Boston Celtics concept

Yes, I'm dusting off the old Photoshop, bringing out my first concept in over a year. I decided to rehash the Boston Celtics logo a bit, livening it up and cleaning it up. First, the logo (Mine's on the bottom).

celticslogo.gif

Now, the explanation. A couple of things that had always bothered me about the current logo was the overuse of black and the fact that "McBoston" seemed to have no right arm. So the first thing I did was pull a lizard-like trick, regenerating McBoston's right upper-arm. Afterwards, I brightened up the colors, giving him orange Irish hair and matching the color to the basketball and cane. I also made him a non-smoker. :P

Unis and alt logo to come.

The cane looks awkward and out of place now that part of it is hidden...maybe have his hand grab the edge of the circle or lean against it?

I second that suggestion...

While you're at it modify the ball slightly. maybe make it turn on the finger, at least center it on it so it doesn't look like it will fall...

Overall, this is a great idea to modernize him a little...

Not to be rude, but to me, everything that's been changed is a downgrade.

His jacket is now extremely flashy, and almost sparkly looking with the white.

His right arm is now much shorter than it should be. While the angle of the original logo was such that you couldn't see the top of his right arm, the logo was correct for the angle.

Shrinking him a bit and putting his legs behind the circle makes it look like he's going to fall over, and if people had not seen the original logo, would have no idea what that white thing is (his leg).

There is now empty space on the sides where the "Boston" and "Celtics" previously were, weighting the logo incorrectly and making it harder to read being behind the ball (which is never a good thing for a logo.

The red hair is pretty much the only thing that has the possibility of being an upgrade.

What's that brown thing in his hand? Is he a feces-toting Irishman? Oh no, it's a cane. We wouldn't know that if we didn't have the old logo as a reference.

To me, it looks like you changed this logo just for the sake of change--which is not necessarily a bad thing--and each change you made created some kind of problem.

Good attempt, though!

could you give him a cigar for red auerbach? that way you actually have an excuse to change the logo. As a huge boston fan from new england, i kinda don't like this. Change for the sake of change is not always bad, but in a place like boston with a team like the celtics....it is horrible. Celtics fans wouldn't like change for the sake of change. All this logo makes me think is that somebody didn't like the fact that he was smoking, and set out to change it, but changed other things also so it looked like a rebrand. You also must look into the hair color historically. I know orange/red hair is traditionally irish, but think about celtics players that have sported it and come to mind...Bill Walton, Brian Scalabrine, and to an extent Delonte West. Not really a celtics fans' historical heroes. I cant see a change working, but since this is just a concept i will just say change the vest color back, change the undershirt color back, give him a cigar, and consider changing the hair color back to black, or make him larry bird blonde.

Your updated version is better than the other, for sure. It's still not better than the original logo though.

Looking at it again, I have to admit that I really like the gold outline as opposed to the black.

The only way I would recommend messing with something as traditional as this, is to completely clean the logo up and redraw him modernized, leaving the cane, the posture, the vast majority of the colors, and probably even the pipe.

Man, that would be fun!

If you're going to update it, the first thing that you should do is fix the BOSTON CELTICS "font". It looks like someone drew it in 2 minutes with a pencil and didn't even bother to make the letters the same size. Give that a professional look.

Otherwise, I like most of your updates.

Im not a big fan of "Dont change it because of tradition, boo hoo," but unless the new logo is a major improvement I dont see the reason. This looks like change for change sake. I say the original is fine....go radical if you want an impact, like get rid of that dude and use a clover as the primary, etc....you get the idea.

UPGRADES: red hair (as a redheaded Irishman, I like this that much more), addition/regeneration of right chest and shoulder, green shirt.

DOWNGRADES: loss of shillelagh and pipe (adding Red's cigar was a brilliant idea, eRay), white vest, overreliance on gold (a tertiary trim color [at best] has come to infiltrate almost every aspect of the logo), issues with the lettering looks amiss (the CELTICS ought to be oriented the other way, so that every letter's bottom is toward the inside of the logo and expands outward).

OVERALL: lateral move, at best. A step back in some ways, though correcting some of the old flaws was a good move.

Your rant about sigs in your sig is fantastic and spot-on. Do you mind if I put it in mine?

st p is was right straight off. you cannot change an iconic logo subtley. it seems like censorship. leve him how he was or redisign. dont :censored: with a piece of history, it doesnt work like that.

Definately very good modification but i think the problem is the Celtics logo is one that is perfect as is; it can not be improved. However i do think u should be employed to improve half of the logos used by other NBA franchises. e.g Portland, New Orleans, San Antonio
