What were "U" thinking?

Sitting down and watching the South Florida ECU game, I keep noticing something about the USF uniforms that just bugs the crap outta me. Why does USF (and other schools, like Miami) use the letter U on their helmets? I mean its not a terrible logo, but couldnt they make something that fits their particular school a bit better than a U? Its like if four or fiive NFL teams wore the letter F for "Football" on the side of their helmets. I dunno, it just annoys me. What do you think?

The 'Canes actually implimented the "U" because of the vast amount of Universities and Colleges who sported the letter "M" on their helmets or as their primary logo. They were looking for a unique logo, and its worked pretty damn well since Miami is mostly known as "The U"

I like the UCF logo. A U with horns is pretty cool.

You mean USF. UCF's our rivals(-ish). The helmets are the only part of the uniform I don't like. It's been brought up before here, but it's the only place black is used in the uniform. I saw a concept somewhere that used an SF logo on the helmet, which I thought was pretty nice, I'd like to see an SF as a tertiary mark. Nice thing about this game though was we had 'USF' in an endzone, not Buccaneers.

Well, there's already a University of Central Florida, a University of Tampa and a St. Pete University, and Tampa Bay University would sound stupid.

Either way, I don't think they're about to change it.

I think you had a brain fart there. Isn't USF the Bulls and not the Buccaneers? :P

USF plays at Raymond James Stadium. They always have the Bucs' logos/endzones for their games.

another sidenote: while grocery shopping recently I noticed the similiaryity of this beef jerky

company logo and the USF logo. I actually like the jerky logo better because you can see the

bull head. I always wondered what al the extra angles in the USF logo was meant for.

Food for thought...pun intended.

While "Astrobull" might be able to shed more on this subject on recent logo history, but I asume he went to the papajohns.com bowl. I grew up in Tampa from 1979 until leaving for college in 1991.

1-Out of the schools in the State University System, when established, USF was the southernmost school. Unlike many states, there is not governmental difference between the "University of..." school, Florida State, florida A&M, and teh other schools named below. USF was the furthest south at the time, thus it is named so.

University of South Florida (Tampa) established in 1956

Florida Atlantic University (Boca Raton) established in 1961

University of Central Florida (Orlando) established in 1963

Florida Atlantic University (Miami-Dade) established in 1965

There have been two newer colleges/univeristies in SW Florida that have different names. Both further south than Tampa on I-75. Initially, there was the New College of the University of South Florida, now just called The New College of Florida. It is located is Sarasota. It was originally a private liberal arts college, but then became part of USF in the 1970's. It is the Honors College for the state. There is also Florida Gulf Coast University, established in 1991, but classes did not commence until 1997. It is located in Ft. Myers.

2-As for the "U with Horns" logo, it is the 3rd logo for USF that I remember. First was a stylized bull (or what they then called a "Golden Brahma") inside a gold baseball diamond. Next was the "Bull in motion". Currently, they have used the stylized "U".

Man, I never realized before how much that white space inside the U looks like a squared-off condom.

Thats a really large reservoir tip.

Chicks arent the only ones with "Maximum Flow Days"

:D

Wow, that was bad.
