its an evolved classic.

nothing should be branded as untouchable. Keep it fresh yet familiar. If it starts to look old, clean it up and it will look like new again.

This is where you and i will forever disagree.

There is nothing wrong with the NFL logo of today. Why mess with it? THey havn't really "changed" anything... so why touch it at all? Makes no sense. All they did was downgrade one of the most classic and identifiable league marks in the world.

Boo.

This is where you and I agree. Taken separately, some of the elements might be an upgrade (fewer stars, darker colors -- but NOT the new font), but there was no need for it to "evolve."

The logo was changed to be consistent with the NFL's font used in all its graphics.

Snap, I was going to note the use of Serifa.

That's what I get for having a day job. <_<

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Tisk, tisk....

Any logo that is branded "untouchable" is bad business for a designer. If you couldn't make it better than more than half of all designers would be out of work.

Job security my friends...JOB SECURITY!!!!

Why?

An iconic logo gets plastic surgery. Who's kiddin' who? Is the NFL starting to feel old, useless, obsolete, no longer sexy?

Trying to get one step ahead of the competition?---"Take that, Arena Football League!"

Now, let's work on that ancient MLB logo. Give the guy some biceps, a cool-flow helmet. Action lines. Put a snarl on his face.

Put some baggy shorts on that NBA logo.

They gave reasons, and I personally think the lessening of the stars for printing purposes is a solid one.

Those swashes were beginning to look dated, and the 25 stars were too cluttered. I freaked when I saw the title, but this is a well-done evolution of the NFL shield. If only the NHL could've been so lucky.

Now, normally I'd agree with the sentiment that it's cleaner, more modern, etc. But to me it looks like it lost character.

I like the new football, for sure, it loosk great. The lack of stars makes the top look much too stark, however. I really like the reasoning for going with eight stars, but I think they could have arranged it a lot better.

And then there's the NFL text. Sure, they're bringing it in line with their other graphic treatments. But in doing so, the logo has lost its unique feel. Plus, it wasn't even executed very well. The angles look very forced, and as others have mentioned, don't fit the shield at all. While some of the curvature of the old logo looked a bit goofy, I'll take that over trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

I hate change.... but I love this logo. I like the darker blue and while I like the old font I don't think that is what made it a classic logo. I think the new font is okay but the football is so much better and tying it into the look of the ball on the Lombardi was a good idea. The 8 stars makes perfect sense especially when 25 did'nt. They also kept the basic shape of the shield intact while making it slightly taller and sleeker. What is there not to love?

Forget the logo, check out the link to sportslogo.net at the bottom. thats awesome. now, remembering the logo, i like it. it does pop a lot more. I'm upset to see the stylized font changed but i'll note that that dropped "F" really keeps the feel of the original. the only part that bugs me is the negative space above and below the ball, but im sure i'll get used to it. Its gonna be a vast inprovement in areas where the logo is used very small, such as the equipment logo and on the pants. and if anyone remembers the talk of this around the super bowl, i think this was done by the same guy who did the chargers update....
