jkrdevil
Wow... anything can be turned into a political debate.'Tis the season. And only eleven more months to go!Until the start of the 2012 Presidential election. Im sure as time progressed, Landis would adjust to changes and there would be minorities and more franchises. Keep in mind, Landis was commish from 1921-1944, and those franchises were based in locations that were the ideal locations of the time. Also, Landis died before Branch Rickey even made an effort to sign Jackie Robinson. I can't see Landis putting his foot down to changes like that.If it weren't for Landis black players would probably be in the Major League sooner than 1947. Landis was a huge racist. Before he became commissioner of baseball he famously had boxer Jack Johnson aressted for "transporting a white women across state lines". The reason why Rickey or any other team signed any black players is because Landis would have prevented it as he had absolute full control over the sport because he came in after the black sox scandal. In the 40's the Pirates tried to sign Josh Gibson but were blocked by Landis. In 1944 Bill Veeck tried buy the Phillies with the intention of intergrating them and was blocked by Landis. It's not a coincidence that the Dodgers signed Robinson just 4 months after Landis died and Chandler became commissioner.
