Reds unveil new unis

Overall I like the look of these uni's. However I'm not a fan of the font, I think the Reds should stick to standard block numbers and lettering similar to the Cardinals. Its clean and easy to read. The drop shadow could work if they toned it down a little, it seems just a little extreme in the pictures.

Secondly, I thought the Reds were going to switch from black accent to navy blue? I was kind of looking forward to that although it would have been very similar to the Cardinals. Switch these to Block letter and they have a keeper.

I don't like the way they mixed a classic look with a modern look. I really don't like the font at all and the added white around the numbers and letters

This makes it look weird on the classic looking front of the jersey where the number sticks out too much

The away is much better and for some reason the font looks better in the front and back

I like the alt becasue the numbers are easy to read and the red isn't too bright.

I love the away, hate the home and like the alt so overall it's an ok change

Hate hate the home uni. Go back to the late 60s uni. The piping and the number placement are God. Awful.

The road and alternates aren't bad, but I can't emphasize enough how cheapjack that red piping looks.

I don't know if anyone noticed this or not, but the home and road uniforms have different size numbers on the back. If you look at the slide show, the home unis have larger numbers on the back than do the road unis, as portrayed by Todd Coffey (roads; 5th pic) and Chris Denorfia (home; last pic)

Has this been done on other uni sets? What are your thoughts on this design idea?? I don't think it's bad or anything, I just think it's interesting... :therock:

I know the Giants have larger numbers on their homes than they do on their roads and BPs, but that's mainly due to the fact that they go nameless at home. nobody else pops out to me right now, though.

Alright, I've let it sink in for a while before offering my "final" verdict, but here it goes.

Take last season's set, add sleeves, subtract pinstripes, and you have perfection.

These new ones are not bad, but they appear way too contrived (olde-timey number and letter font with modern shadowing, old Mr. Red), and there are some glaring inconsistancies (piping vs. sleeve trim, sleeve-trim is reversed, etc.) that keep them from being an upgrade. They got very close, but could have done better by just modifying last season's set.

Here is my solution: Keep last year's uniform, except drop all of the black. That, my boys, is perfection. Well, as close to perfection as you can get this side of the Yankees and Cardinals.

I do have to say this is possibly the first uniform change that, if not mentioned on the boards, I would have totally missed. Its totally uninspired IMO. Not that its NOT an upgrade, but honestly its not much. Could have easily been better, could have been easily worse. Overall, meh. BTW, that box at my store, had ONE of the new D Backs caps. Nothing else. My reaction was pretty similar as it has been to these new unis. Meh.

Over all, I really like them. While I do like the font, I do not like the fact that the "REDS" in the "Wishbone-C" logo font and the "CINCINNATI" font are completely different. So, you end up with the "C" font, the "REDS" font and the "CINCINNATI" and numeric font. I would like the wishbone C font to stay, then have REDS be stylized a bit more to match the new font.

The names on the back are a bit too much, I think a more standard type would be better, maybe matching the REDS font (since it is in use).

I agree with a couple of exceptions. The background on the home jersey's C-Reds logo was black. They changed it back to red, and that's a good thing. Also, the black caps and undershirts had to go. Now the major abomination they have left are the red caps with black bills.

I may be wrong, but I don't think people will have so many problems with the piping when they see them in action. The piping kinda jumps out when looking at still photos, but it will blend in better on the field. Just a hunch...and hoping.

No, because red pinstripes end up looking like pink.

Only if you're stuck in the 20th Century with an analog TV set.

Red zig-zag stripes look red. Red "regular" pinstripes look pink. At least the Phillies do (live or in HD - doesn't matter.)

  • 6 years later...

McCarthy mentioned in the "2013 MLB Logo and Uniform Changes" thread that it's hard to believe that the Reds current uniforms are now into their seventh season. It got me to thinking how this tenure ranks among all Reds uniforms throughout history. Here is what I came up with, somewhat arbitrarily starting with 1939.

It was sometimes difficult to determine or define what a "generation" of uniforms was. Sometimes only the chest logo on the roads changed, sometimes just the cap color, and sometimes the only change was the addition or removal of pinstripes to the home uniforms or white outlines on the road jerseys. I ignored these small changes and defined a change in generation as an overhaul of the look. I have usually separated 1972-87 and 1988-92, but to remain consistent with how I treated the earlier sets, I will combine them for this...

nl_1939_cincinnati_01.gif

1939-55: 17 seasons (socks and undershirts changed to red in 1947)

nl_1958_cincinnati_01.gif

1956-60: 5 seasons (chest logo was Mr. Red on roads in 1956, pinstripes added to homes in 1958)

nl_1961_cincinnati_01.gif

1961-66: 6 seasons

nl_1968_cincinnati_01.gif

1967-71: 5 seasons (home uniforms had pinstripes in 1967 and road lettering alternated between white outlines and no outlines)

nl_1972_cincinnati_01.gif

1972-92: 21 seasons (additional red stripe added to sleeves and vertical stripes added to pants in 1988)

nl_1993_cincinnati_01.gif

1993-98: 6 seasons

nl_2001_cincinnati_01.gif

1999-2006: 8 seasons

nl_2013_cincinnati_01.gif

2007-present: 7 seasons

So, once the current uniforms get into next season, they will tie the immediately previous set for third place in longevity since 1939 and second place since 1956.

In deciding whether to tack this onto an existing thread or start a new one, I found this one and decided to add to it. It was interesting to read some of the comments made back in 2006 and it made me wonder if anyone has changed their minds about the current uniforms? My opinion is pretty much the same as it was then. I was concerned that the black drop shadows were too thick and the numbers on back were too large, and both those issues got resolved before they went onto the field in 2007. I also hated the black bill on the road caps and still hate just as much today. Still wishing they'd get rid of it.

Thanks for digging for this up. It was fun reading everyone's reaction, mine included. It's interesting to see how the passage of time has changed the perception of the Reds and their uniforms.

The red on red cap is a bit much and I'm not in love with the seemingly small number font, but otherwise, I think they're a definite upgrade. They'll certainly be a fine representation of the team until it's inevitable uniform update in 2012. (Seriously, does any team in any league change its uniforms more often than the Reds?)

Nope.

My prediction: The road hats will be worn to start the season, then will start appearing less and less and eventually just dissappear, like the Jays' graphite hats and other hats...that have...done...the same.

How I wish this had happened. I hate the black-billed hat. It's one of the least necessary hats in baseball, especially since half the time they're on the road they're wearing a red-billed batting helmet. Just wear the damn red hats all the time.

Those pictures have settled it. I'm getting a gray road for christmas.

These uniforms make me happy for a few reasons. #1 Sleeves, glorious sleeves. The reds have been wearing vests since 93. 14 years in vests is 14 years too many for this reds fan. #2 no more pinstripes. Red pinstripes never look good, plain white is a good clean look that has always worked well for the reds (75,76,90) #3 That font. It's just so old timey and cool. I'm not a fan of it being used as the font for the players names, but as the road city font and number font it is great. #4 All red hat. This allows me to keep the same hat I've been wearing for the past 4 years and not have to get a new one.

Haha 19 year old me. I think less of the name and number font than I did at the time. I still have that hat, but have since purchased a new one. I'm okay with what the Reds wear now, but it's getting a little stale. If I was in charge of the Reds uniforms they'd be wearing button up versions of the 1990 uniforms.
