The WAC

So yes, we all just witnessed the most amazing game in college football history as Boise State upset the Oklahoma Sooners (IMO of course, but its also my opinion that anyone who disagrees is frickin insane). So with the Boise win, Nevada's slim one point loss to Miami "The U", and San Jose State's thumping in the first ever New Mexico Bowl, (and durrr, howd I miss this one?) and Hawaii's big win over Arizona State, is this the catalyst that finally brings up the smaller confrences into BCS contention, or at least the WAC?

Heres what I think

Lord I hope so. Either way, ill just say this. Everyone in the WAC was pullin for Boise tonight, whether it be a few STHS alum's of mine who play for Fresno State, my best friend who goes to San Jose State, or me and the rest of the Reno Wolfpack faithful, we were all on the side of our confrence rivals tonight. I dont care who your pullin for, the WAC just won a huge fight tonight. Hell, most of you know my dislike for the University of Florida. But now I could care less. Nothing can ruin this year for me now. Congrats to Boise, congrats to the entire Western Athletic Confrence, congrats to the underdog everywhere.

So what are your opinions?

I might get roasted over the coals for this one but I don't think the WAC is there yet. Boise State is a great football team, don't get me wrong, but they rely to heavily on the trick plays IMO. If they were to play teams like Oklahoma every week the trick plays would slowly get figured out and would be useless. But beyond that, its one big win. Again, dont get me wrong it was a GREAT win, but compare that to the hundreds of bowl game wins the other divisions have. If Boise (and the other WAC teams) can schedule teams in the major conference, I say let them play for the crystal ball. But as for this year, I can't see them giving them a part of the National Title after beating one top teir teams while considering the schedule Ohio State and Florida had to go through.

But that's the problem, these big schools won't want to schedule the Boise State's and (before they joined the Big East) Louisville's because they're risking an easy win against a team they can't gain anything from.

Alot of teams won't play the smaller schools... Texas backed out of a game last year against Hawaii... Hawaii is trying to schedule USC and Louisville for next season and needs ESPN to help them out because thses schools don't wanna play them.. if they're so good why won't they play the smaller "mid-major" teams?

Trust me I know. My high school was a 2A school but we had a very sucessful football program. Every year we would ask the 4A and 5A schools to play us and they all turned us down for that exact reason. They have everything to lose and nothing to win. However, with these kinds of wins Boise (and the WAC) will build up a reputation (and ranking) that will get them those big games.

I am just saying they aren't there yet.

That's right. Hell Louisville is in the Big East now and they can't get out of conference games against SEC team except Kentucky which is basically forced to play them. They know these teams are good and can beat them so instead they go out and schedule a team like Western Carolina which they know will be an easy win. Then when it comes down to voting for the polls these same coaches that refuse to play them vote them down based on their schedule. It's the reason why the polls (especially the coaches) need to be dropped altogether and a playoff format strictly on record with extensive tie breakers needs to be adopted.

I see your point, but look at it this way. This season the WAC beat the Pac 10, the Big 12, the Mountain West, and were one point away from beating the ACC, two of those teams have won NATIONAL TITLES in the past decade. Sure its a bit of a stretch to say the WAC is the next big conference, but either way, thats an accomplishment that not many small conferences can brag about.

Its not that they are scared of losing, the major schools have to go undefeated to have a chance to go to the national championship game. When you are already playing 4-5 games in conference that you could easily lose, do you want to voluntarily add a game where the other team is good and has nothing to lose? I wouldn't want my team to do that.

The flaw isn't the big schools, it?s the system. If there was a playoff and you just had to be a top 4, 8, or 16 team, then you'll see more of these non-conference games.

The big schools run the system. So they are at fault. The BCS is there "concept" to shut put the non-BCS conferences. What may occur next season is Boise State may start out in the top 10. Outside of a loss to Hawai'i, they should be eligible for the BCS from the start. Instead of starting out very low in the top 25, they should be there quickly.

Just for fun...

This is Ohio State's schedule for 2006. Based on what you saw last night...

How many teams on it would you pick to easily beat Boise State?

Northern Illinois

Texas

Cincinnati

Penn State

Iowa

Bowling Green

Michigan State

Indiana

Minnesota

Illinois

Northwestern

Michigan

I see Boise going at least 8-4 against that schedule.

you know, boise gets blasted for using "a lot" of trick plays last night, but to be honest (and i admit i didn't watch the game from the first kick) i didn't see that many. i mean, there were the three that won them the game, but other than that i didn't see them attempting too many of them.

were there some that i missed?

Nope you saw all of them. For most of the game they just went punch for punch with the Sooners.

That, and a ridiculous momentum swing in the first moments of the game...Boise jumping to that 14 point lead with the crowd obviously in their corner was what made me think "Wow, if this game isn't a blowout, then they're gonna win. No way they lose."

yeah, i came in about there. but the sooners had all kinds of momentum when they intercepted that pass near the end of the game. when that interception was returned and they were showing shots of boise's sideline i was saying to myself that that was it and it was too bad. then boise comes back and sends it to overtime. then the sooners run one in on the second play, then i went to get some food and when i got back, the second trick play led to the third to the win. amazing.

I'd love to see that this Boise State win over Oklahoma become the catalyist for more mid-majors to crack the BCS, but I feel that it may be a fleeting fancy because of the nature of the beast.

Every year, teams change in terms of players. Who knows if Boise State can repeat a unbeaten season? Who knows if Nevada can keep fooling people with it's Pistol scheme? Who knows if Hawaii can come up with another Colt Brennan? Who knows if San Jose State isn't a major fluke?

It's too difficult to say that it'll be a BCS buster every year, but it's also too difficult to say it'll fall to the wayside at this point.
