From the MLS website:

The Los Angeles Galaxy and midfielder Cobi Jones will make a major announcement at a press conference Monday at 10:30 a.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. Jones will be joined by Galaxy head coach Frank Yallop, team President and GM Alexi Lalas and AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke.

Could be new branding? Cobi has been there from the start.....

Key wording: The Los Angeles Galaxy and midfielder Cobi Jones will make a major announcement

Lets wait, speculate and see.

New branding would make sense. With what Becks coming to America. Jones has been there since the first year, so maybe its a sort of "New to Old" thing. Maybe an appearance by the new Brit? We'll see.

Aww... I thought it was referring Platini's announcement giving the Galaxy (the world's 3rd biggest club, as per Alexi Lalas) an everlasting bye into the Round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League... or at least an announcement regarding Landycakes signing a contract with Walton Casuals, a team where his skills could really be shown... <_<

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Cobi has always been my favorite soccer player... It'll be sad to see him go if he does...

Indeed...the last remaining player in MLS from the '94 USA squad, IIRC. Cobi Jones was a fantastic player, even by this Revolution fan's standards :D

btw, didn't he once host a show on MTV about medicines/alternative treatments back in the mid to late-90s? I forget what the name of the show was...

To what extent it is true, I have absolutely no idea, but on BigSoccer there was mention that the Galaxy would introduce their new colors and jerseys once Beckham arrives. So essentially, they would play half their season in their yellow togs, and then half way through the season become the Los Angeles Beckhams.

Haven't heard that, and would tend to doubt it.

First of all, it doesn't make much sense from a marketing standpoint to lose the first half of the season in merchandise sales.

Second, I don't think the Galaxy will ever make a statement implying that Beckham is the sole driving force behind the team. In their minds, he's becoming part of the LA Galaxy, not the other way around.

That would seal the deal for LA being a joke. Seriously, I can't see that happening.

Well, seeing as how Alexi Lalas already announced that the identity change would occur before the season, it's pretty much narrowed down as to what this announcement would be.

Watch them use the Adidas David Beckham Predator shirt as the template for the new Galaxy shirt -_- . It has a diagonal stripe just like their current kits

I like that shirt, and it makes sense, but I read somewhere on this board that all MLS teams have to wear one of the current MLS templates. lame. im hoping with the next expansion they'll open it up to all suppliers.

CARSON, California (AP) -- The Los Angeles Galaxy are no more. The Major League Soccer franchise announced today that henceforth the team will be known as the "Los Angeles Constellation of Carson," joining the trend of professional sports teams located outside the Los Angeles market utilizing its name but identifying itself with a suburb.

"A Galaxy is hard to comprehend, but we see Constellations every night in the sky, except when there's smog," said midfielder Cobi Jones, who will be attending a press conference today to model the team's new black, silver and white uniform sets. The team will introduce the sets on the field in their April 8 opener against the Houston Dynamo, a team that also has undergone a name change.

The Constellation, which under the Galaxy name won two MLS cups, hopes to distinguish itself in the world soccer market with the name change. Constellation is a name never before used by any professional sports franchise. "It's unique and original," said a spokesperson for AEG, owners of the team, "hopefully it will distinguish our brand on a global scale."

Gotcha, didn't I? :D(bow)

Dear God I hope not. That's an ugly shirt. I also hope they get rid of the current diagonal stripe. I'd like to see them do something similar to DC United, who have some of the classiest jerseys in all of sports. Of course, doing anything that classy with Green and Gold is difficult. Oh well.

I hope they don't change their jerseys mid-season. That would just be rediculous.

Nope.

This was the dead giveaway:

the trend of professional sports teams located outside the Los Angeles market utilizing its name but identifying itself with a suburb

If I had considered it to be true even for a moment, that would have made it clear that it was a put-on.

Nice try, though. :P

Nah. There was an article in The Onion that intimated as such once upon a time...

Oh yeah thats exactly what they need to do. Copy another teams design. What next? Should they switch their colors to some form of Blue and Red?
