Brendan
Bonds just announced that he will sit out the HR derby this year.Thats pretty selfish on him. The San Fransico fans put him in the game and have loved him thru all the things he has done. He should pay them back by going in the home run derby. HedleyLamarr
While I was driving to a wedding yesterday, I started thinking about the home run derby.I have always loved the HR derby. I know its not the purest form of baseball, but how many of you would sit in your backyard with a wiffle ball bat or one of the Big Red Bats and play home run derby on a 50 foot field? Or as you got older, always want to have home run derby's in little league and through HS? I know I did.You remember those old "Home Run Derby" shows that used to air on ESPN Classic? The setup was like a baseball game....9 innings, the "outs" were any swings not resulting in homeruns or a called strike by the ump, 3 outs an inning. When I was a kid, we had this Home Run Derby League where we followed this same setup (except for ump-determined strikes, we had a backstop with a strike zone drawn on it to determine called strikes). Our outfield fence wasn't much of a fence....it was basically if a fly ball landed past a certain spot (on the other side of the street for centerfield, past the mailbox in left-center, past the sewer cover in right-center, over the foot-high rock wall in right). The "foul poles" were an old gas lamp pole in left and a mailbox in right. If a ball hit in the air was blocked by a tree while in flight, it was declared "Interference", and no out or homerun was made. (Though, the trees have grown quite a bit from about 10 years ago....)Our Field of Dreams:

DEAD!
The field has been set:ALJustin Morneau Vladimir Guerrero Magglio OrdonezAlex RiosNLRyan HowardAlbert PulojsPrince FielderMy prediction is that Rios takes it.It wouldn't be a bad pick because in this home run hitting contest, the left handed hitter would actually be in a disadvantage. So Rios, Guerrero and Pujols, if he can find his stroke, would be my top choices. I saw, I came, I left.

Billy B
Miguel Cabrera was set to be the final participant, but he withdrew due to injury. His replacement hasn't been announced yet. My pick to win it is Magglio.
HedleyLamarr
I'm going out on a limb and picking Ryan Howard to win it all....

Billy B
Matt Holliday is the last participant and I think either he or Magglio will win it.
NJTank
A few notes on the HR Derby MLB should followLess is More, reduce the competitors from 8 to 6. Make it just two rounds instead of 3 with the Final 3 advancing to the Final. www.sportsecyclopedia.com For the best in sports history go to the Sports E-Cyclopedia at http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com
CC97
Well Rios almost did it -- but if he had to lose to anyone not named Morneau I'm glad it was Guerrero. --- Chris Creamer Founder/Editor, SportsLogos.Net  "The Mothership" • News • Facebook • X/Twitter • Instagram
See Red
Well Rios almost did it -- but if he had to lose to anyone not named Morneau I'm glad it was Guerrero.I wanted Holliday so he might finally get some of the recognition he deserves -- although I'm sure you can argue Rios is in a similar position. He's certainly better than he gets credit for!Great group of guys, though -- difficult to cheer against any of them.
DEAD!
Well, right-handed hitters did have quite an advantage because of the wind (according to this SI writer, it was blowing towards left-field http://fannation.com/blogs/post/35397) But, considering the ballpark's configuration, I did expect right-handed hitters to dominate, and they did. I saw, I came, I left.

WJMorris3
I wouldn't mind them doing what might be called a "Countdown" style next year.8 contestants start, four from each league. The top four home-run hitters among All-Stars are obliged to compete, though no team will have more than one representative in the Derby. This year, the eight would be:Victor Martinez, CLEBarry Bonds, SFAlex Rios, TORMiguel Cabrera, FLAJustin Morneau, MINKen Griffey Jr., CINAlex Rodriguez, NYYPrince Fielder, MILThe batting order will alternate by league, starting with the visiting league's lowest total of home runs, and ending with the home league's home run leader. The batting order stays constant regardless of any eliminations.Competitors get "innings" of 3 outs apiece. Any swing not producing a home run is an out, as would any called strike by the umpire (yes, there'd be an umpire.) All home runs carry over through each round. When the second inning is over, the top seven advance, and the lowest total is eliminated. If there's a tie for last, both will advance. After the third inning, the top six advance. After the fourth, the top five advance. After the fifth, the top four advance. After the sixth, the top three advance. Again, if there's a tie involving an advancing person and an eliminated person, both advance, though there will be an extra person eliminated the next round. After the seventh, we should be down to the top two, unless there was a tie. If there's a tie, the eighth inning can cut down to the top two, if it is possible.Whoever has the most home runs after nine full innings wins the Derby. Should there be a tie, one full extra inning will be played (the 10th). If there's still a deadlock, we go to Sudden Death. Each tied player gets one swing. Whoever hits a home run when all others fail to hit a home run is your champion.(NOTE: If there's a three-way tie at Sudden Death, and two players hit home runs and one does not, the one that does not is eliminated.)
