ROCHitman
He was with his flight instructor. They were the only two to perish in the accident.NYC allows small planes to fly below 11K feet along the East River for sight seeing/instruction. That is apprently what he was doing.I heard one report that said he radio to an airport (not sure which one) and said he was having fuel problems.Sorry about my comment about payroll savings.I am a fringe Yankee fan since I live in upstate NY.Lidle was a UFA to be.I think both games will go on as planned if rain doesn't play a part. FiddySicks
I wonder if the yanks will do all of the same things they did with Munson when he died. retired number, locker in his honor, ect ect. zig
The news was on the background for me all day and I have following the whole thing. It was weird because all of a sudden they were talking about the Plane being Lidle's and then like 5 minutes later they announced that he had died. All I can really say is RIP and rest in peacep.s. If the game is cancelled it will be because of the rain and not Lidle's death. I heard that if they do play it there would be a moment of scilence. wdm1219inpenna
It would appear that a good many of you are younger than I am (I turn 40 in just over 2 months), and being a fan of the New York Yankees for 32 of those 40 years of my life, I feel the need to share a few thoughts with you gentle readers on the boards. When I first saw the picture of the building on fire, it of course conjured up the haunting memories of 9/11. How ironic that today is 10/11. It is shocking, and numbing to say the least, to see and hear this news unfolding before our very eyes. The sad and tragic death of Henry Louis Gehrig was an expected event, but every bit as sad and gut-wrenching. His life story is told in the movie "Pride of the Yankees" starring Gary Cooper. Any fan of the Yankees, any baseball fan even, should watch this film. I first saw it at age 7, in the summer of 1974, watched it with my dad, and learned that he was also a Yankee fan. On that day I became a fan also.In August 1979, my mother and other relatives and I were vacationing at Seaside Heights, NJ when we heard the news of Thurman Munson's death due to a plane crash. I won a picture of Thurman during my stay down the shore, and it is one of the centerpieces of my Yankees paraphenalia here in my den. Today's death harkened me back to that day, when I was still an impressionable pre-teen.Sadly it does take an event such as this to put things in perspective. The shock will fade, the hurt will slowly fall by the wayside, meantime, this is a somber lesson to treat each day of life with the utmost respect, and to treat one another with the utmost respect as well.Let not your hearts be troubled. For reasons unknown to us all, it was his time. As a Yankee fan I was very pleased when the team acquired him. I live near Philadelphia and so I was able to see him pitch as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies as well. I know I speak on behalf of everyone on this board when I say my thoughts, prayers, and deepest of sympathies go out to Cory's surviving family members, and to the flight instructor's family members as well. Like with Dale Earnhardt Sr., and Steve Irwin the "crocodile hunter", let us draw some comfort from the knowledge that Cory and his instructor died doing something that they truly loved, and had a passion for.Bill McD. TBGKon
This seriously came as a shock to me. I had heard about the plane crash earlier in the day, and then I had gone to the gym later in the afternoon, saw that Lidle passed away, and that it was due to the plane crash earlier. I was in complete shock.RIP Cory Lidle
