WOAH! They wore That!?

I am surprised no one has mentioned Warren Sapp yet.

Considering Sapp spent nine seasons in a Bucs uniform (including a Super Bowl), I don't really think he makes the list.

Were he to retire today, it's more likely that a picture of him in a Raider uniform would make the list.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

There should be another section... Players who had a different uniform in their rookie (or first couple of) season(s), but the team completely revamped, and they are known for the revamped uni. The best I can think of off the top of my head is Kirby Puckett... obviously known for what they currently wear (sans alts), but he played a couple of seasons with the old pullovers.

Kenny Lofton in Houston and in old Indians jersey:

I don't think I've ever seen Kenny Lofton bare arms before, and this was after attending numerous games during his years in Cleveland before he started his vagabond existence. His antithesis was Carlos Baerga, who I recall wearing long-sleeves only once.

I think the point was that he is best identified in the pewter / red set, as many have forgotten or never even saw him in the creamsicle set.

Not exactly Lukas's point, though....

Agreed in that Lukas did not take the approach that was introduced early in the thread of finding players who are more closely associated with one style of a team's uniform, but actually happened to be around for previous iterations of a team's look.

Deion as a football rookie, Iverson as a basketball rookie, the Big Hurt in the cursive "C" White Sox hat, and Sapp as a creamsicle Buc ... all fall outside Lukas' premise, but fit the alternative definition.

People just happen to be responding to both the Lukas definition as well in this thread, potentially causing confusion.

Two more using the alternate interpretation of the title of the thread ...

An alternative take on this thread would be:

A player who joined a different team in the waning months/years of his career, and wore a different number than the one he was most famous in.

ie.

Bobby Hull as #16 with Hartford Whalers (instead of 9)

Joe Montana as # 19 with Chiefs (instead of 16)

Brett Hull as #19 with Dallas Stars (instead of 16)

We could call this the "here's a player that classier than Jerry Rice" thread......I'm still mad about his lack of respect or appreciation for what Largent's 80 meant to Seattle...

* When the Lakers signed Karl Malone, the jersey he held up at the press conrference had his usual no. 32, which of course has been retired by the Lakers for Magic Johnson. But, Malone wore no. 11 when the season started.

* Barry Bonds has been with the Giants for so long that we sometimes forget that he was very identified with no. 24 with Pittsburgh. So much so that, when he came to the Giants, he reportedly sought permission to wear the number from Willie Mays, for whom it is retired. But, Bonds ultimately decided to wear the no. 25 that his father Barry had worn.

REVERSE CASE -- veteran player changing his number so that an incoming player would not have to switch to a new one:

* John Franco gave up his longime no. 31 for no. 45 when Mike Piazza joined the Mets.

I think the one that suprises me the most is the use of the creamsicle pants

it's a pretty weak point since everyone knows it's still Tampa Bay and anyone with a basic playing history of Sapp will know he did wear the outfit at one point in time.

And given the various reasons to play in alts and throwbacks, it wouldn't be that much of stretch to say it happened at least once or so in the pewter times too.

Also, at this point, any pro athlete spotted in their college attire should be on the "They Wore That?" list since the majority of them leave school early. :P

I didn't read the Lukas article, so I apologize in advance if this was already mentioned.
