"THE" Ricky Williams Fails April Drug Test

So why does the league get its panties in such a wad over a nickel bag?

I sound like a Broken Record (tee-hee)... because it's illegal

If Peyton Manning got caught cheating on his wife, would the league suspend him? That's a misdemeanor just like smoking marijuana is.

Even too much caffeine can be a problem. I have to limit myself to two caffeine drinks a day because too much caffeine can cause heart palpatations. It's not a serious problem, but it is a problem that, if left unchecked, could lead to bigger problems.

But back to the pot: Ricky Williams is clearly addicted to marijuana. He's letting it rule his life. It's been said that smoking marijuana on a regular basis is much more harmful on the lungs than smoking cigarettes. I fear Ricky is going to end up as another potentially great athlete who wasted his career because of a drug addiction.

If anything, adultery is regulated by the individual states. Marijuana is federal, and the individual states can set up any additional consequences.

Adultery, at most, are misdemeanors. Marijuana consequences are misdemeanors and/or felonies, depending on what you're being charged with.

For clarification's sake, and it's a small distinction but a distinction all the same: One doesn't become addicted to marijuana, they become dependent on it. That is to say that your body doesn't need marijuana like an alcoholic or a drug user. Instead, your mind convinces you that marijuana is necessary to function. Do you see the difference? If you're an alcoholic and you give up drinking cold turkey, your body will go through withdrawal. If you smoke weed every day for a year and then one day give it up, your body will be fine, but your mind won't. It's a slight distinction, but an important distinction all the same.

And right, I overlooked the cancer aspect. Bad on me.

I believe most felony charges related to marijuana involve growing and/or selling large amounts, but I don't want to get boggled down in that. I'm just sayin that as far as the NFL is concerned, the level of punishment seems disproportionate with the crime.

And yeah, Ricky Williams is making terrible decisions (like he has since the day he was drafted). By my account, he's probably $50MM poorer than he should be. I'm not saying he shouldn't follow the rule, but I absolutely do believe the rule should be changed.

Accually, its not the redistribution aspect that is the sole proprietor of the offense. While it does carry heavy fines and/or jail time, just simple possession is often times what people get busted for.

Is caffeine addictive?

Just sayin...

That's a fair response, but it fails to address the lung, brain, and short term impairment effects.

Again, I won't argue that it definitely should be illegal. But it's certainly not harmless.

10:4. I'm just pointing out that we have legal substances which are more addictive, more dangerous and more damaging than weed. We also have laws that are prosecuted at the same level as marijuana usage that don't warrant any type of punishment whatsoever from the NFL. So why does the league get its panties in such a wad over a nickel bag?

Agreed. But it does come down to the law, which is ridiculous. I am not too familiar with the laws in US, but I am pretty sure they are much more stringent than here in Canada. I have seen and read interviews with Williams and he is a very intelligent forward thinking man, and just because he enjoys a little smoke, he is prohibited from making a living doing what he loves and is VERY good at. It's too bad

Too bad he gets held to the same standards as regular people?

There are many people who smoke and hold highly sought after careers, and have no fear of losing their jobs. I have met quite a few "Upstanding" citizens that many people in their respective communities hold in high regard and I know them to partake in recreational use of wacky tabbacy. Many people may not agree with that but it's been my experience and to each their own. I just feel that it is wrong to discriminate against those who use pot vs. those who say... Drink? I just don't see the rational there, other than a government a long time ago decided that one was not acceptable and one was.

In short, it's psychologically addictive, but not physically.

(and to digress a bit, caffeine is MUCH more addictive and I actually think we have a far to cavalier attitude about that particular drug)

In fairness, adultery is illegal in most states (because whenever they try to take it off the books, religious groups freak out), but it is not enforced. Marijuana is enforced.

Taht said it's a bad rule. Then again, I (an illegal drug virgin, mind you) think all drugs should be legal.

Chris, I don't think that's what everyone you keep "correcting" are saying. They are saying the standards themselves are bad, not that Ricky should get off scot-free while others are punished.

...you'd think a guy with a John Lennon avatar would be more understanding. :D
