Not in his contract...just something that the marketing guy said they'd do if he re-upped.And they're ugly. I can see maybe a camo hat or something, but to completely mess with an entire uniform on a regular basis doesn't appeal to me. You don't see the Yankees going out on the field in yellow fireman's gear or police blues with a gun strapped to their hips. A hat as a tribute is more than enough, please leave the uniforms alone. Hopefully replicas of these camo's don't wind up wind up in the souvenier stores - that would be tacky and cause one to question the motives of the marketing department, which has been first rate up to now. Finally, I gotta say it, from a pure baseball perspective, they hardly need the camo jerseys. Playing dress-up in soldier shirts =/= honoring the troops. I understand the urge, but you know, my grandparents' generation managed to fight and win a world war and respect the heck out of America's soldiers, and none of their baseball teams dressed in combat fatigues. They wore sleeve patches to promote war bond sales or civilian physical fitness. Something like that would support the troops. A physically fit young man who chose to make millions playing a game instead of serving his country in wartime dressing in camo is all about calling attention to oneself. It's very nearly the opposite of supporting the troops. I'm doubly upset at the Padres, since not only are they mistaking dress-up for actual troop support, they already have uniforms that look like what the Navy and Marine Corps wear in San Diego! My dread is that, now that it's spread to Chicago, it can't be long before the Washington Nationals feel the pressure to go camo. Ugh. Someone has got to tell teams: You "support" troops by helping them in some material way, not by making your clothes out of the same material that the troops wear. Free tickets for vets. Fund-raising auctions. Pro-enlistment sleeve patches. Inviting recruiters to your games. And so on. Those are things that would support the troops. Wearing camo jerseys is self-indulgent BS. Probably a little too well received. That generation spat out way too many kids as it was, could you imagine them fueled by Viagra and Levitra? As for the question of whether sporting camo uniforms supports the troops or not.... As one who doesn't support the troops, I definitely think these teams "playing dress up" provides comfort and support for soldiers and their families. It basically reminds people to think about them and states that the organization has a positive take on them - which isn't really a popular position. The new digital camo patterns -- either the Marine Corps patterns or the Army patterns that are also being adopted by the Air Force -- are much more attractive. They're also less visually busy when seen from a distance, so that jersey scripts, names, and numbers will be more readable. Army digital camo:Marine Corps digital camo (MARPAT), three-color desert version:Much better patterns for jersey use, and they have the advantage of being what soldiers actually wear. I prefer the Army version, just because I think it will show jersey graphic elements better, and there is a desert (tan/brown) version available.
