More logo changes in Buffalo

Apparently, according to WGR, they're holding a press conference today to unveil them. I'm looking for a link.

I've seen them... a definite improvement. Nothing much different than the way college logos are going these days.

Definite upgrade, but IMHO, not quite a D-1A caliber mark. For some reason I'm getting a mid-minor league hockey crest vibe from this logo, but it still trumps the high school caliber logo they were using.

While a buffalo or bison is a large animal, doesn't it come off as too "lean"? For football, I just hope they rid themselves of the horns and go with an interlocking "UB". Even if you leave football out of the equation, UB is a floundering athletic department with a new AD and football coach. This change is not going to build up spirit or increase sales that much. That is just a difficlut job to take regardless of sport.

I definitely think the new bull is an improvement over the old bull... that old one was an embarassment. But I kind of hope they DON'T mess with the helmets, because I kind of like the horns there. Interlocking UB is just boring for a helmet logo.

I agree. These both look pretty terrible and UB should be able to come up with better.

EDIT: no hotlinking allowed from nationalchamps.net. Bummer. I just showed that the UB helmets of 2000 looked very much like the UK helmets of today.

And they both look terrible.

Great perspective on the logo.

Does anyone know if their helmet will change?

The buffalo is an inherently cool looking animal.

Why was it so hard for the Sabres to create a decent logo?

You know that its a Bull right?

That's what I was just about to say...

The animal in both logos (old and new) is a bull, not a buffalo, folks.

According to WGR's Brian Koziol, who was at the press conference, the athletic colors are now blue, white, and grey and the helmet will in fact be blue with the white UB monogram. Also, the jerseys will have "Buffalo" on the front and not have names on the back, supposedly to reinforce the team concept. Also, it was mentioned that the jerseys have been simplified. I hope they find a happy medium between the Drew Haddad-era practice jersey look and the current look, which I didn't really have a problem with.

[sarcasm] Combine this with naming Joe Hesketh as the UB pitching coach, and UB athletics is going places! Maybe I should have paid the $50 for a season ticket as an alumnus...[/sarcasm]

This almost looks like something from Joe Bosack. He has been going towards this style lately. Its nice, I like it. But it does have that Non-Division 1 feeling to it.

Bulls Unveil New Athletic Mark

New logo is first for Bulls since 1996; also announce change in football helmets and uniforms

The UB athletic department's new logo features a boldly designed, fierce charging Bull.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo athletic department unveiled its new athletic logo today as well as comprehensive changes to both its football helmet and uniforms.

The new mark, which features a boldly-designed, fierce charging Bull, is the first new logo for Buffalo athletics since 1996. The logo came about through the work of the Bulls' marketing and communications departments in conjuction with University Marketing and Creative Services, which took the project from conception to completion. The lead design was done by Alan Kegler and his design team at Creative Services, with Peter Killian, Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Creative Services at UB, overseeing the project.

"We are excited to present a new look for UB Athletics befitting the direction of our program," said Warde Manuel, Director of Athletics. "Our old mark has served us well over the last nine years, but I felt that with the new energy and direction being provided by President Simpson it was time for something new. I also feel that the strength of the "Bull" is in its entire body, not just its head, which was previously presented. Our new logo has the strength, the fearless attitude and the combative spirit that our athletic department will need to achieve our goals."

When evaluating the mark, the Athletic Department engaged several focus groups, both on and off campus, to obtain feedback and recommendations that ultimately led to the new look of UB Athletics.

The new mark, available in several formats, will be available on merchandise exclusively online at www.buffalobulls.com starting on July 21, before an expected fall rollout in area retail stores.

In addition to the new mark, Buffalo also unveiled its new football jerseys and helmets which will debut in head coach Turner Gill's first game versus Temple on Thursday, Aug. 31 at UB Stadium. The uniforms, custom designed by Nike through Ad Pro Sports in Buffalo, have a traditional Blue & White design with the word "Buffalo" above the number on the front of the jersey. The Bulls' helmets will display a new design of the "interlocking" UB ? featuring a gray outline ? on a blue helmet.

"It is my belief that a football helmet needs to have a traditional and consistent look," said Manuel. "We have had many different helmet orientations since returning to Division I and it is my expectation that this will remain the look for Buffalo football for many, many years to come."
