Creamer NCAA Top 25 Poll

Gary

Recommended Posts

I just received a PM from Gary asking me to do it. Unfortunately it is too short of notice, otherwise I would. I'm about to go to bed and have a big test tomorrow then work all weekend. If anyone else would like to tabulate the votes for this week, post here.

Are we suppost to include points in our polls

No, when Gary calculates the rankings for each ballot a team gets points based off where they are ranked. So your #1 team will get 25 points, and your 325 team will get 1 point. It's like that for every ballot, and the points are added up to get the final rankings.

Epi, how big a lead does Bama have over Oklahoma?

Did you vote Bama?

I did, and they are separating themselves from everyone else. Their "lead" over the #2 team will probably increase provided a win over Kentucky next week.

Do you mind sharing your formula? I'm curious.

(And wouldn't mind tweaking for my own use with international soccer matches. I haven't been able to come up with something decent yet.)

Not at all. It's quite simple. Teams are sorted by their rating which is the sum of each game rating. For each game, teams get 1 (-1) point for a win (loss) and a "bonus factor" to account for opponent strength. Here are the formulas:

Rating = Sum(Game Rating)

Game Rating = +/-1 + (Opp. Pwr. - .5)

Power = ((Pct.*2)+Opp. Pct.)/3

FCS level schools are automatically given a .000 for their "Power" and "Pct." to punish teams that whoop up on smaller schools.

To give some examples, an team with a 1.000 winning percentage against opponents that have a combined .1 winning percentage would have a Power of .700 [((1.000*2)+.100)/3=.700] Does that make sense?

(And wouldn't mind tweaking for my own use with international soccer matches. I haven't been able to come up with something decent yet.)

Go ahead. On a related note, I have modified this formula to deal with soccer matches. (I did it for an online league I participated in). Essentially it's the same deal except I muliplied the game result (the +/-1 here) with the "bonus factor" (the "Opp. Pwr. - .5" part). Furthermore, I changed the the game result part to 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss. Effectively the formula became:

Game Rating=(Result)*(Opp. Pwr. - 0.5)

Epi, how big a lead does Bama have over Oklahoma?

After 5 weeks, #1 Alabama (5.332) holds a 1.725 point lead over #10 Oklahoma (3.607). One point is due to Alabama simply having one more win than Oklahoma (5-0 v. 4-0). Alabama has also played tough competition (teams with winning records) which accounts for their .332 "bonus." Oklahoma on the other hand has played less than stellar competition which is why their rating is less than 4. They've been "punished" for playing cupcakes.

A quick note, I tabulate these in a spreadsheet and the "Opp. Pct." portion takes into account all opponents on the schedule, even ones not played yet. Ideally, I'd exclude games not played yet, but I haven't found a way to simply do that. I don't find it that pressing of an issue and as the season wears on that issue is minimized because teams play more of their schedule.

Apologies to Gary if divulging my methods was inappropriate.
