-kj
Most of you don't know much about the USL First Division (the next division down from MLS), but the California Victory are a San Francisco-based team that started this season. They are owned by a second division club from Spain, Deportivo Alavés. Alavés's owner was a little on the odd side, to say the least, and of course the Victory were run on a shoestring budget. Despite this, they seem to have gained a small but reasonably loyal set of supporters.A month or so ago, Alavés was sold. Most are being led to believe that this will mean the end of the Victory. So, one fan is trying to raise the funds to have the Victory become a fan-owned team, akin to AFC Wimbledon or FC United of Manchester in England.http://www.savethevictory.org/ Buy some t-shirts and stuff at KJ Shop! Mac the Knife
This guy thinks he's gonna buy this team on the cheap. I have news for him - rather than sell too far below market value, an owner'd be better off folding his team and taking the tax loss.So $2 million may, or may not, be enough. Brian in Boston
With Lew Wolff bringing Major League Soccer's San Jose Earthquakes back to the Bay Area next season, I'm thinking it's not exactly the right time to be trying to sell stock in a minor-league soccer team serving the same region. -kj
I wouldn't be surprised if $2m was over the odds for that franchise, really.(Second division, damnit.)
