yh
Rats! Beaten to the punch! Mr. Buchanan was a close friend of the chief of staff in the Missouri Treasurer's Office where I happened to be interning the summer before I entered law school. This was in the summer of 1990 when he was being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He had called her looking for help in putting together his acceptance speech and since I was doing speechwriting and was the office's resident sports guru I got to work with him on it. I only got to deal with him by phone and fax but he was really nice and a great guy to work with. He wound up using the text I wrote for his concluding paragraph verbatim. What really struck me later was that he knew at the time that he had terminal cancer and was looking for this speech to be his legacy. To know that I had something to do with that was truly an honor.
