California Pro Sports Nicknames

^ That has to be the stupidest set of nicknames ive ever seen ^ I mean seriously, Moneyballers? Gangstas? I really hope that was just a sad attempt at a joke.

And no, as a native Californian I dont feel screwed. I feel that its a good example of California as a whole. California is a cultural melting pot and many people came here from many different areas. I think that the nickname deal is a good example of this. It shows that teams have had history in other places, but have come to come to California and been welcomed with open arms.

dude, i prefaced it as a joke... all based on the city's makeup (sacramento is rural, oakland has a decently high crime rate) and the existing nickname (dodgers was originally based on dodging trolley cars, which is OBVIOUSLY not applicable to anything in los angeles). maybe you've never gone to downtown oakland or read 'moneyball' (google it). i hope you're kidding about being from 'The Reno'; maybe i just don't understand your humor either. not trying to start a 'flame war,' but just had to speak my peace.

Dude, I was BORN in Oakland (Moneyball is my bible). Grew up in South Lake Tahoe. Sacramento will be my home as of August. Orange County was my home six months ago. Yes I "live" in Reno (as in I stay in Reno three nights a week) right now for school, but im California born and raised my friend. And seriously, stereotypes placed on cities annoy me almost as much as stereotypes placed on people.

And it was still a lame attempt at a joke.

What does that leave you with?

Raiders? - Fair enough...

Kings? - Never understood what they are Kings of exactly, the railroads?

SJ Sharks? - This works, however it would have worked better if San Jose was actually on the coast.

49ers? - Best name in the state, it screams California.

Chargers? - Never really got it.

Clippers? - Never really got it.

Angels? - Not exactly creative considering, and god knows they can't continue to be called the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Although It would be interesting of they had a hat with LAAA on it.

Here's who needs original nicknames:

LA Dodgers - Can't change it.

SF Giants - Can't change it.

Oakland A's - Can't change it.

LA Lakers - Can't change it.

Sacramento Kings - Could change it to something related to Sacramento history.

Golden State Warriors - Could change it to something related to the "Golden State", rather than an obscure reference to some participants in a war.

Ducks - Change it to anything else, ANYTHING. More than any other team in North America they need a new identity and a complete break from everything originally associated with the 4 year olds who originally named and branded the team (Di$ney). The word "ducks" doesn't say jack about hockey, southern California or Anaheim. The problem is, when they win the Stanley Cup in about 3 weeks, they'll never change the name. It will be set in silver.

The Kings nickname was changed when they moved from Cincinnati, where they were named the Royals. Since, KC already had the Royals, they decided to keep with the theme of KC Monarchs, Royals, and became the Kings.

The Chargers are so named because the original owner was also the CEO/Owner of Diners Club or Carte Blanche credit card and wanted to draw attention to it.

The Angels was taken from the PCL team as was the Padres.

The Clippers was derived from sailing community, which was in the original logo, and is a large part of the San Diego community.

If the Sharks identified with San Francisco or Sacramento instead of San Jose, they could have called themselves the Goal Rush (a play on "Gold Rush", obviously).

For the fun of it, and for argument sake, I'll rate the California pro nicknames, from best to worst:

1, San Francisco 49ers. As was said earler, this screams California. As good a nickname as there is in pro sports, period.

2, San Jose Sharks. Good, powerful name for any team near the ocean (although San Jose is closer to the bay).

3, Los Angeles Angels. Los Angeles is, after all, the city of angels, and there was a minor league team also called the L.A. Angels.

4, Los Angeles Clippers. Nowhere near as good as Sharks, but still a decent oceanic nickname.

5, (tie) Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Kings, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Raiders. All good, strong, generic nicknames.

9, Golden State Warriors. Good, strong, generic nickname. Gets a slightly lower mark because that darn P.C. crowd is bound to make a fuss. Or the NCAA will call it hostile and abusive. Hmmm. Maybe I should rate this No. 3.

10, San Diego Chargers. Named for the "Charge!" sound made at USC games, but has taken on a decent lightning bolt image. The bolts aren't exactly Californian in nature, but they ain't bad.

11, Los Angeles Lakers. Not at the bottom because there actually are some lakes in California. But those lakes don't make up the most renowned coastline in the Golden State.

12, Anaheim Ducks. No longer the Mighty Ducks, which is more Californian than just Ducks. Well, there are ducks in California. Maybe they're on those lakes. A more appropriate nickname for any team in California would be Loons, if you know what I mean.

13, Oakland Athletics. Named for the Athletic Club in Philadelphia. Not at the bottom because baseball players are (usually) athletic and because you can easily call them the A's, for whatever that's worth.

14, Los Angeles Dodgers. Deservedly in last place. Dodgers has absolutely no relation to California, unless you're talking about dodging traffic on the freeways. Which would make for a good logo.

Okay, after looking at it, I have done a little thinking.

The problem with Los Angeles is that there really aren't a whole lot of appropriate nicknames for potential teams. When you think of LA, you think of the movie industry, so "Stars" would be appropriate. And of course, "Angels" because LA is the City of Angels. But there really isn't anything that you can use that isn't politically incorrect like "Gangs" or something like that.

As for the Bay Area, most of the names are perfect. I always thought "Oaks" would be a good nickname for Oakland (even if there aren't any oak trees in Oakland). And anything related to the Bay or the Gold Rush is perfect for that area.

Also, I've always thought there should be a team called the Sacramento Capitols (or Capitals), since Sactown is the CAPITAL of Cali, and thus the CAPITOL is there.

Just my relatively unbiased opinion.

I know both UCLA and Cal use a bear motif, but I'm a little surprised that no California team picked up on the name Grizzlies when it was available (i.e., before it was used by Vancouver/Memphis in the NBA and Denver/Utah in hockey). I think Fresno made a good choice, but it would have been nice to see the name at a major league level.

Especially since the California state flag has a bear on it...

I'm surprised that "Preppies Rule" thread hasn't been overrun yet. Maybe it's just so obviously true that no one feels compelled to post.
