i realize that college baseball is not usually talked about on this board, but i realized yesterday as i was walking past hawkins field here at vanderbilt, that vandy was wering all black uniforms, pants and all, against pitt. i cannot find photos yet, but this is something that i havent heard of since some of those 1970's ridiculous kits that some mlb teams had...if anyone has photos that would be great

heh, I recall until a few years ago, the River City Rascals (Frontier League, I think...aka the guys who use Spuds McKenzie as their logo) wore uniforms inspired by those from the 1900s and 1910s...the coup de grace was an alternate all-black uniform. cap was black, jersey was black with a white placket and RASCALS on front (the C was orange, as it was over the placket; the rest of it was white), and the pants were black. that was, perhaps, my favorite indy ball uniform...alas, they changed their colors and uniforms last year.

San Diego State also wears ALL black every now and then. Here is a link to their site. The pic is copyrighted, otherwise I would post it.

Thats just nasty (in a bad way)

I remember when I was playing Babe Ruth League ball....about a thousand years ago....the teams were all named after colleges. The Colorado Buffaloes team was clad in all black from head to toe and all we could say each year was that it must have sucked to play during the summer heat in those things. That memory just came to mind when looking at these Aztec monstrocities.

The New York Giants' manager John McGraw decided his team should wear all black one year to intimidate the other teams. It obviously worked as the Giants went on to win the World Series the year they switched to all black. Just thought I'd mention it.

Not quite. McGraw had all black jerseys made for the 1905 World Series when the Giants played the Philadelphia Athletics. They won, but the jerseys were not worn again. In 1911, when the Giants and A's met again in the Series, McGraw had a new batch of black jerseys made. The Giants lost this time and they never wore all black jerseys again. They did wear black shirts in the late 70's and again a few years ago after the team had moved to San Francisco.

Yep, this is exactly what I read in Frank De Ford's, The Old Ballgame. It was said at the time that Philly lost the series the minute they saw the Giants take the field in brand new uniforms (while Philly sported worn out unis, that made the A's and the AL look as minor league as John McGraw had said before the Series).

Now we all know why the Jays scrapped their original "dark-graphite" road uniforms for 2004.

I have one of their game worn road jerseys. Weird decision to combine a very old school jersey with a space age looking number font!

Baseball pants are white, or they are gray. Unless you are the Giants, then French Vanilla Creme Latte. But baseball pants should be no other color.

I agree, though I wish that the Giants would lose their dirty color and go with regular ol' white.

To me, baseball uniforms should have MATCHING jerseys and pants... preferably all white, all gray, or some other light neutral tone. If I were in charge of MLB, that's the first rule I'd put in. If you wanted to wear a black jersey, or navy jersey, or whatever, you could, but you'd have to wear matching black or navy pants. It might be damn ugly, but at least it would be a BASEBALL uniform, not a cheap-looking softball outfit. Hate it.

That photo of George Brett charging out of the dugout in those powder blue uniforms is a huge reason why the Royals should go back to the powder blues -- the tradition behind them.

Besides, with the Royals, they always looked great.
