Pirates in Ketchup Red

...and the Phillies, despite wore their set only ONCE (and it was NOT red, but considerably darker) and nearly everyone I know who remembers that time (I was but a tike, so I don't recall) laughs at how silly they looked.

No doubt posted a thousand times. The size of the names always amazed me, you could read CARLTON from the Jersey Shore.

Probably so that the people at the old Vet could read them from waaaaaaaay up in the cheap seats. That place was truly cavernous.

And there's your answer, Andy. The Phils wore this atrocity once to the best of my knowledge. Evidently, LC pitched that night for the Phils - so if anyone should be associated with the maroon jersey, it'd be him. Which is why he's given the go-ahead to rock it at the tribute days.

But yeah... that's icky. Bad jersey, worse pants - I'm sure they were given back to their rightful wearers, the bellhops at every 3rd-rate hotel in the country. Make this go away.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

Wow, I can't believe this thread got to five pages. Those jerseys aren't the best in the league or anything, but I really don't think they're all that bad. They probably look good by themselves (like on a fan in the stands, rather than on a player wearing the contrasing pants and hat).

Oh I wasn't doubting their existance - I knew that they were the "Sat. Night Special" uniforms and that they did wear them once. I'm doubting their appearance at tribute days. I've never seen one of those jerseys at any Phillies sanctioned event. The most recent one I was at was the Vet closing ceremonies, and I don't recall if LC was there, but I'm fairly certain I'd remember seeing that jersey. All I'm saying is that in the past 21 years, I don't think that jersey has been worn by anyone on the field as part of a tribute or otherwise.

Those things don't even look good hanging on the racks in the Hometowne Sports pro shop over by where I stay at!

I can't think of ONE person who has bought one yet (even if they are replicas)...

I'll be damned if I'm going back 5 pages to check on this, but has anyone mentioned that the red vests look kind of like a Discrimihater concept brought to awful, awful life?

If not, then yay me.

The Pirates had good-looking sleeved jerseys as recently as 2000. I understand the desire for a look tied to history, but the Pirates' vests looked bad in the '50s and '60s, too. At least back then, they didn't occasionally look like a bunch of ketchup stains running around on the field.

Must respectfully disagree. The vests looked great then, and look great today.

A sharp look. Timeless. I don't think many teams can pull off the sleeveless look, but with their classic, bold color scheme the Pirates are among them.

The vest is part of Pirates history, and if it there's one team in the bigs that should wear them, it would be the Bucs. I still don't like them and I'd rather see the sleeved tops, but I understand why they do it. A small part of me likes the team's (and your) appreciation of its history. But the red vest is awful.

Maybe they wanted to, I don't know, sell more product?

A black alternate with yellow script and (maybe) white outlines would have accomplished the same result without pissing all over the team's identity.

For instance:

No, that is still a flaming pile of crap because it is a vest. Vests should only be white or gray, not dark colors and certainly not with lighter sleeves than the vest.

Give your creation sleeves and it is great.

It seems like the Colorado Rockies began this tren with there hideous black vest alternates. i betcha several more teams will follow.

  • 2 weeks later...

What was (I guess) to be Friday night home games, now has spread to random night home games. They broke out the hat that goes with this set now too. I can't see if the P is outlined in red like previous versions...oh well, they got killed when they wore them once and now there are tornadoes in the area tonight. Maybe Mother Nature is po'd too.

Edit: seeing them close up, the P is just yellow with no outlines like the older version and even the yellow billed version. I received a cheap fashion hat a few years ago as a gift. It was a black Pirate hat with a red brim and just a yellow P with no outline. Now I guess it's correct....ugly as heck, but correct.

LOL!

Watching SportsCenter last night, I was struck by how bad the Pirates alternate jerseys really are.

Not only are the ugly as sin, they're damn near illegible. Watching on a 27-inch screen (I know, I'm a Luddite), digital cable, and I couldn't read the number on the pitcher's back. That's bad.

Then again, given how poorly they seem to play in them, I hope the Pirates wear them for every game from now until the All-Star Break. :D

the rest of their package is decent, but would be much more attractive if they went back to the Clemente-era block numbers.

I tend to agree - I'm not a huge fan of custom number fonts matching every other element, but at least the Pirates are consistent (jersey script matches cap logo matches number font), unlike other teams that have custom number fonts.

So while I'd prefer the block numbers, since that's the only gripe I have against the current set I think they've done pretty well.

I still like the jersey, and I still dislike their number font.

However, there are any number of posters from the "Yankees Jacket" thread who will gladly tell you--at length--that I am a complete imbecile, so what do I know?

wow than you must just be very blind. They are not the best looking things in the world but not the worst either. I personally hate the yankees uniforms but that is just my personal opinion

for all those that hate these unis... including myself... were talking about a team that once wore these:

1979.jpg

...and originated the pullover/belt-less look

Not to say that is a pretty uniform in that pic, but it has 2 things going for it that the current alt doesn't

1. The time period that outfit was worn (I think the whole world was flashy and/or on drugs)

2. At least black/yellow is the Pirates' colors.

We're talking RED and a COLORED VEST here...keep that in mind. Although they play like a beer league softball team, they don't have to dress like one...especially with what they have hanging in the closet and what they could be wearing.
