Oh god please don't screw up this uni change. Retro is good... radical is bad.. very bad..

Why not? Sometimes it is fun to watch things like this blow up in people's faces(see: OKC Thunder). Im hoping they do it right because I have nothing against the franchise, but on the other hand I have never really liked Alex Smith so I hope they go with Red and White jerseys, each with plenty of Black on the side panel and Gold piping going from the side to the shoulder, then to the collar, then back over the shoulder and down around the back numbers. I hope they make use of a super modern number font while still trying to use the old logo on their helmets, which by now hopefully have more Black on them. Then I hope they have Gold pants, White pants, Red pants, and Black pants. Lastly I hope they make the names on the back of their uniforms match the jersey color with only a small outline to separate them. Yeah, that sounds good. :D

One thought occured to me the other day: will the 49ers be able to have the 3 stripes on the arms? Didn't Adidas trademark 3 stripes on clothing, or were they not allowed in the end?

They should avoid three stripes on the sleeve more because sleeve stripes just look stupid these days, not because of any potential beef with adidas.

Of course, adidas owns Reebok, so I doubt there would be any issue.

according to the sacramento bee, the niners will unveil their uniforms close to the draft, but will not be able to wear them until 2010 because they didn't meet the deadline to make changes to their uniforms

Then why unveil now if that's the case?

Then it's ridiculous for them to unveil them. Why would people spend money on the current jerseys when they'd be obsolete in a year? They'd just be costing themselves money. I highly doubt the accuracy of that article.

That's incredibly stupid. I'd put money on it that they either push back the unveiling for a season or they get some exemption from the NFL.

The Bee has corrected that statement, the uniforms will be worn in 2009:

Heard any updates about the new uniforms? Me neither. Just to reiterate, the team is set to unveil the new duds at its draft party on April 25 and to wear them on the field this season. ... This post replaces an earlier one in which I wrote that the uniforms wouldn't take the field until 2010. Apparently, there had been some question about the date, which has now been cleared up. Look for new duds this season ...

Wow. Talk about avoiding responsibility for his error.

Apparently, there was a release or statement recently that said 2010 instead of 2009 and he went with that. It was a typo and the team sent out a new release, so he corrected his statement. He wasn't responsible for the error, so he's not avoiding responsibility.

So why not just say that? Why use weasel-y language like "there had been some question about the date"?

Because he'd likely burn a few bridges if he called out the team's communications department on it. As a fellow reporter, this is a less than ideal situation. Besides, it makes a reporter look petty.

they will just move the numbers on the shoulders like cleveland did I still don't know how chicago could fit the stripes and numbers on the sleeves

Okay, I guess I can see that. Still seems a little weasel-y, especially from a blog.

They don't - the stripes are often cut off on Bears jerseys (as is the George Halas tribute, which would seem a little offensive) to accomodate player preferences.

Moving the numbers up is no solution (and the niners numbers are already on the shoulder). I hate the way the Browns / Steelers / Giants / Lions sleeve stripes look. Actually I should say "sleeve" stripe. That sad little strip of fabric that travels over the lower edge of the shoulder pads can only be called a sleeve by the biggest stretch of the imagination. I understand why these teams want to hold on to a traditional look, but unfortunately IMO they're failing miserably. Compair the Browns jersey today with the one worn in the 60's. Not even close. And it isn't just the silly little stripe that can barely stretch to 4 or 5 inches horizontally that destroys the look. When you move the number off the sleeve to up on the shoulder you change a traditional look to a modern look. I'm glad the Bears are holding out.

No changes. When the Jags and Lions has changed. Odd....

The Niners are changing uniforms. They didn't say anything about changing the logos.

But, is it me, or does the red seem closer to the throwback red than the current darker garnett red?

I was thinking they were changing logos too, going back to the old logo. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I agree that the red does look lighter.

Meanwhile, the gold on the tractor and the gold on the trailer look like two completely different hues...
