Packers helmet logo

The 1960's Packers helmet logo was almost football shaped, sometime around 1970 it changed to an oval. The difference is very subtle, sort of like the difference between the Jets logo now and the Namath-era one.

When exactly did this change occur?

I'll check my yearbooks tonight.  If I had to guess, I'd say it was something along the lines of the Dolphins logos from the early 70s, where various players had different versions at the same time (i.e., Dolphin head in the sun or Dolphin head out of the sun), as well as their various sock and striping combinations.

It's where I sit.

Along the same lines, the Packers also over the course of years have greatly moved around where the logo decal goes on the helmet.

Currently it is pretty much centered on each side but rides a little high.

In the Forrest Gregg and Lindy INfante eras it sat very low, almost to the ear hole and slightly toward the back of the helmet.  I actually really liked that look but that is cause I grew up with it.

THis has to be an equipment manager thing right?  I mean, presumably teams helmets need new paint now and again, a new sticker.

Anyone else notice that?

I miss the 80's Redskins. THe Offensive line never had their helmets touched up... I remember watcing Super Bowl XXVI, and the Hogs helmets were just smashed up, had gouges in them, the decals were just ripped to shreds, some of then were completely ripped off... man... they looked liked badasses... great look.. i wish some o-line would do that again... Show the scars of battle...

i remember this one dude on our team, we all called him Big D, and we had Eagle-like helmets at the time, dude's wings were all busted up by about the week before the second game, IIRC. I too have a soft spot for seeing a plopload of scuffmarks and busted up logos on helmets, seeing as a couple years ago i was surrounded by em :) but i figure every other HS team has one guy whose decals are all danged up like that, ya know?

i understand why the NFL has its rule against it, 1) got the means to shine the hardhats up, so they do, and 2) the image thing...but isn't the battle in the trenches an image worthy of milking til the last cow? guess not

After further consideration, I think the logo has always been centered on the side of the helmet, but as the shape and design of the helmets have changed, so has the logo's place in relation to the distingushing parts of the helmet (eg earhole, etc.)

I'll try to find a difinitive time when they reshaped the logo (although the change looks to have already taken place by the time the Lynn Dickey photo was taken). Another detail about the Packer logos of the 60's is that they are two pieces - the green "football" is one decal while the "G" is a separate decal. This photo from Helmet Hut of linebacker Dave Robinson's helmet illustrates this two-layer decal as parts of the "G" are coming off.

Unfortunately, all of Helmet Hut's Packer helmets are from the early to mid-60's.  My guess is that the shape was modified slightly when they went to a one-piece decal, which was in the early 1970's.

I'm a big Packer fan and I noticed the change in the Packers helmet logo also. It did take place around 1970 or so. The original, football-shaped logo -- which I think was far more attractive than its replacement -- had a thinner outline and was almost non-symetrical...you can see it here in this photo of Bart Starr (scroll down a bit for his photo)...

Compare that to the elliptical and symetrical logo as seen here in this photo of Aaron Rodgers...

I don't know why the change was made..and I'm certainly grateful for the Packers' great team of today...but the logo of yesteryear -- and of the great Packer teams of the 1960s -- was a gorgeous classic, and deserves to be reinstated.

I always thought that was so goofy, like the equipment guy couldn't get it right. Never thought of it as being intentional.

Here's a '64 pic showing the more footballish shape:

Ran across this one and was amused by the double helmet numbers. Why the handwritten one when there's decals right there?

Another very obvious shape change is between the Namath-era Jets (football shape) and later versions (oval).
