DG_YouKnowWhatThatMeans Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 I just saw an ad for this. The 24 looks very, very strange. Has Kobe said why he switched yet? 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags
Cyclopsis Joe Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 I just saw an ad for this. The 24 looks very, very strange. Has Kobe said why he switched yet? Uhh, he's Kobe? I don't speak for democrats, democrats don't speak for me.
RamblinGamblinTiger Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 Probably looks strange because it's been photoshopped?

BBTV Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 He wore #24 in high school. Actually, 33. "The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed."

DDR Posted September 20, 2006 Posted September 20, 2006 Marketing Exec. #1: "Thanks for coming, Kobe. We'd like to sell more of your jerseys than we're currently selling, but we think that most people that would want to buy it already own it. Any ideas?"Kobe Bryant: "Ummm...I can average 70 if you want. I'll just have Lamar sent to New Jersey."Marketing Exec. #2: "That won't be necessary. We were actually thinking that you can switch your number, thereby making your #8 out-of-date and uncool so everyone has to rush out and by the new Kobe jersey."Kobe: "....sure. I guess. What number?"Marketing Exec. #2: "Who cares. The only number that matters is the one on the price tag. Mwahahahaha."

cubbies06 Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Didnt his dad, Joe Bryant, wear #24 when he played? "We root for the laundry"(Jerome Seinfeld)
Old School Fool Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Didnt his dad, Joe Bryant, wear #24 when he played? Yes, I think. Â
jlm17fan Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 One Rumor I heard is that this year Nike will be making the last Air Jordan, conveniently being Air Jordan XXIII. Wherever this rumor is from said that then Kobe would start a line of shoes starting at XXIV. I seem to recall hearing this on ESPN radio during the Dan Patrick Show.
63Bulldogs63 Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 He wore both in High School. Frosh year he wore 24, then changed soph to 33 for the rest of high school. I due agree that its to sell more, but this is what i read at wikipedia... Late in the season, it was reported that Bryant would change his jersey number from #8 to #24 at the start of the 2006-07 NBA season. #24 was Bryant's first high school number, before changing to #33.[3] After the Lakers' season ended, Bryant made a television appearance on TNT, where he stated that when he came into the league, he wanted #24, but it was unavailable. He also wanted #33, but he couldn't, because it was already retired by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's number. He went on to say that he believed the new number signified the start of the second half of his career
DG_YouKnowWhatThatMeans Posted September 21, 2006 Author Posted September 21, 2006 He went on to say that he believed the new number signified the start of the second half of his career That half where he is on losing teams without a chance of championships? Awesome. 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags

Wherever this rumor is from said that then Kobe would start a line of shoes starting at XXIV. I seem to recall hearing this on ESPN radio during the Dan Patrick Show. There's an older thread discussing all the rumors for why Kobe switched. I also mentioned this one about the Air Jordans. I'll see if I can dig up the link to the old thread..

dpnation Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 So 8 came from where, 2 x 4? This is what's listed on nba.com, so it's probably the most reliable info:Kobe chose the number 8 because his uniform number as a high schooler at the ADIDAS ABCD Camp was 143 (1+4+3=8), but the number switch was easy. "I wore the number 8 when I was a kid playing in the Italian leagues, so it was a smooth transition from number 33."
JayMack23 Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Heres my stance on the number change. Now granted I hate Kobe Bryant as a person, but respect him as a player.I think Kobe's doing this sublimitable (sp?) messege crap saying he is one up on Jordan. We all know Kobe is a self righteous type of guy, and I think he will do anything and everything to make himself bigger then Jordan ever was.To be honest, can you blame the guy? More money, more endorsements. This number change keeps "Kobe news" fresh for the media. The guys a heck of a buisinessman.I still cant stand him though.
The_Admiral Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 That was my instant reaction. Jordan +1. Whatever, dude.On a similar note, I wish Lebron James had picked a number to call his own instead of "paying tribute" to Jordan. Everyone knows that Magic is 32, Bird is 33, and Jordan is 23. Pick your own number. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
