What's with Utley this and Utley that? Utley has done nothing to show he belongs on the All-Star team this year. Uggla deserves the start and Phillips the backup.

Utley has the best stats as any second baseman in the majors right now. He has more hits, doubles, tied with homers, 15 more RBI, more total bases, higher average, and less errors than Uggla or Phillips. I think he deserves the spot.

I had to leave him off the team to meet the other requirements that MLB puts on the All-Star team.

Utley is hitting .320 he has 54 RBI his OBP is .397 his slugging pct. is .572. He has 30 doubles and 49 runs scored. I'm fairly certain he can stop a ground ball and turn the occasional double play.

If, in your opinion, Utley doesn't have the numbers to at least make the all-star team then it's entirely possible that your standards may be just a tad too high.

Not really all-star related, but I didn't feel like starting a new thread, but I have a question. I was watching PTI today, and I caught the tail end of a discussion on Francisco Rodriguez and something about going over the line. What was it about? I didn't see last night's game, so I know nothing other than Figgins played incredibly well.

Check ESPN360.com, they usually have the PTI segments on there....

Can we start to mass vote for Dan Uggla to start the All-Star game soon? He is most deserving of an All-Star starting position with how well he's playing this year, and he's horribly behind in the fan voting.

I mean, of the following players...

Player A: .261, 15 HR, 47 RBI

Player B: .273, 14 HR, 38 RBI

Player C: .264, 10 HR, 36 RBI

You'd take player A as the All-Star starter, right? That's Dan Uggla.

Player D: .320, 12 HR, 58 RBI, who has a .400 OBP, and an OPS of .952

Sorry, but as a fan of Player D's team, I can't agree with sending him, the way he is underachieving this season. I mean, he's not even leading his team in homers.

Neither is Player A. Oh, and player D is slightly better defensively, according to range factor and fielding percentage.

I'd have to agree with InTheEnd88, here. Player D is outperforming Players A, B, and C offensively. Since Player D apparently also has better defense. D wins. It doesn't (shouldn't) matter that he's not "leading his team in homers." Furthermore, 2B (which I assume we're talking about here) typically aren't power hitters let alone lead the team in homers, so that's not a strong argument. What matters in an all-star selection is that he's the best at the position in his respective league. Any given player doesn't compete with his teammates for a roster spot. (That's in regards to the starters, for players that are selected by the ASG manager that's a different scenario.)

Let's see how I'm doing so far:

My All-Star Ballot:

AMERICAN LEAGUE

C - Jorge Posada, NYY (2nd-Close)

1B - Jason Morneau, MIN (2nd)

2B - Brian Roberts, BAL (?)

3B - Alex Rodriguez, NYY (1st)

SS - Jhonny Peralta, CLE (?)

OF - Magglio Ordonez, DET (2nd)

OF - Ichiro Suzuki, SEA (3rd)

OF - Vladimir Guerrero, LAA (1st)

NATIONAL LEAGUE

C - Russell Martin, LAD (1st)

1B - Prince Fielder, MIL (1st)

2B - Chase Utley, PHI (1st)

3B - Miguel Cabrera, FLA (2nd-close)

SS - Jose Reyes, NYM (1st)

OF - Matt Holliday, COL (6th)

OF - Carlos Lee, HOU (7th)

OF - Eric Byrnes, ARI (where's the love?)

Seems NL fans are smarter or perhaps only fans in Boston, New York, Minnesota and Detroit are voting? Perhaps it's just that the NL's best are easier to identify while the AL's stars are spread out so thin it's tougher to get it right?

At least they got the outfield right. It's the only part of the lineup that the NL fans have slacked on.

Haven't voted online since I hate fan voting but here's who I'd vote for...

American League:

C Jorge Posada

1B David Ortiz

2B BJ Upton

3B Alez Rodriguez

SS Derek Jeter

OF Vladimir Guerrero

OF Magglio Ordonez

OF Ichiro Suzuki

SP would be Josh Beckett. I was thinking Haren but I looked deeper into the stats, particularly FIP*, which is a better way to judge how good a pitcher has pitched, and I decided on Beckett.

C Russ Martin

1B Prince Fielder

2B Chase Utley

3B Miguel Cabrera

SS Jose Reyes

OF Matt Holliday (It's a crime that Holliday is only 6th in fan voting)

OF Barry Bonds

OF Carlos Lee

SP would be Peavy.

*By the way, FIP means Fielding Independent Pitching and measure things that a pitcher is directly responsible for. It is usually a better indicator of how well somebody has pitched than ERA.
