So has Philly said anything about Lito Sheppard and his current status with the team?

Just wondering.

Lito's now a Jet -- Dealt to New York for a 2009 fifth-round pick and a 2010 conditional draft pick.

Adam Schefter says...

Buckhalter, Arrington to Denver; Dawkins not done

Contrary to published reports, free agent safety Brian Dawkins does not currently have a deal with the Broncos. However, he is en route to Denver. The Broncos do have agreements with running backs Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington, according to the players’ agents.

Schefter's the man I trust most when it comes to NFL news.

Haven't seen it in here, but Center/Guard Jason Brown signs a 5 year/$37.5 million ($20 million guaranteed) with the Rams.

Great start to free agency for them.

Word is they're in strong negotiations with S James Butler and are still in on their own CB Ron Bartell.

They cannot afford to let him go. He's one of the few draft picks the Rams have had of late that truly panned out, and while he isn't the best CB in the league, he's still a damn good one. I want the days of the Rams being the NFL's defensive farm team to end, NOW!

Are you hearing anything in Denver about this? Denver Post doesn't have anything and all the Philly sources are saying nothing is done yet....

Hasn't been reported anywhere except the San Fransisco Chronicle.

Seth Joyner was my favorite player of all time, mostly because he was the star when I was a kid. I was sad when he left, but I totally understood the reason (Norman Braman) why.

Dawkins might be my second favorite player of all time, but when I heard this news on the radio, I nearly drove off the road. This is devistating if true. I'm still holding out hope that it's just a premature report, because I can't believe that he would leave. If this is true, I hope that Andy Reid, Jeff Lurie, and Joe Banner all die slow agonyzing deaths. Honestly, Andy is kind of already on his way there.

I haven't seen anything on the ESPN website, or anything local. But my buddy got a text message alert from ESPN, and I heard it mentioned by John Clayton on ESPN Radio. I'm not getting my hopes too high up yet, since Clayton also mentioned a source close to Dawkins said there hasn't been a deal reached yet.

The only thing I've seen for myself has been links on message boards to Sports Illustrated.

I'm really hoping he'll be playing in Denver -- he's one of my favorite players.

By the way, good for Foxworth getting his money. I liked him when he was in Denver -- it was kind of silly to give him up considering the state of the Broncos defense last year.

I really think that signing Dawkins would not be a smart idea for any team other than the Eagles. He no longer plays at a (potential) HOF level, and honestly is barely a starting player anymore from a skill perspective. His main value to the team is as an emotional leader who the other players feed off of, and as a spark plug who gets the crowd into the games by doing his "dancing" thing during the intros, etc. Those things are absolutely invaluable to a team - unfortunately, they really only come from being with one team for a long time - I find it very difficult to believe that he could step into another situation and instantly be that leader or have that bond with the fans. For what it's worth, never in my 31 years in Philadelphia have I seen an athlete that has the type of bond with the fans that he has.

I'm sick to my stomach just knowing that there is a chance that the front office may have run him out of town. I don't believe in god or any kind of religion, but I'm praying to anyone who will listen for everyone to "do the right thing" and for Dawkins to end his career where it started.

On the other hand, I'm really happy for Buckhalter - he's a good dude who's battled through a lot in his career. The Eagles never utilized him in a way that let him shine, so while I'm sad to lose him, I'm happy that he's finally getting this opportunity. He's no star, but he's a solid player that deserves more than what he was getting here.

You got to see him play a lot more than I did, but I thought he looked very good in the five or six times I saw the Eagles play this season. Obviously he's lost a step, but when he hasn't been hampered by injuries, he's looked very good to me. I certainly don't, and I'm sure the Broncos don't, expect to see the elite safety that he was in the defensive backfield -- nor will they be paying him to perform like one (I would think...). But compared to what they had last year, and what their other options are for the next two years, he's a very attractive choice.

Now, what he does bring to the table, aside from his play, is that he's a guy that's hungry for a Super Bowl, and really plays as such. And this is a defense that's going to be replacing 7 or 8 starters, so I think it will be starved for whatever kind of leadership he can provide.

I am excited about the potential of him playing in Denver, as he's been one of my favorite players, but it would still be a shame if Philly let him go, in my opinion.

Awesome. Now when we wear the old orange cream throwbacks, we'll actually play like the teams that wore them.

http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/02/28/dawkins-si...l-with-broncos/

It's a done deal according to Schefter.

Denver signs free agent safety Brian Dawkins to a five-year, $17 million deal that includes $7.2 million guaranteed. The contract also has escalators that could boost the value of the deal to $27 million over five years, but the deal also could be voided to two years, $9 million.

Five years is a lot... but it probably doesn't matter.
