnderArmour, I'm only giving them free stuff if it's actually going to increase exposure for my brand. Ideally, UA would just give stuff to the university out of the kindness of their hearts, and all would be right with the world, but that's never going to happen. It's just the way it is.

And the end of the day, it's on the university. If they feel the 'logo creep' is a big enough problem in terms of ruining the purity of their athletic uniforms, they can stop cashing the checks, return the unopened gear to UA, and start footing the bill themselves. Otherwise, it's just marketing, which is a big part of any successful business, like it or not.

The socks look pretty cool, but they won't feel cool at all in the East Alabama humidity. I just don't see them being worn too much. No cold weather games this year, as their farthest road game is in Mississippi.

Yeah over on the uniwatch blog there is a lot of talk of how much the Under Armour logo appears on the new uniforms. (one guy counted like 15 times).

I think that all the "extras" (forearm sleeves, long socks, wristbands, gloves) will all be up to the player so at minimum (not inlcuding the cleats) the UnderArmour logo will only appear twice.

Didn't they kinda do away with Thanksgiving being a throwback day? Anyway, the Glazers won't let it happen. If, hypothetically, it does, since they kinda don't care if two dark color teams play together on those days, would the Bucs wear orange tops/white pants since that is the nostalgic look? Would they wear white/white? Would they wear the 90's white top/orange pants? My bet would be Dallas in their current throwbacks vs. Tampa in orange shirt/white pants combo. In reality, I bet we will see Dallas in current throwbacks and Tampa in White jersey/pewter pants...which they've worn soooo many times. The answer man on their website has their record in the new unis. It's amazing how many times they wear white on pewter due to the heat at home and the away games...sorry for the ramble on...

I'm with ya man....

But from what I've heard, it's the Glazers fault that we've never participated in the throwback uniforms. Apparently, they dont want ANYthing to do with the orange/Culverhouse era. The thing is, didnt the Glazers own the Bucs for the last year of the orange?

Anyway, that's what I've heard...

It's not uncommon.

It's why you'll never see the Eagles go back to kelly green as long as Jeff Lurie owns the team. Midnight green and the uniform redesign are his "personal stamp" on the team, even though he could make a mint on throwbacks. Similarly, it's why Alex Spanos refuses to cave in to popular sentiment and use the powder blue Charger throwbacks any more than he has to in order to make some dough and keep people talking about the issue. While the Glazers might have owned the team for one year with the original uniforms, they changed them as soon as was legal and possible under NFL marketing rules, and they didn't tolerate it a minute longer.

Pray all you want, but the NFL scrapped the Classics throwback program at last year's Thanksgiving games, and they're probably not compelling anyone to do it as a league mandate.

Heck... I miss the Creamsicles too. I'll offer a prayer or two on behalf of the Creamsicles.

"Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... In old New York..."

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

I don't know if its a flagship school but as per their agreement to get them away from Russell their was supposed to be added marketing exposure.

Maybe im misunderstanding what your trying to say, but i think UAs flagship school is Maryland. Could be wrong though.

Can we throw back the Lions' uniforms from last Thanksgiving?

Throw them back? How 'bout throw them OUT? And if they don't do anything THIS YEAR, throw out Millen as well.

My .02.

(And btw I might have ben wrong about AU being UA's flagship school. It might be mayrland, now that I think about it. Maybe I should dig up that article I pulled that info from and double-check myself.)

I think the flagship school is maryland because the UA founder played football there. And they were the first school to wear UA jerseys.

I'm surprised the logo creep hasn't extended to the helmets -- I think U of Maryland's practice helmets have a biiig Under Armour logo on them.
