MLS Seattle = Emerald City FC

I can understand the gimmicky argument, but Dallas Burn, New York New Jersey MetroStars were much more gimmicky without the attempt to have familiar ring to it. I like the step MLS is taking and this is the next one. When i first heard the name Arsenal, I didnt understand it, or know where they were from, but I figured it out. The "City+ Nickname" is fine, but I think there is room for variations. I was disappointed in the MLS when they half-assed it with New York Red Bulls as opposed to Red Bull New York as well as rejecting Dynamo Houston. Emerald City works for me. I feel like a a variation to the home city's name seems to make it belong to the fans even more, if that makes any sense.

Oh yeah I feel all those you just named were more gimmicky, but I think that something along the lines of Seattle FC, even FC Northwestern, would be better than Emerald City FC.

Uhhh...it is Red Bull New York.

Uhhh...They are referred to as the New York Red Bulls on every MLS on ESPN promo Ive seen or heard. Their website is www.newyorkredbulls.com, which has a caption, "New York Red Bull players Chris Leitch and John Wolyniec participated in the MDA's 11th annual Muscle Team event, held Tuesday, January 8 at Chelsea Piers.". It is referred to as the official site of Red Bull New York, but my point was that they decided to be known as both (stupid, since that makes them Red Bull New York Red Bulls). Given that option, American sports media will choose the familiar sounding City+Nickname version, which I hear and read about 5:1 over the euro version.

Northwestern would be a great name! Seems like the more thought they try and put into these names, the less successful they turn out, and i think Northwestern says everything that needs to be said. although do we need the FC part? couldnt they just be officially called Northwestern Football Club, then everyone takes it for granted and simply calls them Northwestern? It works for Arsenal!

I'm not feeling the name Northwestern; probably because I live 6 blocks from Northwestern University. I don't know how many people outside of Big Ten country are familiar with Northwestern U., but it would throw me off.

I kind of like Emerald City FC; it does sound kind of silly, but it's kind of interesting. Seattle FC is fine, but smacks of laziness.

Is there a Scotland FC? Because that would be akin to calling this Northwestern FC.

I'd prefer something like Pacific Northwest FC (if we MUST go the europoser route)...

Pacific NW or Northwestern would be a tough sell, since the MLS has all but said that Portland and Vancouver will join MLS down the road. For the moment they represent the NW in the MLS, but fans in Portland and Vancouver are just as rabid about their history that is just as rich. The only difference is they didnt have Hollywoods deep pockets to buy them a team.

I remember this concept, very nice job on it.

I like the Puget Sound idea, sounds traditional, yet unique at the same time. It also refers to the region as a whole, and not just the city.

The only thing I don't think would work is SC. If they keep up with the current fad they will go with FC, or something else "soccer-ish". Plus Puget Sound FC sounds better than Puget Sound SC, IMO.

I just don't understand the intense desire on the part of so many people to abandon the traditional Seattle Sounders name as the official brand of the new MLS franchise. I constantly hear people bemoaning the fact that professional soccer in the United States lacks tradition and history. The Seattle Sounders name enjoys 24 seasons (over 34 years) of tradition and history. Said tradition and history includes five divisional titles, two conference titles, four league championships in seven championship final appearances, and four finishes atop the regular-season table. Said tradition and history includes the exploits of players including Alan Hinton, Alan Hudson, Geoff Hurst, Jimmy McAllister, Peter Hattrup, Marcus Hahnemann, Preston Burpo, Mack Baena and Brian Ching. Even legendary English footballer Bobby Moore (OBE) donned the Seattle Sounders kit during his storied career. THAT, my friends, is as fine an example of tradition and history as U.S. professional soccer has to offer. Yet, because the structure of the Seattle Sounders identity doesn't ape the branding conventions of international-style soccer club names, people want to jettison it for some newly-created, "cut-from-whole-cloth", faux Euro-style name. It's idiotic. To adopt such a name trashes a prime example of the very tradition and history people claim American soccer doesn't possess.

Seattle might not want to keep their history by dropping the Sounders monacher....but atleast i can almost guarantee that when Vancouver gets into the MLS (whenever they get around to building the new stadium) they will keep the Whitecaps FC name

Uhhh...it is Red Bull New York.

Y'Know, a more simplified version of this would be nice.

As long as they ditch that pastel green and simplify it like you said I'd be fine with that.

Actually, the name of the organization is Red Bull New York. The name of the playing team is New York Red Bulls. It is confusing and stupid. Just choose one.

You are correct about the names. It's confusing if one doesn't know the basis behind the Red Bull company that purchased the franchise two years ago, but it doesn't bother me. When I look at standings or anything else in print outside of official franchise stationery, I prefer the city/state/regional name first and then the nickname.

As for the rumored possible name of the MLS expansion team for Seattle, what in God's name are those in charge thinking?

"Emerald City FC"? Ugh, a page out of The Wizard of Oz is right. Geez. Just name them the Seattle whatever.

I also heard that Drew Carey is a minority owner of the franchise.

Sounders

I have heard that the Sounders name will still be in use for a team in the region that will continue to play in the lower divisions. It's been linked to minor league soccer for so long, it was thought best to keep it a minor league name.

Emerald City FC

I like it. Especially since the city of Seattle officially dropped the Emerald City name in favor of "Metro Natural" last year. Horrible decision and hopefully this will bring it back. Yes it has its Wizzard of Oz tie but I've been here long enough to think of Seattle when I hear it rather than the Wizzard of Oz.

Drew Carey was on "The Late Late Show" Tuesday night (or is that Wednesday morning) and said the team had 10,000 season tickets sold already. The 'name the team' contest was apparently ongoing, and he said he'd convinced the club's ownership to agree to have an election on the team's GM every four years.

So perhaps all this is just a rumor.

A Seattle MLS front-office source has confirmed that the name-the-team "contest" Carey referred to is actually just the solicitation of team name suggestions the club has been engaged in. There is no "contest" per se.

I think we've already beaten this topic to death on a similar thread a few weeks back.

There is something to be said about tradition and history. That being said, I think its much smarter for them to start fresh and new considering that they will be playing in a major professional soccer league with national and world exposure. The same argument could have been made for the New York team being called the Cosmos. That team had much more history and tradition than the Sounders yet noone is complaining about not keeping THAT name. The current NY name is awful but it would have been a bad mistake to keep the old Cosmos name. I think it is the same with the Sounders. Not to mention, its not a great name, and it doesn't evoke any tradition or history outside of a select few thousand fans in the Seattle area. Not too many MLS fans will care that much that the new team went with something different. It will pass under the radar.
