The provisional rosters for the World Baseball Classic are finally out!

I can't wait for this tournament. I loved it in 06, and I think this time out it will be even better. I would love to see the tournament expanded in the future to allow some smaller baseball nations to try and qualify for it.

I like the tournament and it is good to see some competitive baseball in March. THat said they need to cut down the Tournament by a couple of teams. I'm looking at the Italy roster and are any of them actaully from Italy? I see guys from Pensylvania, New Yprk, Michigan, and Florida. Last time I check none of those places are remotly close to Italy. Cut it down to 12 or 14 teams. I rather see the tournament broken down into 2 groups of 6 or 7 teams and have each country play more games that what they have now where you have teams full of loop hole eligibility rules roster players who get blown out and are out in 3 games.

That said if they are going to go with 16 teams I do like the double elimination format better than the odd tie breaker rules of the last time.

Regarding the eligibility rules. I think the rules should be stricken. What Arod is doing should not be allowed. You shouldn't be allowed to play for two different teams. Also you really should be from the country you play for or at the very least your parents should be from the country. Not your grandparents.

I think that anyone of Italian heirtage is eligible for dual citzenship. Therefore many of those players may not be from Italy, but they are citizens.

I agree that the eligibility rules should be stricter. Once you "pick" a country, you should have to stay with it.

Well Canada loses Harden who will not pitch in order to save himself for the regular season. So now I'm guessing our 3 man rotation will be Aumont, Crain and Scott Richmond. I think we may have just lost our chance at advancing out of group play.

Aren't Alex Rodriguez's parents natives of the Dominican Republic? Rodriguez has dual citizenship (he was born in New York) and since he has dual citizenship, it is not wrong for him to be playing for the Dominican Republic this time around. If Rodriguez was playing for Canada, then yes, that should not be allowed, but there is nothing wrong with him playing for the Dominican Republic.

I can't believe any of you are looking forward to this. Nobody on a 40-man roster should be allowed in this thing. World championships are decided in October. This is just the fake Olympics.

Yes, just the fake Olympics... of course it's with the best baseball players in the world, oh and with baseball as an event at all.

I guess your not a baseball fan. Real baseball fans think this is awesome.

Yea but he played for the US last time. Switching teams isn't right. There is no free agency.

I am not happy with A-Rod's decision to play for a different team this time around. But even with that issue, I am still looking forward to a great WBC. I was a fan of it in 2006 and I can't wait for it to kick off this year. I am excited about the United States team even with A-Rod not on the roster.

that's one of the single dumbest posts i've ever read on these boards.

yes, canada's gonna have a tough time getting past the States or Venezuela without Bedard, Harden and Dempster....but i'll be there decked out in red-and-white either way!

The real baseball fans I know, myself included, are breathing deep sighs of relief every time a highly compensated major leaguer opts out. Harden won't do it. Phewwwwwwwwwww. Danks is out. Thank Godddddddddddddddd. Their obligations are to their teams, and our allegiances as fans are to our teams, whose beloved players represent a multitude of countries. This isn't like the '92 Dream Team, where there was a minimal foreign presence in the NBA and we as a nation got a deep thrill out of watching our guys eviscerate all who stood in their path. Baseball has been sufficiently international without this. I root for Canadians, Dominicans, Venezuelans, Puerto Ricans, and Americans of all sorts for six months, and that's what defines me as a real baseball fan, not some cooked up "Team USA." The timing of this is so inoppurtune from a conditioning and preparation standpoint. Remember how many dead arms there were in 2006? I don't want that again. I can't imagine players, coaches, and managers care for the way it throws a wrench into spring training, either. You know who else doesn't think this is awesome, but might be considered fans of baseball? The general managers of major league teams. They can't stand this.

If you guys want to have international play, do it without players on 40-man rosters. Use college players. Use AA and AAAers: even at those levels, they're still some of the best in the world at what they do, which just puts into perspective how amazing our major leaguers are. Use retired or unsigned players like Clemens, Bonds, and Maddux. I bet Rickey Henderson would go for this. I just don't want to see players' seasons jeopardized because of this fake nonsense.

how in the world is this "fake?" your logic is the entire reason why baseball in the olympics is a joke!

why shouldn't the BEST players in the world be allowed to represent their country? Ichiro called the WBC '06 victory the greatest sporting moment of his career.

Because they're very highly compensated to represent their clubs, and the World Baseball Classic is a liability for a lot of players by virtue of its timing. It's been proven as such. Freddy Garcia has never been the same, in the most egregious example.

Good for Ichiro, but ballplayers don't aspire to win the World Baseball Classic, established 2006, for Team USA or Team Canada or whatever. They aspire to win the World Series. That's the thing. That's what matters. Maybe it's different for Canadians, because you guys take a lot of pride in your exports, but I can't picture anyone in America getting worked up to a championship level because Team USA won the WBC. Riots in the streets, children being conceived, exclamations of "now I can die in peace." Not gonna happen. Never gonna happen.

Although I understand the arguments against an event such as the World Baseball Classic, I have to respectfully disagree that it is a fake tournament that means nothing. It all has to start somewhere, and at one time the World Series itself was looked at as silly and not taken seriously. The truth of the matter is that the Olympics showcase some of the greatest athletes in the World, but not in baseball. Does the World Baseball Classic need some work? Yes it does. But in 2006 it was a great way to showcase players that I had never seen before while cheering for the players on the US team. You had players on the same team that people were excited to see play together. Some people that had never seen Korean and Japanese players play their way got to see some of the best baseball there is to watch. Players were being watched by the whole World, and it was a beautiful thing.

I could go on and on about what is right when it comes to the WBC. It has it's flaws, but so does every other major sporting event in the World. If anything, the 2006 classic has erased all doubt I had about this being a good thing for my favorite sport.
