MLB Retro Month

Recommended Posts

In this thread BRice16 mentioned something about having a retro month in the MLB, and I really liked this idea. So I decided to put together what I thought each team should wear. I am only choosing jerseys from 1960 onwards.

Baltimore

1971

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...1_baltimore.gif

But, only of the Orange jerseys are worn at home. The reason I chose these was the use of the Orange at home, and the Baltimore script on the road.

Boston

1975

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...1975_boston.gif

I like the pullover style better than the button up, and the pullover is the only change I can find that doesn't look like what they wear now.

Chicago

1986

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...986_chicago.gif

I have a strange liking for these unis. Once again I think its because of the pullover look.

Cleveland

1989

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...9_cleveland.gif

I like the racing stripe look of these. They had pullovers back in the 70's, but I don't like the red roads.

Detroit

1973

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...994_detroit.gif

The Tigers had the same jerseys for a while, so the year on this is not the big deal. The homes are pretty much the same as they have now, but the block script is different than now.

Kansas City

1983

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre..._kansascity.gif

The only reason I chose these is the powder blue. Personally I think the powder blues with the Kansas City script is harder to read than the Royals script.

Los Angeles

1973

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre..._california.gif

I really can't find a California Angels jersey I like. They all just seem the same to me. I like this only because of the wordmark.

Minnesota

1976

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...6_minnesota.gif

I like the scripts on both of them, and I really wish the Twins would use a red hat full time.

New York

Just wear what they have. The jerseys have been the same.

Oakland

1972

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...972_oakland.gif

These jerseys should be worn, but only if they use the yellows for the home jersey. Without them they are quite bland.

Seattle

1982

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...982_seattle.gif

These are a mixture between the Indians and Royals ones I choose. I like the racing stripe and the powder blues. Plus the hats are some of the best throwbacks in the MLB.

Tampa Bay

1998

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...98_tampabay.gif

I don't care for these, but these are the only other ones the Rays have besides the current ones.

Texas

1985

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre..._1985_texas.gif

I chose these because of the blue jerseys. They need to wear whites at home, and the blues on the road.

Toronto

1994

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...994_toronto.gif

These are the unis that represent the BLUE Jays. The have BLUE in them.

Well, thats the AL. I'll do the NL tomorrow.

So, Comments, Questions, Arguments?

What do you think?

I would be ecstatic if they wore uniforms similar to this, but Angelos will never give in to the "Baltimore" script on the uniforms.

For your overall selections of the other teams, Most were 70's/80's uniforms. I would like more early century uniforms like the 1905 Tigers, and the 1919 White Sox.

The 1919 Sox jerseys will never be worn, for obvious reasons, but they are a great look. I especially love the old stand-up collar (what the HOF calls a 'military collar'). I have a modern rugby jersey with that type of collar, and it looks so sweet.

heh, for a while now I'd been thinking the Cubs should do something on similar lines for their 150th anniversary, which would be 2026...they'd never go for it, but here's what I thought up:

April: 1909 home and away

worn: Opening Day, Home opener, Fridays

May: 1933 main home (blue placket, wishbone C) and second road (script Chicago)

worn: Fridays, Memorial Day

June: 1942 home and away vests

worn: all Friday games

July: 1957 home and away, complete with white piping on cap

worn: 4th of July, all Friday games

August: 1978 home and away, in all their pullover glory

worn: all Friday games

September/October: 1989 home and away

worn: all Friday games, 9-11

heh, I wanted some excuse to get em in the 91 or 94 roads to be honest, but the regular season is only 6 months long and the homes that went with those are only minutely different from the current homes, which I presume would largely remain unchanged in 2026.

Here is the National League.

Arizona

1998

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...998_arizona.gif

There was not much to choose from, but the unis the wore when the entered the league were the ones I chose.

Atlanta

1974

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...974_atlanta.gif

These jeresys were the ones worn during the year when Hank Aaron hit number 715. It was a hard desecion between thees and the Dale Murphy era powder blue ones. But, in the end th Hammering Hank won over.

Chicago

1982

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...982_chicago.gif

I really liked the Cubs older jerseys (See Discrim's post). But, sticking with the 1960 or later rule, I chose these. I am a very big fan of the pullovers, and I like the royal blue here. If you can't tell if possible I want the team to were some shade of blue. I like blue.

Cincinnati

1967

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre..._cincinnati.gif

This was the first year after they dropped the red sleeves from the jersey. This was also the first year of the red cap. The logo also seems easier to read on these as compared to the previous one.

Colorado

They haven't had new jerseys since the have entered the league. IMO they need new ones.

Florida

1993

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...993_florida.gif

These bring back the teal pinstripes and the teal hats, which are more liked than the black jerseys and hats. These are also what the Marlins wore when they first entered the league.

Houston

1975

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...975_houston.gif

I am going to catch flak for this, but I love these jerseys. IMO it's better than all of there other jerseys.

Los Angeles

They are all pretty much the same as all there others.

Milwaukee

1978

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...8_milwaukee.gif

These are what they wear for retro Fridays. The road once again confirms my love for blue jerseys.

New York

1982

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...982_newyork.gif

These are the same style jerseys they wore in '86, but they road has a blue jersey. Yes, I love blue.

Philadelphia

1979

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...hiladelphia.gif

The Phils have the same basic jersey, but in this year, they had an alternate Red home jersey.

Pittsburgh

1979

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre..._pittsburgh.gif

Yes, the Pirates had 5 different combos of uniforms. I chose these because of the full yellow jersey and the striped hats, both the black and yellow ones.

San Diego

1978

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...78_sandiego.gif

Yes, I like the yellow and brown unis. The hat is my favorite part of the whole look. Plus they won't have to worry about clashing with anyone in the brown.

San Fransisco

1978

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...anfrancisco.gif

I like the orange. Yes, they would look like the Orioles. The orange one is my favorite part.

St. Louis

1978

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...978_stlouis.gif

Ok, the NL had some great unis in the late 70's. The Ozzie era unis in there powder glory were the best ones the Cards ever had.

Washington

1980

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...80_montreal.gif

Ok. I admit. I like the Expos jerseys, way better than the old Senators ones. These Expos ones, have another weakness. Powder Blue, and racing stripes.

Well, thats all. Comments?

Didn't Arizona have 12 uniform combinations that first year? Seriously.

St. Louis

1978

Those are some sweet uniforms, but Ozzie was on the Padres in 1978. :D

1) I would love to see the Angels break out a cap with the big halo. I know they're gimmickly and no doubt require extra work by the manufacturer, but I think they're fun

2) The Mets would wear the 1986 version with the racing stripes.

3) I like the Rockies uniforms, at least the base set. That black vest with the white trim is brutal.

4) I know I'm in the minority, but I love the Braves' feather on the sleeve look.

I like your choices. But I would have the Yankees switch to their pre-70s road uniforms, without the sleeve stripes and white outline on the lettering.

Just a couple of thoughts from me:

- Even though the Nats were formerly the Expos, I'd like to see them wear these from the 1906 American League Nats.

- I'd like to see the Cubbies go for the look of the 1911-1912 Cubs.

- Just so Houston wouldnt have to wear those hideous striped ones, they could either go with these from 1965-1970 or these from 1971-1974.

- I'd like to see St. Louis go a little futher back to these from 1940.

- The O's could also use these from the 1975-1987 era.

- Maybe it's because this is how I remember the Tigers, but the look from 1985-1993 was nice.

I'm still hoping that the Yanks do that for their first year in New Yankee Stadium.

I'd MUCH prefer these

Astros 1995

The full Rainbow jersey has been done too many times now. The last year the Astros wore the blue and gold was 1999, its too early to turn the clock back to them. I want to see one of these...

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...mp;Entryid=1055

or

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...mp;Entryid=1588

or if they really wanted to celebrate Houston baseball, the Houston Buffaloes were Houston's first (though it be minor) baseball team

Here's my take on the American League.

Man how I wish Baltimore would go with this set from 1968.

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...8_baltimore.gif

They only wore the vest style the one year, but it's absolutely one of my favorite jerseys ever. Combine that one with the "Baltimore" on the road jerseys and you've got a combo that can't be beat for me.

For Boston, I'd vote 1931 with pinstripes just to revive a rare look.

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...1931_boston.gif

The White Sox could not go wrong with 1952 or 1970. These are so beautiful they bring a tear to my eye.

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...952_chicago.gif

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...969_chicago.gif

In Cleveland, 1933 gets my vote.

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...3_cleveland.gif

Detroit. No question - 1927 rules!

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...927_detroit.gif

Kansas City would be their first year of 1969 with the script "Kansas City"

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre..._kansascity.gif

The Angels should just go back to year 1 of 1965. Any excuse to wear the halo caps must be taken.

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre..._california.gif

Minnesota - also their classic first set as worn in 1965 when they were AL champs.

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...5_minnesota.gif

Unless we go with 1910 back in the early days in Washington for Minnesota

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre..._washington.gif

New York - 1903, again year one, just to find something different that people my not remember

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...903_newyork.gif

Oakland - Let's go with the "A's" logo and the vest look from 1970

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...970_oakland.gif

Seattle. As long as we have to, let's go with 1981

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...981_seattle.gif

Tampa. Uh, not much to pick from so let's go with year one, 1998

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...98_tampabay.gif

Texas - 1983 stands out as being unique. Love the chest logos.

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre..._1983_texas.gif

First year of the button downs for Toronto from 1989

http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dre...989_toronto.gif
