Tennessee Titans may wear Oilers throwbacks in 2009

Yo...slow up a lil' bit there, kinfolk.

I mean...I'm from the North Florida coast...but I couldn't even imagine how it'd be if the Buccaneers were to ever leave Tampa (or, for that matter, if the Jaguars uprooted from J'ville). It'd never sit right with me. And this is coming from someone who STILL hasn't let go of the old orange uniforms, and probably never will (and bear in mind my original screen name, bucco_B, was a tribute to Bucco Bruce--and the fact that my first and last initial is a "B"). So, in a way, I can sympathize with those who've had their teams, the ones they've grown up with and loved, ripped from them. As a deep and passionate sports fan, that's a super-hard pill to have to try to swallow down. Thankfully, in my case (and yours, BF56, and the rest of Buccaneer Nation), we ain't had to deal with that, but the same can't be said for fans of the Quebec Nordiques, Minnesota North Stars, and Winnipeg Jets, who all saw their teams fly south to re-establish their identities; the LA Rams, the old Cleveland Browns,--heck, even the Baltimore Colts, for the oldheads on the boards (I kid--sorta), who all switched locales (in the case of the Colts, literally a fly-by-night operation), and particularly fans of the Houston Oilers, they arent/weren't so lucky. I myself hate that the Oiler identity is now under lock-and-key. Along with the Bucco Bruce identity, it was among my favorite identities in all of sports.

This ain't to lambast you or nothing like that, kinfolk...but I think just a lil' bit more sensitivity might be needed in regards to those who've lost teams they loved...especially since we ain't yet faced what they've had to deal with. That's all I'm saying.

You respect your elders, young whippersnapper!!!

I was 16 the night the Colts snuck out of town. I still remember exactly where I was when I heard the news.

Is it just me or do people in places like Houston and Cleveland need to get over it? You have teams now, move on. It's not like you're Winnipeg or Quebec.

It's you.

Maybe if they moved the Bucs, changed their name and took the identity and history with them, you'd better understand.

Considering I'm from California, I doubt it. I mean I understand that you lost the team you grew up watching, but its not like you haven't been given another option. The main thing I'm trying to say is that other places have it way worse. And hell, its not like the Oilers were really on the verge of becoming something. The Titans had one really good year still walked away disappointed. Really the success rates of the two teams look to work out to be pretty comparable.

Oh don't get me wrong, I never wanna see the Bucs leave Tampa. I think that'd be a terrible thing to happen to the Tampa area. But in my particular case if hell froze over and they somehow got uprooted to, oh say, Los Angeles, I for one wouldn't be too terribly upset ^_^ (hey, I'd actually get to sit back at home and watch a game more than once a year). But it still doesn't change the fact that Cleveland, Houston, and even Baltimore HAVE a team now. I understand that losing a team you rooted for your entire life is a hard thing to have happen, but to be so bitter about it that you wish death upon the owner who moved the team (and if they moved, there's generally a good reason it happened) and/or refuse to support the team in it's new city or refuse to embrace even a new expansion team (I'm not accusing anyone of doing that, but I've seen it) is a bit over the top IMO.

How is refusing to support the team in its new city "a bit over the top"?

I'd like to see these(inaugural year unis) worn as a TB too. Heck, I'd like them to rock Columbia blue helmets if they redesign. Something different in the NFL might be nice

I am sore, wounded, but not slain

I will lay down and bleed a while

And then rise up to fight again

I see Tennessee wearing Columbia blue vs the Texans along with an original AFL team. Adams would do that just to rub it is Houstonians faces , I'm not saying it's right but I do see and more so if Tennessee finishes with a great year. But I say look at it like this block out everything and for that one game( at Houston) just watch it for the mermories . Thank of it being the Oilers back in action for one day and one day only. Because I don't care what anyone says everyone knows some will be deep down rooting for the "Oilers" of old..... It's like the Bucs when they do wear bucco bruce it will be only fitting for them to get there A$$ kicked.

I don't understand what the arguing is about. The NBA does this sort of thing all the time. Many of the older people I know here in Buffalo who happen to be basketball fans, loved when the Clippers wore Braves uniforms as a throwback.

To get into the spirit, the Titans (dressed as the Oilers) should bring Dan Pastorini along and have him write around on the sidelines clutching his broken ribs.

The version of throwbacks the Titians will wear next year is the 1961 Houston Oilers with the Columbia Blue helmets. Not the mid 70s Oilers uniforms I grew up rooting for.

That makes sense since next season is going to be a 50th season celebration for the AFL, so it is fitting to wear uniforms from the '60s.

i was hoping for the silver look :)

but i can definately live with the old original AFL look.

didn't we wear those jerseys before, as throwbacks? years ago, in the final years in houston? in 1994?

i swear i remember seeing pics of it. awesome font and everything.

i'm definately buying an oilers throwback :) i can't wait.

One of the cleanest looks in the NFL right there. If I find a Chris Johnson Oilers throwback next year, it's all mine. :D

IMO that's one of the worst looks to ever throw back to.

The pants have pretty prominent red stripes, while the helmet and socks have no red, and the jersey has only a tiny red outline around the numbers. The helmets just look bland, since the single-white stripe and white derrick are washed out against the sky-blue background. The whole thing is just a mess. The '90s Oilers had it right, and had a wonderfully-consistent set. That would be a much better look to go with (though I do understand that the significance of the 50th anniversary was a factor in selecting this set). Even the silver-helmet look would be better.

i think part of the reason i love throwbacks is because many of them are so imperfect, or ugly.

it's part of the charm. :)

Anyone else besides me notice two different Oilers sock styles being worn here? What's up with that?!

I wonder if the AFLers are going to go ALL the way back to 1960 ....

BILLS: Silver helmets with plain numbering on the helmets

RAIDERS: Gold trim instead of silver, round numbers, plain black helmets

PATRIOTS: Three-cornered hat with a number under it

CHIEFS: Texas logo with yellow star where Dallas is

BRONCOS: Brown, gold, and vertically-striped socks

Uh, well, perhaps not.
