Could change in Lions' uniform (or logo) be coming this year?

by Tom Kowalski

Tuesday February 17, 2009, 2:46 PM

During an interview with Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand today, one of the most interesting things was what he took great pains not to discuss -- the possibility that the team's uniform and/logo could be changed for the 2009 season.

Changes have to be made well in advance for marketing purposes so it's not known if the new regime has had time to come up with a new look. Either way, Lewand wouldn't address it.

"I will only say that we're looking at all parts of the organization to see where we can improve,'' Lewand said. "If and when there's an opportunity to have any announcements on those kinds of things, we'll do so at the appropriate time.''

When asked if the uniforms could be changed in time for this season, Lewand said: "Beyond what I said, I have no comments.''

another beauty from one of the Detroit Lions message boards:

Looks like a hybrid of a hamster and a frilled lizard.

Looks like a hornless triceratops

I don't know what it looks like. What I do know is that it does NOT look like a Lion. And the poor thing looks like he just saw a ghost!

Rumor has it, Newman tasted like chicken...more specifically, Kenny Roger's Roasters. :D

I think they should do a complete overhaul. The new unis should not look like the lions of old if they want to get a REAL fresh start. I like the mockup someone posted with the blue helmets. I also like the idea of maybe a graphite colored helmet - charcoal grey maybe.

Anything to get that 0-16 stink off of them will work. I suggest champagned as a color (see: Michigan Panthers)

here is another description from someone who has seen the proposed logo

It accomplished what needed to be done without a drastic departure from our long-time Lion. No more Rorschach test. Same colors; blue, white and black. Same basic profile, just added white lines for definition.

It's really a "less is more" approach to updating our Lion. Just add a few highlights to clear up the image. An "evolution" as Lewand had suggested.
