HBO Dumps Larry Merchant

Mac the Knife

Recommended Posts

Reports are circulating that HBO will not be renewing the contract of boxing commentator Larry Merchant, replacing him with Max Kellerman.

FINALLY! Merchant, like Joe Theismann on MNF, is a gas bag who should've never been put on the air in the first place. One nugget of insight lost in a plethora of platitudes, to use the type of phrase Merchant used to wax rhapsodic on HBO telecasts.

That's a shame. I found it to be a hilarious, ribald show featuring the behind-the-scenes machinations of a late-night talk show.

I hope Garry Shandling lands on his feet soon, perhaps even in a movie with Warren Beatty.

Max Kellerman? Still alive? If he is, I have one more question... Why?

I'm sure you were trying to be funny, but here's why this isn't funny, in my humble opinion.

From Wikipedia:

"On October 17, 2004, the body of Max's brother Sam was found near a hammer in his Hollywood apartment. As a result of the ensuing investigation, former boxer James Butler was arrested and charged with Sam's murder. He later confessed to the murder and was given a 29 year sentence."

You win some, you lose some. I stand by what I said, this guy is a cancer on TV and I personally can't stand his voice, his opinions, or his mannerisms. I feel infinitly dumber everytime I listen to one of his incoherent ramblings. That may sound harsh, and to some extent, it is. But I just don't like him. Nothing on a personal level.

Sam died? I didn't know that. I remember seeing him on ESPNEWS from time to time.

Off-topic but that first sentence is poorly written. Unless, of course, the hammer was already there and then the body was placed next to it. Otherwise, I'm guessing that a hammer was found near the body.

A brief synopsis of the opinions of Max Kellerman:

1. Anything from New York is vastly superior to anything from anywhere else. Since I am from New York, obviously, this applies to me.

2. Boxing is the greatest sport ever conceived. If you attempt to say otherwise, you are a complete and utter fool.

That about covers it.

Sam Kellerman was used as the murder weapon to kill the hammer, obviously.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Yup.

As bad as Around the Horn is now, it was probably ten times worse when he was the host.

Don't get me started on I, Max.

In respect to #2, any young boxer with a high KO ratio, "is an overrated offensive fighter!".
