Fred T. Jane Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 The Islanders sign G Rick DiPietro to a 15-year deal...Link Garth Snow and Charles Wang know a good goalie when they see one! [Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008 Attention: In order to obtain maximum enjoyment from your stay at the CCSLC, the reader is advised that the above post may contain large amounts of sarcasm, dry humour, or statements which should not be taken in any true sort of seriousness. OnWis97 Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 It seems that Magic Johnson's contract should be running out about now. dfwabel Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 The salary cap era has definately hit "My NHL". I think it is safe to say that he will not see the entire length of the contract. A 40 year old goalie for $4 mil? The best part is to see the error of their previous ways as look at the Yashin contract, 10 years for $87 million in 2001.
CJR Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Sure am glad we had that lockout to get a salary cap to stop the crazy deals. FantasyHockeySim.com || DetroitHockey.Net || DetroitHockey.Net FHL || cjr.dev
Fred T. Jane Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Sure am glad we had that lockout to get a salary cap to stop the crazy deals. Well, from a monetary standpoint, the terms of the contract aren't that wild in terms of yearly salary, as DiPietro would probably get that if he were on the free agent market, but the length of the deal just scerams Charles Wang had his fingers right in it.The good news for the Isles, of course, is that there's no need to worry about losing DiPietro for, well, ever. DEAD! Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 ..... we all know why DiPietro got a 15-year deal.... to groom him as the next Islanders GM..... I saw, I came, I left.

Right, I'm not complaining about the money here (although unless he reaches his potential, DiPietro's not worth it). I'm just saying that if you take away the ability to screw up finanically, the owners will still find a way to do something crazy. Shumway Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Maybe in one of those 15 years, DiPi'll have the year he's been expected to have.
budbowl77 Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Yep..all the Islander haters out there..i didnt know they exsisted outside of Manhattan.
tp49 Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Giving a goalie a 15 year contract is assanine, so was giving Yashin a 10 year deal. I thought bad deals went the way of Mad Mike. I can understand wanting to lock a player up long term but this is taking it too far.
youcan'tseeme Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 This contract makes me think Charles Wang thought why lock him up long term, when i could lock him up full term?
jkrdevil Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 The salary cap era has definately hit "My NHL". I think it is safe to say that he will not see the entire length of the contract. A 40 year old goalie for $4 mil? The best part is to see the error of their previous ways as look at the Yashin contract, 10 years for $87 million in 2001. This isn't the NFL, all contracts are guaranteed so the Isles are stuck with him. Also remember that the cap hit is the average of the contract that means 4.5 million will count against the cap every year for him. The contract is so long that it would be difficult to move down the road plus buying him out would probably cost more money when you include the cost of a new goalie. When you combine this with Yashins crazy 10 year contract and you get an Islander team that will be handicapped from competing for the next 15 years.
Brendan Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 great deal by Islanders gm charles wang. You think after giving yashin that contract they would learn i guess not. Im sure the NHL isn't to happy about this either.
FiddySicks Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 just screams Wang had his fingers right in it. wow. On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.)
Shumway Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Yep..all the Islander haters out there..i didnt know they exsisted outside of Manhattan. I actually really like the Isles...I just think Ricky D's been underperforming. I don't think he, or probably most players, deserve a 15-year contract.
jkrdevil Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Yep..all the Islander haters out there..i didnt know they exsisted outside of Manhattan. You are kidding yourself if you don't think the Islanders have become the laughing stock of the league. It's not just the stuff that has happened this year which made it worse it's all the stuff that has happened since Al Arbour left. It's sad but it's true.
BCBoy Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Wow. A 35 + year old goalie still earning 4.5 million a year? They better hope DiPietro turns into the next great goalie for this deal to even look remotely smart...this is an insane deal. Looks like Wang made this deal more than Snow, so now I ask, did Wang give Snow the job just so he wouldn't have a REAL GM slam him for the moves he made and both him about who is in charge or the signings...
steiny_ramone Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Terrible deal. DiPi'll never live up to being a first overall pick. He was about 32nd last year in GAA, IIRC. And now he'll spend the rest of his career trying to prove that he's worth that contract. In a few years he'd have difficulty being the starter on most teams. And the Gong Show that is the New York Islanders rolls along... facespace?http://www.myspace.com/seancalcottmusic http://www.myspace.com/forgottentoys
