2009 MLB Season Thread

I don't think Portland really has the desire to build a new stadium. Is there any viable location in Oakland proper for a new stadium? What about closer East Bay/Alameda County suburbs? The Fremont thing was really never gonna work.

One of these days someone will have the courage to put a team in Vegas.

I don't think Las Vegas is going to handle this recession well. Let's wait a while on that one.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I have to agree on that one. Portland or Charlotte seem to be the popular pics for the next MLB team.

I knew it would happen but the A's officially confirmed it:

A's halt plans for ballpark village in Fremont

Not really a shocker there. The A's (and Raiders for that matter) would probably be better off in another city. (Sorry Bucfan)

I also wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers new stadium falls through -- or is it too late for that to happen?

Raley Field was built with something like this in mind. From what I've heard it could be ready within a year. A move to Sacramento might also preserve some of the existing A's fan base with the cities being only about 65 miles apart.

I don't know why the A's can't make it in the East Bay. The SF Bay metropolitan area is big enough to support two baseball teams; Sacramento isn't big enough to support one. That the team doesn't draw better boggles my mind. I know if I grew up out there, I'd easily align myself with the A's and Raiders over the Giants and 49ers.

Don't be so sure about that. The Sacramento metro area has over 2 million people and is a top 20 media market. From 2001 through 2008 the River Cats led all AAA in attendance never drawing under 725,000 people in a season and drawing over 800,000 three times. Based on that I'm pretty sure that should the A's move here that the team would draw.

Absolutely. And best of all is that Raley Field's location is extremely easy to access, and freeways wouldn't have to be expanded much because the stadium falls right on the 80 50 merger. And as well it'd be a straight shot from the Bay Area and an easy drive from Northern Nevada as well. Sacramento is much more of a hub city than most realize. You'd draw all the way from the bay area to the Reno/Tahoe area. And as well as that, half the reason that the A's fail in Oakland IMO is that they have five other pro sports teams to compete with, in Sac you'd have maybe one (IF the Kings stick around).

Good point. Sacramento was the western terminus of the transcontinental railroad as well. Raley Field has great freeway access (right off the Downtown Sac exit from 80/50 east) and a stadium there would benefit Downtown Sacramento as well as I'm sure many would go into Old Sac after a game. Considering that the Kings draw from as far south as Fresno and as far north as Redding you could safely include those cities as well in the range that the A's would draw from if they moved to Sacramento as both are straight shots on 99 and I-5 (particularly on weekends.)

I think the Kings will stay though the most viable places for an arena they won't consider. Instead they want to build at Cal Expo which makes absolutly no sense. However, what would make sense would be for West Sac to step up and suggest that the Kings build a new arena in the area south of Raley Field and north of 50 creating a sportsplex.

The A's don't draw in Oakland in part due to oversaturation in the market combined with a bad stadium. That and it seems no matter what the A's do they will always be second behind the Giants.

The Braves ended up signing Garret Anderson for 1 year and 2.5 Mil.

Story

It's gonna be really strange seeing GA somewhere other than Anaheim. He's still a productive hitter, especially the second half of the season for some reason. I suppose I'll have to get tickets to a Braves game this year and see him. I generally try to see Casey Kotchman every year in Philly as well.

Not bad. He'll make a good platoon with Diaz.

Plus, quite honestly, it's better than gambling on Griffey/Diaz platoon. Sure, ticket sales and merch will probably suffer because we whiffed on Griffey...but who cares if we somehow start winning again this year.
