Anyone else think the 07 MLB 5950s sit too high on your head?

Size EIGHT? I didn't know Kevin Mench and Barry Bonds posted here.

Yeah, size 8 is the over-sized ones the hip-hop and rappers wear. Can that be said anymore after the Imus firing though?

Sure, it can still be said. In fact, you're free to say more asinine things if you feel so inclined - be our guest! Although factually, I don't think I've ever seen a "hip-hop" wear anything, except a 76ers uniform and big black sunglasses. And thanks for enriching this conversation with your "wit".

Now, so as not to be hypocritical - I don't have any of the '07 59Fiftys. Is there any way to break them in like the old all-wool models? I've ripped the backing out of the front panels on almost all my 59Fiftys and soaked them enough to where they molded to my head pretty nicely. I've heard it can't be done with the new models, which would suck, because the high crown looks so dopey.

But size 8... I'll just be over here with my 7 3/8 and be glad my neck doesn't have to hold up anything bigger than that. :P

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

I'm in the process of removing the crown from my new Brewers cap - I'll let you know how it goes.

5950's always sit too high unless you break them in. What you need to do is carefully take out the white and black stitching on the inside front of the cap. This is what make it stiff in front. Then you should get the hat soaking wet and ring it out. Let it dry on your head (use blow dryer if you have one), and the hat should shrink perfectly to your head. The new polyester 5950's don't shrink as much as the old wool ones but it still works.

No, accually if I recall correctly...

Bonds: 7 5/8

Mench: 8 1/4

Mench has to have his hats and his batting helmets specially made. Bonds' head isnt nearly as big as you'd think.

And I dont notice the hats to sit any higher than the old ones. They're just like the old ones. They have inconsistancies and some sit higher than others. Thats just the way it goes.........

Ripping everything out and soaking doesn't do squat to the new 5950's like the old hats. If you want the low crown then buy the low crown version of the hat. At neweracap.com they have ATL, BOS, CHC, CWS, DET, HOU, LAD, NYY, PHI, SD, SF, STL and WSH. I got the NYY one and it looks and fits just like it has already been broken in.

Actually, I found the sizing on the 2007 New Eras to be a bit weird.

I normally am a size 8 on the old hats. Of course, you take into account the shrinkage factor.

I bought the 2007 Blue Jays Alternate cap last week and the one that fit me was a size 7 3/4. Since they're not wool there's no shrinkage factor anymore.

That's nice and all, but a quarter inch?

As far as the logo is concerned, I agree with bucfan, they're all pretty much the same, except for the black underbills (which I love).

the problem with the old versions is that they shrink really fast, so you need to buy it a bit big, and they can vary in size, even if say you want a 7 1/4, 2 7 1/4's can fit differently. ive found with the new 5950's that they are alot more standard fitting than the old ones. i love my new Nats authentics.

I had a Tigers fitted from a few years ago 7 1/4 and it fits like a dream! So when I ordered my new Blue Jays one from River City Sports I ordered 7 1/4 and I can spin the thing around on my head with no resistance at all. I always make sure I try any New Era hats on now. The size variance is ridiculous!

FWIW, newera.com is the only place you can buy the low profiles.

I've been to half a dozen places around town, and nobody's carrying them. Even the New Era flagship store in NoHo doesn't have them, and according to the clerk there, won't be carrying them.

Well, as someone who has recently removed the crown from both a 2006 and 2007 59fifty, I can say that they're both partly right.

Removing the crown does change the shape. It does not, however, change the amount of fabric, which is stiff enough to hold most of the old shape.

The new polyester does change its shape somewhat with wearing, though. We'll see what my new 2007 Brewers alt without the crown looks like in a month or two.

i wear 7 7/8, with a shaved head... and i'm a white dude...

i just have a big old scottish noggin.

7 3/4, German/Scot.

As soon as I find my size in the Vancouver-Seattle corridor, I'll let someone know how they fit. At this point, I'll wear any :censored:ing team except the Yankees or the Jays, I just want a fitted hat in my size, dammit.

If it helps at all: I know that when one looks in the mirror with the new cap on, one feels really really stupid. However, generally other people don't seem to really notice (several people actually complimented my cap). And when I see people wearing 5950s around town, I can't tell whether it's a new one or an old more and more comfortable. Give it a second chance - they really grow on you!

Before I read this, I swore I was the world's only recipient of a "bad hat-wearer" gene. I wonder how many other people have this problem?

I've heard of this being done, but never actually seen the results. Is it a drastic difference, or does it look like how it did before with a slightly lower crown? I ask bcause right now I have the stretch-fit and I think it looks too small on my head (and would prefer an authentic 59/50 in general),

And do you need any specific tools to do this (like a specific knife or something)?

Buc i think you're wrong. i am pretty sure bonds is a 7 3/8(i am fairly certain) but when he came into the league they say he was a 7 1/4. but thats what is claimed anyways

You could be, and most likely are right. While 7 5/8 is definately a signifigant difference from a 7 3/8, it is easy to mix the two up :P

Although I will strangle anyone who tries to link the bump up in Bond's head size to steriod use. The hat has changed in style, numbering, and quality of material plenty of times since Bonds' first game to where a bump up has ZERO signifigance.

Yeah - myself, I wore a 7 1/2 New Era Authentic in the 1980s, and now I wear a... 7 5/8. :D

Nope, all you need is a sharp pair of scissors (I also use fingernail scissors for the detail work) and your teeth. These are the instructions I use.

The 2007 caps have more glue inside the crown than previous years - that's also helping it keep its shape somewhat. I'll scrape it off and see.

Like what Goth said, you don't really need specific tools. Tweezers have always worked for me; if you can find a set of needle-nose tweezers, they're about the best things I've found to use. (I ruined my wife's cuticle tweezers, or so she says ). The white threads can be removed by hand once you get rid of the gray wiry threads that run vertically; they're what's keeping the crown up. Make sure you get all the gray fibers, even the ones that run under the black ribbing between the panels. Once you get a few of the gray wires out, you can usually slip a finger between the wires and the cloth of the hat and open up the area by separating the wires from the adhesive. It takes a good hour to do thoroughly, but it makes a difference. Take the hat in the shower, soak it with hot water on your head, and wear it out on a hot, sunny day until it's dry. It'll mold to your head and shrink up (the new ones much less, apparently).

This coming from the guy that says screw you to Ray Nagin. You need an asshat to cover the plate in your head, you effing tool!

If you don't know the difference between the mayor of New Orleans coming to Philadelphia under the guise of finding assistance to rebuild his beleaguered city, then trashing his hosts in front of the cameras upon his return home, and being an ignorant jackass who posts irrelevant and unfunny commentary in the thread, you might want think about a GED correspondence course. Apparently, you missed the 12 years of basic schooling so many of us put to good use daily. But you're right, you're not the ass for posting both your original "witticism", then this intelligent, constructive reply... the rock you crawled out from under misses you. Go home.
