Chief. Cujo
"Patriot Pete" says that the Chiefs got Vrabel and Cassel for the Chiefs' 2nd rounder.Nice salary dump on the Patriots part.Good for Matt Cassel, he deserved a starting spot somewhere. Shouldnt have to be Brady's backup anymore.Didn't know teams could Franchise a player, then just trade him right away... Well played by New England. rams80
And it is now being reported that the Patriots used that cap space on Fred Taylor. Nice move.B@stards( ) On 8/1/2010 at 4:01 PM, winters in buffalo said: You manage to balance agitation with just enough salient points to keep things interesting. Kind of a low-rent DG_Now. Cassel definitely exceeded my expectations last seasons, but I think part of that was that he was on a very talented team. I think he'll still be good enough to start in the NFL, but I don't think his stats will be nearly as good as they were this past season.

Otherwise it's WTF, has Belichick finally lost his marbles?
FiddySicks
So lemme get this straight. Tampa (the team with the MOST cap room in the league) doesn't pull the trigger on the Cassell deal saying it's too expensive, but Kansas City gives up just their second rounder for a proven linebacker and a QB who had a great year last season. But we'll give up a 2nd AND a 5th for Kellen ing Winslow II? I've said it before and I'll say it again. Mark Dominik can go himself with a rusty fork. Seadragon76
Other deals so far today...-The Lions are officially done with Kitna as he got sent to Dallas for safety Anthony Henry. But, according to Adam Schefter (AKA the Only Reliable source of NFL News), Detroit was in the picture for Matt Cassel along with Tampa Bay and it also involved Denver's Jay Cutler. Wow... That's some good soap opera there.-Also coming to Dallas is former Falcon LB Keith Brooking. Dallas hasn't said anything (yet), but they're getting a pretty good LB.-Houston takes a part of the NFC Champion Cardinals' D Line by signing Antonio Smith to a five year deal.As for the Seahawks... Please, please, PLEASE Sign T.J. Houshmandzadeh. It'll make up for Crabtree getting hurt.

Schefter's version creates the impression that the Broncos didn't initiate the talks, and merely responded to the offers presented. Vic Lombardi's version suggests that the Broncos were and are shopping the eleventh overall pick in the 2006 draft."I've heard the rumors," Cutler told Vic Lombardi. "I know what they're trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I'd love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it."Despite Cutler's generally P.C. comments, Schefter contends that Cutler was angered by the news. There's a consensus in league circles that Cutler has plateaued after showing some improvement early in the 2008 season. He has been criticized in some circles for having a nonchalant demeanor. The reality is that, whenever there's a new coach, there's a chance that he'll want to pick his own quarterback. Regardless of whether the Broncos initiated the trade talks, the fact that the Broncos said anything other than "hell no" suggests that new coach Josh McDaniels wants to go in a different direction. Drew22
Adios Brooking. Thanks for the good years. Now, no one is left from the Super Bowl team.EDIT: Boley is now a Giant. I wish the Falcons would sign someone. The Falcons are going to wait until all the big names fall off the board, more than likely. They'll do that and then basically build a defense from the draft. Honestly, that's what they need to do because the defense we had last year played WAY better than they should've. That D was full of holes. Good luck with Winslow by the way. Then again, Cassell may be another Scott Mitchell. Mitchell looked great backing up Marino in Miami. Then he became the Scott Mitchell we know and love in Detroit. This should be interesting. Looks like KC isn't planning on waiting around to become competitive again.

See Red
I said earlier, I think Cassell's a lateral move from Thigpen. But they didn't give up that much and got a veteran LB back, so I think it was a pretty good deal for Kansas City.He was playing with one of the best O-Line's in football, and throwing the ball to two elite WR's, Randy Moss and Wes Welker. By the way, for you Patriots fans out there... how much turnover was there on the O-Line between 2007 and 2008? Brady got sacked 21 times in 2007 -- Cassell got sacked 47 times last season. gingerbreadmann
Actually, compared to 2007, the play of the offensive line was horribly inconsistent and much worse. Other than the secondary, the line was probably the biggest dropoff from year to year. And guys, I beg you, it's "Cassel." I don't think you're talking about Sam.
