MLB changes for 2007?

Why would the mod edit a post where I said that I wasn't a newbie? Is that how bad this board has gotten.

He just wants posters to stay on topic.

And on topic, I'd rather see the Dbacks lose purple than the Rockies. I get the whole Rockies-purple thing, and I even don't think the purple alt is HIDEOUS, but the black sleevless one is. Get rid of that and the Rockies are decent looking.

Agreed. The Rockies having purple makes perfect sense. Any other color there would seem improper. (Purple mountain majesties, and all.) I like their usually modest use of purple, and while I don't like the purple alt jersies, they could be worse. I hate purple uniforms in general, but for the most part the Rox use it OK, and it actually makes sense given their nickname/location.

The D-Backs purple, on the other hand, is a hideous shade, and I'd be happy to see it go.

Battlefield Report: Forces of Purple in Full Retreat!

A highly classified communiqué arrived at Uni Watch HQ the other day, courtesy of an anonymous source with the Arizona Diamondbacks. After extensive decoding by the Uni Watch cryptographers, here's the full text of the message:

"I work for the Arizona Diamondbacks Team Shop, and I've got a juicy tidbit I know you'll be interested in: The DBacks are losing the purple for 2007. Their color scheme is apparently going to be a sandy type of red with black trim. Former DBack Matt Williams (who's now with the front office) modeled the new uniforms for a group of season ticket holders. They were told to keep it under their hats, but I guess they have as hard a time keeping their mouths shut as I do."

Uni Watch was excited but suspicious. Might this be an enemy spy, or perhaps a merry prankster, looking to have a bit of fun at Uni Watch's purple-averse expense? (Don't scoff -- just last week, longtime Uni Watch pal/antagonist the Rev. Nørb showed up at a Uni Watch gathering in Milwaukee with a seemingly endless supply of purple jerseys -- and brought along some additional purple party favors for good measure. But Uni Watch digresses ?)

"No, it's for real," the source insisted. "Our bosses put a stop on all orders of DBacks merch back in April. We all thought it was weird to stop ordering merchandise in the first month of the season. Then we started hearing the rumors about the meeting with Matt Williams. At first I thought it was bogus, but we started hearing it from a whole lot of people. They were all saying the same thing: The uniform was red, white, and black, and the main logo was a 'D' that was similar to the current D/snake logo, but more realistic-looking."

A jubilant Uni Watch happily counts this as the latest in an encouraging string of defeats for the sports world's most loathsome color. As most of you probably know, the Bucks recently banished purple from their logo (new uniforms, presumably based on the updated color scheme, are set to debut shortly), and images of a purple-free Raptors uni, taken from the new NBA 2K7 video game, have been circulating, as well. Of course, a few teams will always be hopeless, but it's now clear that victory, dear comrades, is within our grasp.

"If things have gone wrong, I'm talking to myself, and you've got a wet towel wrapped around your head."

They have done a fantastic job at keeping this underwraps. I live in Phoenix and have heard not a peep from anywhere but this board. I love the snake logo, not as much as Tucson's snake, but I like the D snake. The report says the snake will also change. This is very exciting.

If this is true about the Diamondbacks, this is a horrible change. Why would they drop a very unique color scheme to look exactly like the Astros?

I don't like Arizona's current look, but it isn't because of the colors. The road look is terrible, and the home look isn't much better. Their original jerseys and hats were very good.

Color Change = Good...

D-Snake Logo = BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDD!!

Sorry, but if you're gonna have a letter(s) on a hat as an initial (such as the Cards STL, or Padres SD, but not A's or Sox, those spell words....sorta), it should always be the LOCATION, not the nickname. Rockies don't fall under here as they have a letter for BOTH the location and nickname.

Man, if they would ditch the d-snake, they'd be closer to perfect. Now they're halfway there. LOSE THE D-SNAKE! LOSE THE D-SNAKE! B)

Why not have a D-Snake? What is wrong with it. I think a CR or a STL is much more boring than a D-Snake. The StL and NY and B from boston have history and tradition, but even the Cards have a critter on their other hats. Arizona has no tradition, other than looking ridiculous while winning a World Series.

The color change is also another step away from Colangelo. He loved Purple and this flys in his face. I think it is great. Notice the colors of Gila River Casino that is the main sponsor of the team, it has been moving toward brick red and tan as well.

I hope they go for a simplified wordmark and get rid of any trace of that southwestern theme. I get that they are the desert southwest, but that always looks AWFUL on sports uniforms (see: Coyotes, Phoenix).

Dropping the purple is great news. But alas, keeping the D instead of an A cap logo is not so great. In fact, it sucks.

I, too, agree that having the location's monogram instead of the team nickname monogram is the way to go for a logo, but that A was HIDEOUS, and definitely don't mind seeing it go.

It's not the snake I have a problem with, it's the D. Nickname monograms just don't work on hats. Just doesn't seem right. I'm not saying it's a totally bad thing to do, Angels make it work, but in my opinion, and apparently others, locations should be monogramed instead.

I much prefer the "D" snake, after originally hating it when it first popped up on their purple batting helmets early in their existence, while they seemed to wear the "A" on their field hats. It grew on me, though. I coach Little League, and we were the D-backs three years ago. I figured we'd get the purple "A" hat, but got the black "D" hat, and I probably wear that hat more than most I've accumulated over the course of the twelve teams I've coached. Even though I think the logo is too big for an MLB hat (you hear me, Black-n-Gray Jays?), the design is cool.

Now, if they're taking over the Astros' color scheme, maybe the 'Stros will revert back to navy and orange (wishful thinking inserted here). I always thought their pre-rainbow 196501970 unis would be cool again, with the navy hat with orange star and white H. I've never embraced the '90s-'00s era shooting star hat, in either incarnation. The current one is definitely better than the more slanted one that went with the navy and gold look, but still, I prefer a letter on a cap usually (with my apologies to the Orioles and the Joe Carter Blue Jays--two bird caps I love).

I hope they keep some of their southwest-looking design. Purple and teal was overdone the moment the Hornets introduced it with Kelly Tripucka and Rex Chapman (go UK) in Charlotte, but the southwest design was one good thing the D-backs did that set them apart. Doesn't need to be overdone like the Coyotes, but a slight tip of the cap to the largest Native American tribe and reservation in the country (Navajo) and Arizona's hundreds of other tribes is a good thing. I just don't want them to look like the Astros on days Houston wears the rust caps. Hopefully the new look is unique to itself.

I agree that a team basically owes it to its hometown to wear its location initial on its cap. If a team wants to wear its team initial, or a symbol or something, on the road, that's fine with me too, as long as the road jersey uses the location name. (And nothing irks me more than teams that wear the location and team initials together. Who in Colorado ever said to himself, "You know, what I really want is a CR cap" before the Rockies came around? That's also the biggest reason I despise the old Brewers cap logo.) As long as pro sports teams are going to ask for public subsidies, then they had darn well think of themselves as civic representatives -- and both wear and sell jerseys and caps with the city/state name.

So I've always liked the D-Backs for wearing the A at home and the snake D on the road.

That said, I don't mind when a team varies from my rule of thumb as long as it does a good job and as long is it's a team I don't much care about. Like the Orioles. If I lived in Baltimore, I'd be upset at the lack of a B cap, but I don't, and that's a pretty bird they have on their caps, so the Orioles are fine. And the A's can trace their team-initial tradition back to the 1860s, so that works for me too. So I'll look forward to seeing the new snake D logo. I'd prefer to see an updated A, but I'll give the D-Backs a chance.
