Christmas or thanksgiving?

I said Thanksgiving. It's not as commercialised, you don't have to buy stuff for other people. I wonder, does anyone live in an area where a radio station is playing Christmas music 24/7 right now? (Other than Toronto)

Of course both holidays involve eating all that food that would be better served in Ethiopia!  :P

I saw, I came, I left.

I think all non-Americans would say Christmas because we don't celebrate you're "other" Thanksgiving.

I'm Canadian and I voted Thanksgiving! :D

I'm looking forward to St. Valentine's Day ...... NOT!

I saw, I came, I left.

Yes - here in St. Louis we have at least one station doing it.  They're changing their format from 80's-90's music to something else (TBA) in January, so they scrapped the format Thanksgiving week and will be playing Christmas/Wintertime/Holiday music 24/7 til Jan. 2.

I've got it on in my office right now.  It's the only time when you can hear Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole and Dean Martin on the radio in this town.

I voted for Christmas even though I happen to be Jewish.

i have a dumb question. Do you get offended when people just call it Christmas season instead of the HOLIDAY season. In this Politcally Correct society we have nobody can call it christmas anymore. We even had a debate on what type of music we should have at our "Holiday" party. I think you should call it whatever you celebrate. Personally i think holiday is LAME cause it groups it all together.

No, personally, I don't get offended because, let's face it, IT IS THE CHRISTMAS SEASON!!!  Sure, not everybody celebrates Christmas, but there can be no denying that the "Winter Holiday Season" exists because of Christmas.    But for Christmas, there would be no Christmas break, no Christmas cookies (and I put away my fair share of Archway Party Treats and Gingerbread Men), peace on Earth, good will towards men, etc.  IMHO, it truly IS the most wonderful time of the year.  No, I don't embrace what many call the "true meaning of Christmas" - the birth of Jesus and his importance to the Christian people, but I sure as heck embrace what has become the very strong undercurrent of the Christmas season - a time for family and friends to get together and celebrate and the general lifting of spirits that seems to happen every November and lasts until the January holiday hangover.

I don't get all tied up in the PC stuff.  When someone wishes me a Merry Christmas or sends me a Christmas card, I never think to myself that they are trying to convert me or force me to observe Christianity.  I feel that they are trying to wish me good tidings and let me know they are thinking of me during the season.  Granted, I didn't really appreciate it when my school assemblies injected hardcore religion into Christmas assemblies and other holiday-related activities, but really, the offenses were minor, few and far between and were borne less out of a sense of pushing religion in school than they were out of the school administration forgetting that there might be a couple of students who don't observe the holiday in a religious fashion.  And once those offenses were pointed out, there was never a problem again.  That being said, I do very much appreciate when someone recognizes that I don't observe the religious aspects of Christmas and wishes me a Happy Hannukkah or makes some other kind of gesture to show their thoughtfulness.  It's a very nice thing to do but certainly nothing that I demand or expect.  I feel very blessed to live in a diverse society where I can count tons of Christians and observers of other faiths (or no faith at all) among my friends.

FYI, for those who aren't aware, Hannukkah is a very minor holiday on the Jewish calendar.  It commemorates the Maccabees' (Israelites of 2100 years ago) victory over the invading Syrian forces and the rededication of the main Temple in Jerusalem.  The Temple had been desecrated by the invaders and once it had been restored, there was supposed to be enough oil to keep the Eternal Flame )that all Temples are supposed to keep lit) ignited for one day.  However it remained lit for eight days, enough time to get a new supply of oil.  Hence eight days of Hannukkah and the menorah with eight candles (plus one which lights the rest).  However, around the turn of the 1900's the holiday became commercialized so as to provide Jewish people in the Western world an opportunity to participate in the Christmas season, given the holidays' usual proximity to each other.

I figure that is how most people not of the christian faith are. It should be taken not just as a "Religous" holiday, but one of uniting humanity. Glad to hear you get enojyment out of the season also. :D

Thanks, and by the way, (it goes without saying)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

I tried to explain that to my mother when she freaked on me for celebrating Christmas with the family even tho I'm not of that religion.

It's more of a family get-together, be happy, spread joy type of days.
