fiasco!
More shameless self-promotion. Pete Rose's biggest problem isn't that he gambled on baseball, it's that he's a :censored:ing idiot. Case closed.Major League Baseball's Hit King also said he thinks that Mark McGwire is getting a raw deal from the writers voting for the Hall of Fame. The reason he said he supported McGwire is because nothing has been proven and they're all "allegations."Hmm, Pete? Wasn't your gambling problem merely "allegations" for about 14 years? slapshot
Pete Rose is a dumbass. List his accomplishments and records in the HOF, but keep him out.He is just a very delusional person who still can never truly figure out what he did wrong. Wasn't your gambling problem merely "allegations" for about 14 years?Probably shouldn't get into this, but Rose's gambling problems were allegations backed up by an intensive investigation with a lot of evidence.Rose's situation is more comparable to Bonds, where there is a ton of evidence and a firm denial (though no official allegations).Until someone takes the few pieces of evidence there is against McGwire, tries to confirm them and back them up with a lot more evidence through an intesive investigation (and is successful--which obviously may or may not be possible), the claims against McGwire will remain allegations.Oh, and by the way, the actual "news" of this is that he said he bet on the Reds every game. He had already admitted to betting on the Reds.
speedy
I think keeping him, or anyone out of the hall of fame is ridiculous. You're trying to tell me Ty Cobb was a fantastic human being? Please. Love him or hate him, I personally hate him, you can't deny what he did as a ballplayer and that fact alone should put him in the hall. I don't care what the hell he did after his playing days were over, that shouldn't be a qualification to get in. Yeah he :censored:ed up, sure he doesn't know it, but I think it's totally hypocritical to put a dirty, angry, low life piece of crap such as Cobb, and then leave out another dirty, angry, low life piece of crap with better stats like Rose. He may not be the best human being, but he played the game with the heart, intensity, and desire to win that no one before him ever did. Oh yeah, and for christ sake put Roger Maris and Jim Rice in the hall, jesus.Just my 2 cents.
Snazel
Hall of Fames are very political constructs. The hockey hall of fame, for example, has a distinct Ontario bias to it in my opinion.Pete Rose fought with and struggled against the establishment of major league baseball. He also had fights with the union. If you've ever dealt with MLB, you know that organization has no sense of humor, and has an extremely authoritarian air about them. The MLB Union, is arguably one of the most fascist organizations in all of sports. This is Pete's real crime, he butted head against organizations that do not tolerate dissidence. You mix that with the politics surrounding hall of fame selection, and you get Pete Rose's current state of affairs.

yh
Unbelievable. Outrageous even. Pete Rose should be banned from baseball. Hopefully Commissioner Giamatti will do so with all deliberate haste.
BaltimoreFan
I still don't understand why this is such a big deal. Didn't he bet on his team to win? Its not like he threw games to make a profit. I have lost alot of respect for Rose, with all this crap he's been doing lately. But I still think he belongs in the hall. If they want to keep the lifetime ban, at least restrict it to a lifetime. In otherwords put in Rose when he dies, like they should do with Shoeless Joe.

Oh yeah, and for christ sake put Roger Maris and Jim Rice in the hall, jesus.Just my 2 cents. But it's not about being a good human being. It's about putting the legitimacy of the game in question. He has admitted to betting on his own team, that in itself puts the legitimacy on all the Reds games he managed into question. I have said this before but even betting for you team to win changes the game. Maybe he pushes a reliever that should get a rest more because he has money on it, which effects the rest of the season. What about the games he didn't bet on? I know he said he bet on every Reds games but that's a lot of Reds games and I find it hard to believe there wasn't a few in there he didn't bet on. Maybe on those games he doesn't bet he holds off using players because he needs them for a game he does bet on. Betting for or against you team is wrong no matter what. He should not go into the Hall of Fame. What he did is far worse than what any of the steroid players did.

His playing career was merely longer. They both played 24 seasons.......Ty Cobb debuted on August 30, 1905 and played his last game on September 11, 1928.Pete Rose debuted on April 8, 1963 and played his last game on August 17, 1986.Of course, he did play 527 more games than Cobb but their playing careers were exactly the same length. Not only was your point wrong, but I also think it's a bit ridiculous. Does what you're going by also mean Hank Aarons homeruns aren't as good as Babe Ruth's because Aaron played 795 more games? The longevity of a player who can consitantly perform only further solidifies their ability.Look, I'm not trying to compare the two, because that's nearly impossible based on the era's they played in. You can argue about him all you want, but he's the all-time hits leader and should be in the hall. Go ahead and write on his plaque he's a cheating bastard, do whatever, but he's part of baseball history and the Hall of Fame to me isn't truely a Hall of Fame if you're going to keep out some of the best players of their time. In otherwords put in Rose when he dies, like they should do with Shoeless Joe.He bet on his team to win, on selected days, not "all the time" as he claimed on ESPN. It is assumed that he didn't bet on the Reds on days that Bill Gullickson and Mario Soto were starting, as he didn't have a lot of confidence in them, therefore, he would have manipulated his BP and rosters on the other days to give himself a better chance of winning the game.Either way, the man's a liar and a scumbag, and his life has been reduced to that of a professional huckster. Keep him out.

gueman
As a gambler he is a F-ing moron for betting on every game if he did that. I think he only bet on games he thought were a lock. So those games he didn't bet on are suspect. To me baseball it a terrible bet a sucker bet. I have never met anyone who has had success betting on baseball, short term or long term. puckhead42
The one thing that people forget......Rose SHOULD be in the Hall as a PLAYER..........He would have no chance to be in as a MANAGER.........sure he bet on baseball as a manager......yes that is WRONG....BUT his stats as a PLAYER speak for themselves.....that is my opinion....right or wrong
NJTank
Rose should be in the Hall 4256 hits enough said. His punishment should be he cant work for another team having an effect on personnel decision, though if he wanted to be an announcer or some figure head that will be allowed.
