Odd jersey choices

went to a yankee game and saw names on authentic jerseys (in the stands, naturally).

For a team that prides itself on its image it amazes me that these would even be an option. As I waded through the stands in my authentic 1938, #4, home white pinstripe jersey, I heard a kid behind me ask his dad why I didn't have a name on it and who it was. The father painfully answered that I probably didn't have enough money to get the name stiched on and couldn't come up with the only yankee to ever wear #4!!

Unfortunately idiot fans abound at all ballparks.

Before the yankee haters chime in, please understand that growing up a yankee fan retired number memorization is usually a rite of young passage.

Getting back to the point of the thread, I believe ANY name on a yankee jersey, authentic or replica, home or away, looks incredibly foolish.

(As a non-Yankee fan, I am not sure who all the numbers are, but the process of elimination tells me that #4 must be Gehrig).

I can't stand seeing Yankee jerseys with names on the back. Same with others that should not (i.e. Red Sox home jersey). Maybe this kid's father should have just looked down onto the field to see that they don't have names on the jersey.

But yeah, most yankee replicas have the names. I guess that's a lesson that most people just don't pay as much attention as we do.

This isn't a weird choice on the part of the buyer, but has anyone ever noticed when Nike or Adidas pick the wrong player number when they make their annual college football/basketball replicas? I know sometimes choosing a star or two from a team can be a crapshoot, but how much research do they really do?

For example, back in 2001, Nike made BYU replica jersey of in the number of the guy who ended up being the third string QB. Then, in 2002, they picked the number of the guy that was going to start, but the guy changed numbers in the offseason. In 2004, they made replicas of an all-conference safety (Aaron Francisco #33), and instead of coming up with an offensive player, they made a #00 (the mascot's number!). At least they were right on this year making the BYU replicas in #12 for John Beck and #35 for Cameron Jensen, the defensive captain.

Sometimes I wonder if the do much research when the pick the numbers of the NCAA jerseys or if they directly ask the equipment manager for an inside scoop. Anyone know?

I saw a story about this once regarding Iowa. It was the year Brad Banks almost won the heisman. They picked a couple of numbers and not his. By mid year, they rushed a bunch with his number out. I guess the manufacutures pick a few numbers based on who they think will be the key players. I don't know how they pick, though.

I hate getting jerseys with numbers that most people already have...its always a little fun to stand out a bit from the others.

My favorites I have are

Mets #13 Edgardo Alfonzo (yeh, he was an all-star, but at the time every Mets fan had Piazza, Franco and a surprising large amount had Jay Payton)

Bulls #7 Toni Kukoc (Clearly everyone had Jordan or Pippen, but Kukoc is my alltime favorite player)

Colts #58 Gary Brackett (I get a 2 for 1 on this jersey, representing both the Colts and Rutgers)

Islanders #38 Dave Scatchard, with the Assistant Capt A that he only had for half a season. (A personal favorite of mine, he was the hardest working forward on a lot of bad Islanders teams, plus he was a really, really great guy)

growing up in a house of Yanks fans, i still to this day can't remember any of the retired numbers of the Yanks. My dad with a cigar in his mouth would always try to get me to memorize all the yankee greats. He kept telling me I was a bum for not caring about the yankees, yankee greats or baseball in general. I got so pissed off about all the yankee wanking going on that i bought a red sox jersey, and brought it home and my dad yanked the jersey right off of me, started the fire place and burned my jersey i bought. He called me a bum and told me to get the :censored: out of the house and not to come home until i respected the yankees and watched baseball.

Sounds like you and Tank should talk......

That's about as good as the Ducks were this year for their basketball replicas...the majority of our replicas this year were #25, which looks alright, but it's for Chamberlain Oguchi...who happens to be transferring away looking for playing time as a senior (it's a weird situation). Not only that, but he rode the bench and was the seventh or eighth man for most of the year and could never meet his potential at all.

This, while Aaron Brooks exploded, Tajuan Porter burst onto the scene and Maarty Leunen played incredibly well. They started to break out last year's Brooks jerseys mid-year...

I almost got a Reyna 6 Manchester City replica when they were on sale through their team store back a while ago. got my own name instead (I KNOW, I WAS YOUNG AND DUMB) and, serves me right, the ironed-on numbers and name have ended up melding with one another. Crappy.

I really want to make my authentic Blazers road jersey blank into an Arvydas Sabonis one. THROWBACK.

I once saw a guy at a pittsburgh penguins game have a #2 Jim Paek jersey and that guy only played like 5 games in a pens uniform

Paek played for the Pens for a few years, he only played a few games in 1990-91 but played all the time from 1991-92 up until he was traded in 1994.

I saw a few #58 Lambert and #91 Badger or Johnson Pens jersey's back in the 90's.

I have a White Sox road jersey with Parkman on the back. Nobody ever gets the reference.

Well what is it?

(I want to say it's Major League, but I am not really sure).

Back when the Pirates had Derek Bell and he went into "operation shutdown" some guy in the crowd had a #14 jersey with O. Shutdown on the back. I'm all for making fun of overpriced talent, but Derek Bell wasn't like a Bonds to Pittsburgh or worth the jersey price. It would have been a funny t-shirt, but it's not my money.

YoQuieroDerekBell: do i strike you as the sort of individual who would hang a picture ever

i mean, i batted .174 one year and refused to hit in spring training the next year because i felt i didn't need to prove myself. i retired early from a multimillion-dollar job and decided to drive 35 mph over the speed limit with a crack pipe in my car. do you really think i'm the sort of person to look at a wall and think to myself "this wall really needs sprucing up!"

That was hilarious.

ding a ding ding...Major League II...heh, that post gave me the thought of getting a Twins jersey and putting Liston 63 on the back...but then even fewer people would get the reference.

i have many replica and authentic jerseys but the only one i ever got customized was a late 90's phillies batting practice jersey.I picked it up at JcPenney when i worked there for like 15 bucks on clearance and i'm a big stone cold fan so i got it customized with "stone cold" and "3:16" on it...funny thing it was based on the jersey he wore when he took batting practice with them back in 1999.I wore it to the phjillies-braves game last year and oddly enough the score at one point was braves 3 phillies 16 and i heard from friends that they saw the jersey on tv after a score break, lol.

How about anyone who is still capable of showing up at a Flyers game wearing a Lindros jersey. How can you do that?

I know he left on bad terms, but remember the golden days when he was "the next one"? He was dominating nearly every game he played in. He was so much of a physical presence that players were actually afraid to play against him. He captained the Flyers for much of the 90's and led the "Legion of Doom". He was a great player and I'm willing to bet that many Flyer fans during the 90's had him as their favorite player. And why wouldn't they? He was their best guy and he showed it on the ice.

It just so happened that his great career with the Flyers ended on a sour note.

If you're going to personalize a jersey with something other than a player's name, it better be damn funny. Otherwise, it just looks stupid.

This is horribly off topic...but who is that in your avatar? and why didn't you get a larger version? B)

Well, one can debate the merits of Lindros' career in Philadelphia for ages. I think most people would agree that he never really lived up to the hype (although in his favor nobody really could have...) Most people went out and bought their Lindros jerseys before he'd even set foot on the ice in Philadelphia, kicked back, and waited for the parade. Alas, that never materialized, and Lindros went from the saviour of the Flyers to "when can we trade this guy?".

These days you're either some crazy die hard Eric Lindros fan (few) or amazingly naive in the ways of Philadelphia sports to actually show up wearing #88 at a game. (Although, considering this past season it could be seen as ironic...) It's the same as wearing a TO jersey to an Eagles game. Next up is McNabb. It almost says, "Hey guys, can I be a fan too?" The only way to be truly safe when it comes to Philadelphia is to just leave the jersey blank...or put Westbrook on the back irregardless of what sport it is.

At a MetroStars (now New York Red Bulls) game a few years ago at Giants Stadium, I saw a spectator wearing a MetroStars' jersey with the number 69 and the name BANGIN' (yes, with the apostrophe).

The dumbest I've seen was some guy with a jersey (can't remember which team) that was No. 69, "Clit Commander". <_<
