um why is people picking the brewers to win the world series? They are not even making the playoffs nevermind winning a World Series. If they have a winning season i'll be shocked like hell. They've been irrelevant since the early 80s.

oh and the Red Sox is winning the world series against some throwaway team.

I picked them because I can't pick against them...there is no money on this and who says I cant. They have a legitimate shot at the playoffs, with the "young guns" having a year of experience under their belt. Yes the World Series is a stretch, but here are the reasons the Brewers can contend. It's also hard to say they were irrelevant last year considering they finished only 2 games out of the playoffs, and forced San Diego to play Colorado in the Wild Card Game.

- 3rd Base will not be a defensive liability with the Bill Hall bumping Ryan Braun into the outfield

- They have picked up veterans to improve the bullpen, Torres and Mota

- If Gange can be the pitcher he was in Texas and not in Boston, he'll be fine

- Addition of Mike Cameron to bolster the outfield, and Jason Kendall is an improvement over Estrada...defensively, on the base paths, and hitting for average/OPB

- Ben Sheets is in a contract year, hopefully he can stay healthy

- They are young, and deep

-The NL Central is weak

I've noticed this on a couple of the predictions....how come folks are picking the wild card team to reach the World Series? If that team is good enough to win the league pennant, wouldn't make sense to also have them winning their own division along the way? I know wild card teams have made and won the World Series before, but it doesn't make much sense to predict a team will be the best in it's league and not the best in it's own division....

Not necessarily. The Wild Card team could be one that starts out slowly, turns it on in the second half, and makes a run in the playoffs. Or, on the contrast, the WC team could have been in the lead most of the season only to be trumped by said hot team, but will still be a force in the playoffs. Once you are in the playoffs, it doesn't matter where you finished the regular season.

Because it happens at least decently often. In the last 8 years, 7/16 teams in the World Series have been Wild Card teams.

2006: Tigers

2005: Astros

2004: Red Sox

2003: Marlins

2002: Angels AND Giants

2000: Mets
