Tampa Bay Buccaneers to wear orange throwbacks in 2009

Can't wait, my favorite uniforms will be back, at least for one game..

Now if they could just play the Seahawks wearing THOSE uniforms.

Now that they've been playing in the same conference since 2002, I'm sure that would be possible.

Tampa Bay could play at Seattle in 2009. If they finish in the same place that is.

I'm a die-hard Bucs fan and sad to hear this. This needs to stay in the past. Heck, they rarely wear the reds (which are my fav. uni in the NFL) so why take away another date off that uni?

When I wear my orange (from those days) it at least lets me show how long I've been a fan and not just one of the kewl people who bought some of the stuff that made its way out.

What about the "not allowed" to wear orange argument?

I'd love to see 'em wear the throwbacks all year. But if it just one game, Gruden should walk the sidelines in McKay's white hat and sunglasses.

I always thought it was owner Malcom Glazer who hated the Orange. But who knows, with the massive debt he inherited from Man U, and the financial markets plummeting, maybe selling a few extra throwback jerseys makes the Creamsicle a little more palatable!

Buccaneers 2009 Opponents

Assuming they'd wear these at home, the options would be...

Division: Falcons, Saints, Panthers

NFC East: Cowboys, Giants

AFC East: Jets, Patriots

The NFC North team that finishes the same place Tampa does in the South.

So no Seahawks and no Rams or Eagles ('79 Championship game and Divisional game opponents)

From a pure asthetic standpoint, I've always loved the Bucs-Cowboys uniform matchup from the 1981 Playoffs.

On a side note, how great of a home schedule to bring Dallas, both New York teams (a lot of transplants in the area) and the Patriots into Raymond James. And a tradtional opponent from the NFC North to boot, especially if that's Chicago or Green Bay.

Too bad that Chris Hovan will ruin the look with his basketball jersey posing as a football jersey look.

I wish that if they wore the white jerseys, they would go with the Spurrier as QB 1st year jerseys with the orange trimmed by red numbers, rather than the red trimmed by orange.

But these aren't bad either:

I'd mention how I'm feeling about this...but those of you who know me know how I feel already. :D

Guess my cuz n' em finally broke through to Ol' Man Glazer about these things here. They been trying to do this for at least the last six years. He (Brooks) and several other long-time Buccaneers felt it would be a fitting tribute not only to Tampa bay Buccaneer history, but to other former Buccaneer greats that came before them. (Of course, all this was back when Paul Gruber, Tony Mayberry, Mike Alstott, John Lynch, Trent Dilfer, and Warren Sapp were still part of the team.)

This is how my cuz told me it broke down, as far as the creamsicles go: Ol' man Glazer HATES them. He never again wanted them to see the light of day. On top of not liking how they look, in his mind they symbolized all the losing, all the pathetically bad Buccaneer teams of old, and he was determined to recast the image of the Buccaneers as winners. (FWIW, that 1997 redesign had been in the works at least two years before anything was unveiled.)

Either way it go...if this does actually go down, I for one hope they go with the ORANGE TOPS WTIH WHITE PANTS. I know the most common image of the creamsicles is white top/orange pants and socks, but the orange-top version just looks so much better to me! Hell..the whole set does! (Did???) But y'all all also know my passion for that old orange...I damn near bleed it.

So here's hoping this actually DOES go down in '09...and that I'm actually back on THAT side of the globe to see it happen!!!

I'll believe this when I see it. I too am the proud owner of an orange Bucs jersey, Erict Rhett.

And I the roud owner of an orange Doug Williams, Hardy Nickerson, Mike Alstott, and Warren Sapp.

(My cuz's jersey that I have is the red Bucs joint.)

Of course...all that don't factor in the Bucco Bruce sweatpants, throwback Members Only coat (had to get it), and the numerous Bucco Bruce caps.

Yeah...I'm a creamsicle FIEND!

WHERE did you snag that?!?!?! I've been looking for one for years. The Nickerson one is the next on my list, but it's a lot more available than the Stott jersey. I've only seen the Alstott jersey once and I was too young and too broke to afford it.

I have fond memories of those Bucs jerseys from my childhood, and I am a Bears fan in Chicago. I only saw the orange jerseys a handful of times, and only once against the Bears. However, your comment on the orange socks and pants brought a though to mind. They were probably the first team to do the leotard look. Shame on them. I just found out from the SI in Swampee's post that the Bucs used to have beautiful striped white socks. If they would have paired those with the orange pants, the look would have been perfect. It is a shame we will never see that look.

Here;s the funny thing about that: someone got it for me as a Christmas gift a while back. Imagine that!

I hate the throwback trend. If you like the old look so damn bad, either readopt it or modernize it, but don't wear it for a special occasion. I classify it in the same group as minor league hockey teams wearing Christmas alts.

Buzzkill.

I really like the old orange uniforms. It will be great to see them come back for an appearance. That said, Tampa Bay is one of the very few teams who got it right when they "modernized."

I like this. If nothing else, maybe someone will recognize orange/red/white as a viable color combo, much like the Chargers wearing the powder blue/yellow seemed to revive it (with or without navy) across several leagues over time.

Thought maybe OKC would try orange/red, but we know how that went.
