West Point visit inspired Ducks new colours

Legion

Recommended Posts

As Ron MacLean signed off at the end of the Hockey Night in Canada broadcast he mentioned that Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke visited the West Point Academy last year and it had a profound effect on him, furthering his belief in the type of character players he wanted on his team (like American soldiers willing to sacrifice for country, Canadian hockey players willing to sacrifice all for the Stanley Cup).

Anyway, MacLean said that Burke had been assigned by the new owners to select the new colours of the Ducks and coming home from the West Point visit knew he wanted the black and metallic gold scheme of Army. Thus, that's why the black and gold was chosen for Ducks: to symbolize honour through battle (the orange piping was added later to represent Orange County).

Interesting but little consolation for me as a day 1 Senators fan- I'm off to go into a week long depression...

isn't the crest outlined in silver?

I do believe it's white... I could check on friday if you'd like... or wait for PANTONE to chip in his 2 cents.

I like knowing where team's colors come from but I don't like it when they are what they are because of another team that the owner liked or was "inspired by". I'm not really sure why, I guess the idea of someone saying "I like this team so I'm going to use their colors for my team" bothers me. Same thing with jersey numbers that are a tribute to someone else. Always bothered me.

A lot of people have said how they don't like the new Duck's scheme. I, for one, think they look great. Usually I prefer very traditional looks but I think the Ducks are in my personal top 5 for the NHL, in terms of a complete set. For instance, I love the Canadiens home and vintage alt, but hate their current road so that ruins the set for me. I only wish that the black were dark brown. There are some photos of the jerseys, maybe from the NHL shop, were the black looks brown. That would have been perfection for me. Though I don't know how I feel about brown shorts and helmets. That could be terrible.

I heard this bit of info about the color scheme on Versus earlier in the playoffs. It makes me wonder when, exactly, this color scheme was settled upon, since we were hearing so much about dark green, orange, and copper/bronze right up to the unveiling.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

I'm not sure if I agree with you or not regarding team colors being inspired by another team, though I probably disagree (at least as long as the colors make sense for the second team). Even if I agree generally, however, I think an exception is certainly in order when the color scheme is inspired by the United States Military Academy. I see little downside, if any, in paying tribute to any of the service academies. They deserve the honor.

As for choosing jerseys numbers as a tribute to someone else, I couldn't disagree more. Unless you chose 32 as a tribute to O.J. Simpson (and did so after June 1994), I have no problem whatsoever with doing that. Growing up, I loved 5 and 22 because I liked Brooks Robinson and Jim Palmer. In MLB, you see many Latin American players wear 21 in honor of Roberto Clemente. LeBron James wears 23 because he looked up toMichael Jordan. Where is the harm in acting on that admiration in selecting your uniform number?

Could the green, had it been used, have been more dominant on the logo that was leaked when the current ducks alt logo was leaked? Some might know it as the one that looks like the atlanta thrashers logo.

Well slap me thrice and hand me to me mama! I stand corrected.

You type standing up? ;)

I don't mind that they borrowed the black and metallic gold from Army, but I do mind that another NHL team already had that color scheme and very similar uniforms.

I hear what your saying, but when you have a league with 30 teams there are only so many 'original' color combinations you can have. Atleast they didn't go all red.

The green and orange scheme you guys are pointing out would have been perfection. Green on the jersey and orange for the script. Also, I think having the full team name on the front of the jersey instead of the stylized D was a mistake. Hockey jersey's look best when they have a large recognizable stylized logo. When I watch a Red Wings game or a Canadians game I can pick out the logo as they skate and it helps define the team. While I was watching the final all I saw were the gold and black jerseys, they were just a team, not the Ducks. Also, the orange and gold clash something fierce. Isn't anyone tired of teams changing jerseys or creating alts and deciding on black? It's old. So is Metallic Gold as an accent. I liked the color when my Rams put it in but now I wish they'd change it so they weren't like every other team. All I'm gonna say is that the Ducks look like a cheap knockoff of the Pens. It doesn't help that both team mascots are birds, but the Pens settled on black/gold first. Ever they look better at black/yellow. I'd drop cheap from my view of the ducks if they used the D as their main logo, then they'd just be knockoffs. Imagine what a Pens/Ducks series would have looked like! Ugh.
