Let the Braden Looper Starting Pitcher Era begin...ugh...

Well he does have a damn fine first name. :D

Zito to the Giants eh? Good move bringing one ace in after losing another. He'll also help their young and talented rotation. It's a shame he'll have only one real offensive threat to back him up.

Still no real Pirate moves? Nothin in the paper, nothin at all really!

According to most people on the Pirates MLB.com board, you guys already have the best atarting rotation in the league.

Four teams haven't spent a dime on a free agent so far this year - Arizona, Florida, Pittsburgh, and Washington. It looks like they are all fighting for the bottoms of their respective divisions again this year, while the two teams that have spent the most money are still likely to finish under .500.

Save the slugalo.

Jeff Suppan to the Brewers for 4years 42 mil.

Can't blame him for taking it.

I guess the Cardinals offered something around 3 years...20 million.

Thanks for the World Series...here's a well below average offer...

Let the Braden Looper Starting Pitcher Era begin...ugh...

I'm hoping the Cardinals can resign Mulder and/or Weaver, so don't worry too much yet.

The Cards could have offered Suppan more than they did, but there's no way they should have given him what Milwaukee did.

Also, the Giants are nuts giving that contract to Zito. Why they didnt just resign Schmidt I have no idea.

Oh well, at least now Boras can get to work on Weaver signing back up with the Cards.

about zito

"Ironically, all three pitchers to sign $100 million deals -- Zito, Hampton and Kevin Brown -- signed with NL West teams. Brown became baseball's first $100 million man when he signed with the Dodgers prior to 1999."

FYI - Hampton and Brown deals can go down as complete failures.

"Try not to have a good time ... This is supposed to be educational."

*sigh* I'm disappointed that Zito went to the Giants, just because I wanted them to suck real bad this year so the Dodgers wouldn't have to worry about them. But, this is one of the craziest deals any team could make. At least the Jason Schmidt deal was only 3 years. I predict Zito has an injury during the first four or so years, and the Giants management lives to regret it.

How the F&*# is Vernon Wells in the top-10 for MLB salaries? Jesus H. Christ!

Shhhh, don't piss off the Graphite Mafia. They are very powerful around here.

It looks like they are all fighting for the bottoms of their respective divisions again this year, while the two teams that have spent the most money are still likely to finish under .500.

Of those four teams, I'd say three are in a part of their economic cycles where it doesn't make sense to spend a lot of money on free agents. The fourth, Pittsburgh, is just hopelessly mismanaged.

Florida has a ton of young talent but also tremendous uncertainty -- will the move, will they fold? I doubt they could get a major free agent to come there now. They're at least 2 or 3 years away from any kind of contention again. In the meantime, they're leaving major holes unfilled. Who's gonna play CF for the Marlins?

Washington is less rich in prospects and is basically in a holding pattern until their stadium is built, at which time they will most definitely splash the cash. Whether they become a big player in free agency in the long term is still up in the air.

The best situation, in my homeriffic but well founded opinion, is that of the Arizona Diamondbacks. They've got quality homegrown and otherwise acquired prospects at the major league level -- CF Chris Young, RF Carlos Quentin, 1B Conor Jackson, SS Stephen Drew and a duo of Chris Snyder and Miguel Montero at C. They've also got young veterans in Cy Young SP Brandon Webb, 2B Orlando Hudson and 3B Chad Tracy. They're poised to be very good for a very long time.

However, the Diamondbacks are not ready to spend big on free agents just yet. They're a year away from shedding the burden of deferred money from their last go-round as contenders. Next off-season, they'll have a year of experience for their young studs and the financial flexibility to add the pitching and the power bat they need to be a force.

Frankly, while the Dodgers have the capacity to spend big money every year, there's no team in the the NL West that is set up as well as the Diamondbacks. They're structurally sound and they're prepared to spend the money when the time is right. Patience, patience, and enjoy watching the youngsters develop. ^_^

It'll be really interesting to see Hampton return this spring. All the reports I've heard mention he'll be ready to go Opening Week.

Like I said in the other thread, I refuse to believe that Barry Zito signed with the Giants, because, as we all know, the Giants do not sign anyone under the age of 35 under any circumstances...

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

According to the Sun, The O's signed Aubrey Huff to a 3 year 20 million deal

I like this deal because it gives the O's a decent power hitter to help protect Tejada. Although I am confused as to why there was so little interest in him. I've heard he wanted to be paid at least $7 million a year, but no one was willing to pay it. Which seems odd in such an inflated market.

I've always liked him, but I think his appeal has always been a bit hype.

He's a 20+ HR guy, 80+ RBI, .280s hitter. Not bad, but not great.

To compare, Juan Encarnacion and Jaques Jones put up similar numbers, yet they both signed 3 year deals around 15 mil last year. (I'm averaging everything, Jaques puts up better HRs and I think makes a bit more)

He definatly has some nice compareables. His first five on baseball-reference are Vernon Wells, Ellis Valentine, Shea Hillenbrand, Trot Nixon, Tony Conigliaro. Not bad company.

Just so you know Similarity scores start and 1000 and various stat differences are subtracted. Example, 1 point for every home run. You can definatly have some variations because of age. So a better one would be his age 29 compareables which aren't bad either. They include: Jermaine Dye (2), Ellis Burks (9), and Canada's native son Larry Walker (10)

Ellis Burks

Man its been a long time since ive heard that name. He kicked ass for the Giants, then he just kinda fell off the face of the earth when we went to Cleveland, or wherever he ended up.

Mark Mulder reupped with the Cardinals.

2 years guaranteed...13 mil guaranteed. If he meets incentives the team can extend the contract an extra year and the deal could be worth up to 45mil.

Not bad. He won't be back until July however and the cardinals could go with "bullpen starts" every 5th day until Mulder returns. We'll see. Its not bad for the money considering what he's capable of and what the market is. That contract will buy you a 12 game winner or so in this years market. OR a 6.00 ERA guy like Jason Marquis....
