I'd venture that not getting A-rod was beneficial to the Sox, but that's another debate I believe. I can understand to an extent keeping Santana from the Yankees, but isn't that cutting off the nose to spite the face? If the Red Sox would rather have proven commodities I can understand trading some tremendous potential for one of the best pitchers around, but considering they're coming off a decisive World Series victory, it doesn't appear they need to make any massive additions such as this, especially considering the price.

I think the records from last year are misleading. I hate to use a hypothetical situation here, but if you look at Eric Gagne's performance down the stretch, he cost them big time. They had a 7 game lead before they acquired him, which shrank as his ERA ballooned and he blew saves. I don't think you would've seen such a close division race at the end if you take his poor performance out. I know it's highly speculative, but I think it's worth mentioning.

Santana doesn't just win a lot of games, he eats a lot of innings too. In turn, the Yankees bullpen doesn't have to be tapped into as often, making them fresher. The Yankees bullpen blew some games too, because of being overused.

Theo doesn't think along those lines of screwing the Yankees or he would've gone after A-Rod. He may try and do those things if the price is right, but I think he's pretty good at looking towards what's best for the ball club.

If the Red Sox pickup Santana without giving up Clay Buchholz or Jacoby Ellsbury it would be an absolutely incredible deal.

Yankees seem willing to throw the farm at Minnesota to keep the Sox from getting Johan.

Hughes AND Kennedy AND Melky? The Yankees have lost their :censored: ing minds.

I can almost understand why they're loading up their side of the deal, though; they really don't have a choice. If the Red Sox end up getting Santana, the Yanks are absolutely s-c-r-e-w-e-d. They have to get this guy, or deal with Beckett/Santana/Dice-K for god knows how many years.

Beckett/Santana/Dice-K

Good Lord

And add Buchholz who projects as a potential ace for just about any team.

The oldest of the group being Santana at 28.

It's things like this that make me glad the Phillies are in the NL East and not the AL East. ^_^

So, uh, when do you think I can pre-order this? :P

I don't know... I'm still not convinced he's going to end up in Boston considering the guys that are in charge in New York are insane.

If the Yankees offer Hughes/Kennedy/Melky... I don't see how the Yankees don't land Santana unless the Red Sox throw in some more. It would be a steal if the Red Sox can pull this thing off without dealing Buchholz or Ellsbury.

Nah I agree, I was just being overly optimistic. I highly, HIGHLY doubt the Red Sox get this done with the rumored combination of Lester/Crisp/Masterson/Lowrie. If Ellsbury and/or Buchholz aren't involved, I can't see how the Twins could rationalize this one as getting "fair value."

Yeah. Masterson and Lowrie are very good prospects... Lowrie's probably MLB-ready, even. But Masterson may eventually be best suited as a reliever. Crisp has a lot more value than he appears... last season's numbers defensively may have been better than Hunter or Andruw Jones' or any other active CF's best seasons. He was that good in the field. Plus there may be a comfort level in the Central that he never found in Boston. Lester used to be an elite prospect, I believe, but he doesn't seem like he will become what he was projected to become when I watch him pitch. A lot of smoke and mirrors...

It is a pretty good package when you think about it... but we're talking about a two-time Cy Young winning 28 year old in Johan Santana.

Another interesting aspect is that the Red Sox, while interested, may be looking to drive up the price for the Yankees because the Yankees know they can't let the Sox get Santana.

Another note... if this deal doesn't get done because the Red Sox are unwilling to part ways with Ellsbury it'd be a huge mistake by Theo and company.

What on Earth is Omar Minaya thinking/smoking!? Lastings Milledge was either the future of the Mets or the chip that would land them the missing piece. And they trade him for...Ryan Church and Brian Schneider!?

That is an odd trade. Milledge will probably be just as good as Church, but has a higher upside. Then they also get a back up catcher. Not a very good trade IMO. I was hoping the O's would go after Milledge. The Mets must have valued him much lower than I thought.

I don't think it is the Mets valuing Milledge too low, but the fact that they tried to trade him to other teams and nobody wanted him. If the Mets were unable to trade Milledge now, what they should have done was play him in '08 and hope he has a good season then if they were still willing to trade him more teams would want him.

They could've traded him two seasons ago to the A's for Zito and probably would've had that pitcher there in the playoffs that would've pushed them past the Cards and on to the rusty ass Tigers. Brilliant, New York management just won some brownie points with me :)
