oz615
Not that i personally care ,but they should've made an attempt to relocated to ether Memphis or Nashville seriously, because Tennessee is a great fanbase women's basketball w/ Tennessee,Vanderbilt in the top 25 and w/ Middle Tennessee on the rise,i don't see why not. Your Name Here
Knoxville is in the eastern part of Tennessee, Nashville in the center, and Memphis in the west. The Lady Vols don't draw much from either of the latter two. It could be that there are fans in those cities but that the trip is inconvenient or that the women's basketball fans are all in Knoxville. Vandy probably gets 3-5,000 on average and I'd bet that MT doesn't draw 2,000.

winters in buffalo
I'm surprised no one tried to lure them to Raleigh. They'd be competing against three other minor league teams (Durham Bulls, Carolina Mudcats and Carolina Railhawks) for attendance, but hoops is huge here. MadmanLA
Add this to the fact that now, according to a basketball website, the Houston Comets (one of the WNBA's flagship teams) is up for sale.

Mac the Knife
Sounds like the WNBA is a sinking shipHasn't it been from day one?It has been, simply because the NBA over-thought things from the beginning. Why do WNBA teams, for example, play in their NBA facilities in cities where they have an NBA counterpart? The cost involved in leasing an NBA-style facility, even with rent breaks due to the NBA tenant being there, are probably closed to double what it'd cost to rent another local facility used by a college/university - one that (1) is more realistic in terms of capacity (say, 8,000 vs. 18,000), and (2) would allow fans to feel even more close to the players.Next the WNBA labor costs are actually high. That sounds ridiculous when compared to their NBA counterparts, but the WNBA would've been well-served to either have a lock-out when the players threatened to strike a few years ago, or make a deal: we'll create a pool, dedicating 35% of our adjusted gross revenue (ticket sales and TV revenue, less cost of renting arenas, travel costs, hotel accommodations, etc.) to paying salaries. Instead they agreed to the typical guaranteed minimum salaries, which in cases where you're drawing 5,000 to a game result in nothing but guaranteed losses. They realized they were going to lose money in the beginning. They figured it'd take a generation to build the market. What they failed to do was really assess how deep that market would be once that generation had passed. We're over half-way there, and attendance has pretty much peaked. They've found their market - its just not nearly as deep as they thought it'd be. If Grand Rapids can support an AFL team I don't see why Knoxville couldn't support a WNBA team, especially given the history of women's ball at UT. Just make sure the team always has at least a couple Lady Vols on the roster.
slapshot
Which league had better average attendance, the ABL or WNBA? I thought the New England Blizzard of the ABL had pretty good numbers considering they split the season between Hartford (middle of UConn territory) and Springfield. From the few games I happened to see, I thought the ABL game was much better than the WNBA game. The ABL didn't seem "dumbed down" like the WNBA is. The ABL seemed to emphasize basketball, while the WNBA emphasized marketing. Sodboy13
The WNBA's Chicago Sky, not owned by the Bulls, play in the nearby UIC Pavilion, which seats about 6,000 and previously housed the ABL's Condors and the CBA's Rockers. And just like the teams before them, the Sky are hard-pressed to fill that bandbox. And I'm agreed with jpslapshot. The ABL, in all regards (including the league name,) was presenting itself as pro basketball being played by women. The WNBA has been about "Look! We made basketball so girls can play it now! Isn't that neat?" CS85
I have no problem with the idea of a women's league, but they couldn't possibly have expected the WNBA to succeed in any way, shape, or form. There is no product to sell, there's no entertainment value for televising it. There's no dunking, no flash, no sizzle. It's mostly unattractive women doing layups. Who honestly wants to watch that?Don't get me wrong, women's sports is great, I'm all for equality and such, but to think that the WNBA, or any other women-based sport with no sex-appeal would profit is ludicrous.
